ICC announces first independent woman director

As part of the planned changes to the governance structure of the International Cricket Council (ICC), the first independent woman director has been appointed to the board of the ICC: Indra Nooyi, CEO and Chairwoman of PepsiCo, the second largest food and beverage business in the world. Nooyi will effectively become a functioning member of the board by June 2018.

Nooyi was born and educated in Chennai where she played cricket as a teenager, before moving to the USA and eventually being appointed head of PepsiCo in 2006. With the ICC focusing on expanding the scale and coverage of women's cricket, and a notable gender disparity in the senior positions of cricket administrations around the world, Nooyi's appointment is a welcome step in the right direction. Whether it leads to an improvement in women's cricket remains to be seen.
