Inzamam-ul-Haq, former Pakistan captain and coach of the Afghanistan Cricket Team has decided to resign from the position of coach as he is set to don a new role in Pakistan Cricket as the chief selector for the Pakistan cricket team.

The Pakistan Cricket Board reportedly approached Inzamam to revive the dying fortunes of the Pakistan cricket team whose performance was below par at both the Asia Cup and the recently concluded World T20.

Inzamam, who was the coach of the Afghanistan cricket team in the recently concluded World T20, did a decent job with the team as the side won the hearts of cricket fans all over the world with their gutsy performance. They were also the only team to beat the would-be champions West Indies in the group stages of the tournament.

Afghanistan Cricket Board chief Shafiq Stanikzai said that the ACB had received Inzamam’s resignation through e-mail. He also said-

Today Shahryar Khan called me and asked a favour to release Inzamam-ul-Haq as they are keen to hire him.

"

Although, the former Pakistan great is contracted with Afghanistan until December this year,  Stanikzai said that ACB was ready to release him as they did not want to drag the matter and would rather finish things on a good and high note. He added that as patriotic people, they understood Inzamam’s need to put his country first.

Inzamam had joined the Afghanistan team as head coach for the team’s tour of Zimbabwe in late 2015. Once Afghanistan won both the ODI and T20I series in Zimbabwe, his contract was extended till December, 2016.

Before he was appointed as Afghanistan’s coach, Inzamam’s last international assignment was a short-term stint as Pakistan’s batting consultant in 2012-13.
