We kept them tied up in the last 10 overs as well. The bowlers bowled disciplined line and lengths throughout. The batsmen too did really well to chase it down. We wanted a good start to the series. The bowlers did a great job to restrict them to less than 260 and then we played aggressively to chase it down. Mathews: 'I thought our score was below par. It was a little spongy earlier on (taking about the bounce), the ball was turning and sticking. We just didn't get enough runs on the board. We also didn't pick wickets at crucial junctures and couldn't put pressure on them. We were a little bit scrappy, but we have four more games, we will look to do well in them. Malik also completed his fifty and alongside Mohammad Rizwan, batted well to ensure that Pakistan went 1-0 up in the 5-match ODI series. The Sri Lankan bowlers were not penetrative enough and even their spearhead, Lasith Malinga, went for runs.
Hafeez though was positive at one end and after passing his fifty, upped the ante and played some excellent counter-attacking cricket. In the process, Hafeez became the second Pakistani player after Shoaib Malik to score a hundred and take four wickets or more in an ODI. This was Hafeez's first ODI hundred in 22 innings. Thisara Perera dismissed him soon after the milestone, but the Professor's knock had already put Pakistan in the driver's seat.
Chasing 256, openers Azhar Ali and Ahmed Shehzad got Pakistan off to a good start, before Angelo Mathews removed his counterpart in his second over. Soon Shehzad walked back to the hut as he chased a widish ball from Suranga Lakmal. Mohammad Hafeez and Babar Azam then steadied the innings with a fifty partnership but Tillakaratne Dilshan trapped the latter plumb in front to dent the visitors.
