66.4 -
Philander to U Yadav, FOUR, that's a slog from Umesh, but he got enough bat and cleared mid-wicket with ease, on a good length and in that channel outside off, Yadav spotted it early and mows it across the line, cleas the infield and brings up India's 200
64.4 -
Philander to Ravindra Jadeja, FOUR, lovely shot, Philander misses his length and swings this one onto Jadeja's pads, he picks up the length early and flicks it superbly over mid-wicket, races away to the fence in a hurry
51.1 -
Rabada to Ravindra Jadeja, FOUR, easy ball and put away. In fact Jadeja didn't try to hit it too hard, just guided that ball in the gap at cover-point and the timing was good enough. Short and outside off stump, Jadeja places it to perfection and gets four more
49.0 -
Harmer to Mishra, FOUR, flighted delivery on the leg stump, Mishra plays a cheeky little paddle-scoop to the fine leg boundary. Handy runs these for India
48.1 -
Harmer to Ravindra Jadeja, FOUR, good effort from Rabada but not good enough to prevent the boundary. Flatter and shorter just outside off stump, Jadeja goes back and cuts well, beats the man at point, Rabada gives chase, dives, flicks the ball back, it was not powerful enough and it rolled back to touch the rope
46.2 -
Harmer to Vijay, FOUR, if the ball is spinning, then you've got to use the feet to negate some turn. That's exactly what Vijay has done now. Flighted delivery outside off stump, Vijay advances and lofts the drive inside-out over cover for a handsome boundary
45.2 -
Tahir to Vijay, FOUR, edged but safe. Flatter in trajectory, Vijay looks to defend with an angled bat, the ball takes the edge and beats Amla's dive to his right at slip
42.5 -
Harmer to Ravindra Jadeja, FOUR, this time he cuts, the length was slightly shorter than the third ball and there was more width as well, Jadeja rocks back and places it in the gap to the left of the man at backward point
40.5 -
Harmer to Vijay, FOUR, this is good aggressive cricket from Vijay, comes down the track, gets to the pitch of the ball, made room as he did so, takes the ball on the full and goes inside out over extra cover, a couple of bounces and over the ropes
39.5 -
Elgar to Vijay, FOUR, lovely shot, low full toss from Elgar, on Vijay's pads, he gets forward and whips it wide of mid-wicket, the man at deep square leg can't gets across and it's another boundary
39.3 -
Elgar to Vijay, FOUR, fifty for Vijay, that's a nice way to get going as well. This was pushed through flatter and wider outside off, Vijay waits on it, uses the pace on the ball and cuts it very late, beats slip and races away to the fence, 12th Test fifty for Vijay
34.3 -
Harmer to Rahane, FOUR, poor ball from Harmer, drops one short and well outside off, Rahane makes room and cracks it in front of square on the off-side, beats cover and races away to the fence
28.1 -
Steyn to Vijay, FOUR, that's a nice way to get going, overpitched and well outside off, Vijay leans into the shot, drives it on the up and hits it in the gap past cover, no need to run for those
28.0 -
Philander to Rahane, FOUR, lovely shot, but that's a shocker from Tahir at mid-on. This was pitched up and held its line on middle, Rahane goes forward, presents the full face of the bat and punches it to the left of mid-on. Tahir gets across, puts in the slide and allows the ball to go past him. Philander looks frustrated as the ball races away to the fence
26.5 -
Rabada to Vijay, FOUR, fabulous shot. Perhaps the shot of the day so far. Nothing wrong with that delivery, good length outside off, Vijay leant into the cover drive, on the rise and timed it superbly to get four through the vacant cover region. Didn't try to hit it too hard, relied on timing and the outfield did the rest
25.2 -
Harmer to Vijay, FOUR, swept past the diving Elgar at backward square leg for four. It was tossed up outside off, Vijay controlled the shot and got it along the ground. Elgar went and dived but the ball's pace was too quick for him
23.0 -
Rabada to Rahane, byes, FOUR, can't do much when the ball bounces in front of you like that. Left alone outside off, the ball dies on Vilas and runs away off his legs, he tried to get the body behind that but concedes four byes
19.1 -
Rabada to Pujara, FOUR, can't bowl there on the pads. Angling down on middle and leg, Pujara with a neat roll of the wrists clips that wide of the square leg umpire. Raced away to the fence
17.0 -
Harmer to Pujara, FOUR, third shortish ball in a row and this time there was width for Pujara. Short outside off, Pujara rocked back in a flash and cut that through cover, had to beat the fielder and did so with ease
13.3 -
Rabada to Pujara, FOUR, in total control there, was Pujara. On a short of length outside off, Pujara stayed besides the line of the ball and then steers it wide of backward point. Bisected both gully and backward point. Raced away
12.4 -
Harmer to Vijay, FOUR, deliberately done and a boundary to Vijay. Down the wicket and then a chip over mid-wicket, Faf has a long way to cover from mid-on, runs across to prevent it and then dives, but can't prevent the four
11.2 -
Philander to Vijay, FOUR, bowled with a different action by Philander, but on the pads, Vijay is good there, clips it off the pads and wide of mid-wicket. The ball raced away. Always in control of the stroke was Vijay there
8.3 -
Steyn to Vijay, FOUR, nothing streaky about that. It wasn't a bad delivery at all, on a good length and outside off, Vijay timed the drive on the rise from the crease. Didn't get forward, didn't need to for the timing was good enough to carry the ball into the fence
5.3 -
Philander to Pujara, FOUR, Pujara has nutmegged Rabada at square leg! First short ball attempted by Philander in the match, short outside off, Pujara rolled his wrists on the pull, it was a regulation stop for Rabada, but after moving to his left, he lets it go awkwardly through his legs. Should've been stopped, a bonus boundary for Pujara
4.4 -
Steyn to Pujara, FOUR, beautiful shot. That's where Pujara is so strong. Overpitched on middle stump, Pujara gets forward and times the flick through mid-wicket. No need to run for those as the outfield is very quick. Steyn erred slightly there and Pujara was good enough to pick him away
3.0 -
Steyn to Vijay, FOUR, now a flashy stroke from Vijay but he gets away. Threw his bat at a wide length delivery outside off, lucky that the edge went to the right of the diving gully. Not sure whether the fielder got a hand on that. Need a replay to confirm, but definitely it went at a catchable height. The fielder was going with one hand and yes replays show that gully palmed it over. The ball was too quick for the fielder. Either those stick or they don't. Steyn has a wry smile as the ball runs away to the fence
2.0 -
Philander to Pujara, FOUR, first runs of the series and it is a boundary. Overpitched outside off by Philander, Pujara didn't drive it off the middle of the bat, the bat face closed and it skewed away through mid-off, but good enough to beat the chasing Rabada. The outfield is quick and that helped Pujara
68.0 -
Tahir to Aaron, out Bowled!! India have been bundled out for 201! Another wrong 'un and Aaron didn't have an idea. This was tossed up just outside off and spun back in, Aaron was lunging forward in defence, leaves a big gap between bat and pad, the ball sneaks through and hits the off and middle stump. Having won the toss, India have been dismissed for a below par score. Aaron b Tahir 0(3)
67.3 -
Tahir to U Yadav, out Bowled!! Tahir has struck! This was the wrong 'un, pitched outside off and spun back in sharply. Umesh lunged forward in defence, leaves a huge gap between bat and pad, the ball sneaks through and rattles the off and middle stump. Ashwin looks forlorn as India lose their ninth wicket. U Yadav b Tahir 5(7) [4s-1]
66.2 -
Philander to Ravindra Jadeja, out Lbw!! Philander has his man! Jadeja was struggling to pick up Philander's reverse swing, was getting hit on the pads far too often. This one was pitched around leg and nipped back in, Jadeja was once again caught in his crease, ends up playing right across the line, misses and is struck bang in front of the stumps. That was going on and hitting the leg stump. Simple call for umpire Kettleborough, a handy partnership has been broken. Ravindra Jadeja lbw b Philander 38(92) [4s-4]
50.5 -
Elgar to Mishra, out Caught by Steyn!! For the third time today, Elgar has taken a wicket in his comeback over. Wicket number four for Elgar. Sent ahead of Ashwin, Mishra tries to attack the left-arm spinner, comes down the track and looks to muscle it over the long-on boundary, but gets too close to the pitch of the ball and toe-ends it. Mid-on, who was stationed slightly deep than normal, moves back to take a simple catch. That fielder there was placed to tempt Mishy to go for the big shot and he fell in the trap. Mishra c Steyn b Elgar 6(8) [4s-1]
46.4 -
Harmer to Vijay, out Lbw!! Did that pitch in line? Umpire Richard Kettleborough thought about it and then raised his finger. The replay confirms that it was a good call from the umpire. Flighted delivery on the stumps, Vijay gets down on one knee and looks to sweep, but misses and gets hit in line with middle stump. Impact or height wasn't an issue. The question was where the ball pitched and it landed right in line with the leg stump. India have lost their best batsman on show today. End of a fine knock from the opener. Vijay lbw b Harmer 75(136) [4s-12]
39.1 -
Elgar to W Saha, out Caught by Amla!! Elgar is on a hat-trick! First ball dismissal for Saha. This was tossed up and spun away slightly, Saha was pushing forward, went with hard hands, the outside edge is found and it's a simple catch to Amla at first slip, he bends forward and accepts the offering. Third wicket for Elgar, India have lost half their side now. W Saha c Amla b Elgar 0(1)
38.0 -
Elgar to Rahane, out Caught by Amla!! Elgar has two now! He once again strikes in his first over. This was tossed up nicely outside off, drew Rahane into the drive, turned across the right-hander. Rahane was committed into the shot, the ball finds the outside edge and it's safely lapped up by Amla at first slip. Rahane looked promising but he's gone now, Elgar is having a ball in the middle. India have now lost their last recognised batting pair as well. Rahane c Amla b Elgar 15(48) [4s-2]
22.2 -
Rabada to Kohli, out Caught by Elgar!! Now Kohli goes. He has his head down in disappointment. Takes a few seconds to leave the field. Maiden Test wicket for Rabada and not a bad one at that. Pitched up outside off, Kohli was early into the flick, the leading edge went low and forward to cover where Elgar took a low catch. Did well to come in and then get the fingers under the ball. Definitely carried. No problems with that. Loose from Kohli and he fails on his birthday. Did the ball stop a tad on Kohli as he attempted the stroke? May have done a bit. Kohli c Elgar b Rabada 1(4)
21.4 -
Elgar to Pujara, out Lbw!! The golden arm strikes. That is plumb if there was no inside edge onto the pad. Pujara's reaction on being given out is one of shock and amazement. Need to see a replay to check whether Pujara got some bat on that. Dharmasena gave it out pretty quickly. On seeing the replay, there doesn't seem to be any inside edge. Pujara missed the line of the ball, it was heading towards middle, Pujara played outside the line and the ball crashed into the pad in front of middle. Pujara was struck well below the kneeroll as well. No issues with height either. The move to bring on Elgar ahead of Tahir has worked wonders. Elgar celebrated that wicket by thumping his chest and then roared. Probably Pujara's reaction was more of disappointment at missing the ball rather than anything else. Pujara lbw b Elgar 31(66) [4s-6]
1.4 -
Philander to Dhawan, out Caught by Amla!! Philander strikes. Very poor shot from Dhawan though. It is just the fourth ball he is facing and he has slashed one straight to slip. The width was there outside off, short and wide, but early on in a Test, an opener should be cautious and careful, Dhawan isn't in that mood. Sees the run-scoring opportunity on offer and goes after that, a thick edge and caught at first slip. Amla hangs on. And that is a dream start for South Africa. Philander after being disappointed last delivery, now punches the air and roars in delight. Dhawan c Amla b Philander 0(4)
