Sri Lanka's Kithuruwan Vithanage suspended for one year

Sri Lankan batsman Kithuruwan Vithanage has been suspended from all forms of cricket by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) after he was found guilty of misconduct and in breach of the ICC Code of Conduct.

Reports suggest that Vithanage was involved in a late-night brawl last month along with Ramith Rambukwella, after a group of unidentified men attacked the duo. Vithanage had sustained injuries and was admitted to a local hospital in Colombo.

Further details of the incident were not disclosed by the SLC.

SLC issued a press release, stating, “The Disciplinary Committee was presented with written and oral evidence from witnesses to the incident in question and Vithanage was invited to present similar evidence in his defense. ”

The press release further stated,

In consideration of the evaluation of the evidence presented, the Disciplinary Committee has recommended an immediate suspension, specifically drawing attention to the fact that the conduct of Vithanage is 'unacceptable when considering his status as a public figure, and a role model for the youth of Sri Lanka'.

Vithanage, who is a middle order batsman, has played 10 Tests, 6 ODIs and 3 T20s for Sri Lanka. He has been allowed to appeal against the decision.
