Nuwan Kulasekara Retires from Test Cricket

Nuwan Kulasekara, the 33-year old Sri Lankan seamer, announced his retirement from Test cricket on Wednesday (June 1).

Kulasekara's last Test appearance was against England at Lord’s in 2014. He will continue to be available to play limited-overs cricket for Sri Lanka.

In a letter to Sri Lanka Cricket, Kulasekara said-

After much thought, I believe it is the right time to retire and I hope it will allow me to better prepare for ODI and T20 cricket, which I would like to continue playing for Sri Lanka subject to good performance and selection.

Kulasekara had already played six ODIs when he made his Test debut against New Zealand in Napier in April 2005. He took just one wicket across two innings, and could never really establish himself in the longer format of the game.

In 2009, he took 20 wickets in five matches and recorded his career-best figures of 4 for 21 against Pakistan in the first innings of the Colombo Test. He finished with a match haul of 8 for 58 as Sri Lanka won by seven wickets and took a 2-0 lead in the three-match series. That performance is widely regarded as Kulasekara's best Test performance.

Kulasekara could never replicate his heroics of that match. He did pick up 15 wickets in six matches in 2012, but then played only three games in the next two years. In the limited overs, he has a much favourable record. He was the No.1 ODI bowler in March 2009. He has taken 186 wickets in 173 ODIs and 56 scalps in 50 T20Is.
