There were debates after it was revealed and some wry comments lamented the fact that the likes of John Dyson and Brendon Julian missed out.

In response, Peter Roebuck, on behalf of Wisden Australia, formed an England team of the 20th century which would be good enough to compete against the Aussies.
His team too was controversial. There was no place for Jack Hobbs and Ian Botham. 

Moreover, Roebuck chose Douglas Jardine as 'manager, coach, chairman of selectors and scapegoat in the event of loss!'
