However, the young fast bowler, Rabada, in his second over ripped through the opposition ranks by snaring the wickets of Tamim Iqbal, Litton Das and Mahmuddlah off consecutive deliveries.
Kagiso Rabada (8-3-16-6) leads the Proteas off the field. What a performance it has been from the youngster. He first became only the second bowler in ODI history to take a hat-trick on debut. In addition to that, he ended with 6/16, giving him the best bowling figures on debut. He overtook Fidel Edwards, who took 6/22 against Zimbabwe in 2003.

Rabada: 'It's great to do well for your team, to put your team in a comfortable position. I didn't know what to bowl and it was bit of a fluke, but I will take it (on being asked about the hat-trick ball). It's important to keep it simple, you want the batsman to guess, but more importantly, you want to bowl it on a good line and length. South Africa are one of the best teams in the world and we have so many great players, it will be stupid if you don't want to be here. There's so much to learn and I am already enjoying my time here.'
Kagiso Rabada is the Man of the Match for taking 6/16. His spell included a hat-trick as well.
Amla: 'I think the way we started with the ball was great. Kagiso Rabada was especially very good. We've got wonderful players, we have got some really good guys. Obviously, we don't have AB (de Villiers) here, but the guys did really well today. I would have batted first as there was a little bit of shape. We expected a little more shape though from that wicket, but it didn't happen. The spinners bowled well too. Doesn't matter who you play or where you play, you always want to score runs.'
Mortaza: 'We should have scored 200-220 at least, the game could have been different then, but their bowlers bowled well. If someone gets a hat-trick against you, you will always be on the back foot. The pitch wasn't that difficult, but hopefully we can do well in the next game. The fault was not of the wicket, it was a good wicket to bat on but we just didn't bat well enough.'
Earlier in the day, due to persistent rain, the game was reduced to 40 overs per side. It was Rabada, who shone brightly with a 6-wicket haul to put the visitors in pole position. He even picked up a hat-trick on his ODI debut. He became only the second bowler in the history of ODIs to achieve that milestone. Rabada's bowling figures is also the best by any cricketer in ODIs on debut. Rahim, Nasir Hossain and Shakib Al Hasan tried to help the hosts to recover, but the damage had already been done by Rabada with the new ball. Chris Morris gave Rabada good support with two wickets. Bangladesh have a lot to ponder, especially with the way some of their batsmen got out. The second ODI will be played again in Dhaka and Bangladesh need to show self-belief and resilience to make a come back and level the series 1-1.
South Africa put up a thoroughly professional show to register a convincing win against the hosts. Faf du Plessis played with steady perfection to anchor the innings and he was given good support by Quinton de Kock and Rilee Rossouw. For Bangladesh, Nasir Hossain and Mashrafe Mortaza picked up a wicket apiece, but it was a below par show from the bowlers.
