The benefits of the Benefit

|
The Benefit system was an important part of the professional cricketer's life but, at times, it can be very cruel as well.
Yorkshire usually did things in their own way and there was no exception in this as well. The county invested Harry Halliday's testimonial funds in Australian shares and he could do nothing but watch their value decline to nothing.
At Sussex, Rupert Webb was told that he would have to share his benefit year with a team-mate. This wasn't all. The following statement was added: "You'll only get 30 or 40%. You're more intelligent. You'll have a higher earning potential when you retire."
