Australian captain Steve Smith has been ruled out of the Chappell-Hadlee ODI series due to an injured ankle.
Smith sprained his ankle during the 5th ODI against Pakistan.
Smith said,
“
It was decided that I've been ruled out of the New Zealand series. I've got a medial ligament injury to my left ankle, they think it's a 7-10-day injury and I wouldn't be fit for the first game, I'd be very unlikely for the second game and a possible for the third game. We've got a lot coming up so they think it's an opportunity to rest it and be right for India.
”
Australia are in a fix on who the fill-in captain will be as vice-captain David Warner has been rested for the ODI series.
Australia recently announced their squad for the Chapell-Hadlee series, in which they have recalled 2 veteran batsmen.
Reports suggest that wicketkeeper Matthew Wade will be the fill-in captain but it is yet to be confirmed by Cricket Australia.
Australia dominated over Pakistan in the recently concluded tour, beating Australia 4-1 in the ODI series.
The 1st ODI against New Zealand is scheduled on January 30th, 2017.
