Australia announce Test squad for tour of India

Australia have announced their 16-man Test squad for their upcoming tour of India.

Uncapped legspinner Mitchell Swepson has earned his maiden call-up to the squad.

Interim Chairman of Selectors Trevor Hohns said,

Mitchell Swepson has come through the pathway system. He is an exciting young leg-spinner, gives the ball a very good rip, he's a wicket-taking leg-spinner. Given the opportunity we feel he could play a part over there and if he doesn't he'll gain a lot from the experience from being there.

In an attempt to end their woes against Asian sides in Asia, 5 spinners have been named in the squad which include Nathan Lyon, Steve O'Keefe and Ashton Agar.

Glenn Maxwell completes the spinner’s circle as he has been recalled to the Test side.

Mitchell Marsh has also been recalled to the squad after being axed for his poor performance.

Shaun Marsh makes a return after injuring his finger during the series against South Africa in November.

The biggest surprise is the ignoring of Adam Zampa, who has been one of Australia’s leading spinners in recent times.

On this, Trevor Hohns said,

We thought a leg-spinner would be handy to have over there. We thought we would go for a more attacking leg-spinner more so than a defensive spinner. That's no disrespect to Adam. Adam is going well as well.

Australia last won a Test series in India in 2004 and have been struggling in Asia in the recent times.

Australia squad:

Steven Smith (c), David Warner, Matt Renshaw, Usman Khawaja, Shaun Marsh, Peter Handscomb, Glenn Maxwell, Matthew Wade (wk), Mitchell Marsh, Ashton Agar, Steve O'Keefe, Mitchell Starc, Mitchell Swepson, Josh Hazlewood, Jackson Bird, Nathan Lyon
