Stuart Broad added to England squad for South Africa series

Stuart Broad has been added to England's one-day squad against South Africa as a replacement for the injured Liam Plunkett.

Broad rose to No 1 in the Test bowling rankings after his match-winning performance in Johannesburg last week but has not featured in a limited-overs squad since last year's World Cup.

Plunkett himself was a replacement for Steven Finn (side strain) but will remain with England Lions as he recovers from a thigh problem.

Broad, who has been eager to return to England's limited-overs side since the summer, will feature in the five-match one-day series but has not been included for the two Twenty20s against the Proteas.

Plunkett is expected to be fit for those, meaning Broad's hopes of a place at the World T20 in March remain a long shot.

Speaking after his stunning six for 17 sealed the Test series for England at the Wanderers, Broad said:

'I'm desperate to play white-ball cricket again for England.

You have a short career and I'm not going to play until I'm 37 or 38, so I want to play as much cricket as I possibly can.

'My consistency has got better with the red ball probably through playing more exclusively red-ball cricket, but we don't know what is going to happen over the next few months with injuries or loss of form.

'Anything can happen to get a call-up so I want to be ready to play white-ball cricket.'

The England and Wales Cricket Board announced his return in a statement which read: 'Stuart Broad will replace Liam Plunkett in the five match ODI series against South Africa starting early next month.

'Plunkett, who had been called into the squad earlier this week, has a thigh strain and will now remain with England Lions in UAE for the remainder of their series against Pakistan A.

'Plunkett remains in the England T20 squad for the two match series against South Africa provided he recovers from his current injury.'
