AB de Villiers to undergo elbow surgery

South Africa captain AB de Villiers has been ruled out of the Australia tour due to an elbow injury.

AB was earlier ruled out of the Tests against New Zealand as well due to a persistent elbow injury but will now undergo elbow surgery.

The recovery period is 8-10 weeks, which means he will also miss the away Test series against Australia.

Mohammad Moosajee, SA team manager said,

AB has failed to come through his fitness test this morning. Although the physio strapped his elbow while he was batting and he did have some relief with some shots, the elbow pain has not gone away completely.

He further added, “The recovery is anything between eight to ten weeks and we are hopeful he will recover for the Sri Lanka series in December.”

De Villiers will miss the five home ODIs against Australia and the three Tests in Australia in November.

Faf du Plessis will lead the team in his absence.

ODI squad for Australia series:

Faf du Plessis (capt), Kyle Abbott, Hashim Amla, Farhaan Behardien, Quinton de Kock, JP Duminy, Imran Tahir, David Miller, Wayne Parnell, Aaron Phangiso, Andile Phehlukwayo, Kagiso Rabada, Rilee Rossouw, Tabraiz Shamsi, Dale Steyn
