In 1974-75 Ashes series Thomson caught the English batsmen by surprise. They had no answer to his raw pace.
Jim Laker was covering the tour as a journalist. In Sydney, he sat in the Noble Stand and watched Thommo's first three overs. He told other journalists that he had never seen anyone bowl that fast. He was white-faced with shock.
And he didn't have to bat against him!
