Shakib named Bangladesh Test captain again

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) have announced that veteran all-rounder Shakib al Hasan will be replacing Mushfiqur Rahim as the captain of the Bangladesh Test side. This will be Shakib's second stint as Test captain after 9 Tests from 2009 to 2011.

Reportedly, the change will help Mushfiqur, who was captain, wicketkeeper and middle-order batter, focus on improving his batting. It was Mushfiqur who had replaced Shakib as Test captain in 2011: Shakib had won his first game as captain against the West Indies, but lost the following 8 matches to India, New Zealand, England and Zimbabwe.

Shakib has consistently been one of the top all-rounders in the world across formats - he is currently top ranked all-rounder in Tests and T20Is, and number 2 in ODIs. He is also captain of the T20I team, reflecting his versatility.

The BCB are yet to announce a new head coach, so Shakib and his side will have to train largely by themselves as they host Sri Lanka for 2 Tests and 2 T20Is in January 2018, as well as an ODI tri-series featuring the Lankans and Zimbabwe.
