Supreme Court removes Anurag Thakur as BCCI president

The Supreme Court on Monday ordered BCCI President Anurag Thakur and Secretary Ajay Shirke to forthwith vacate their offices.

A bench comprising Chief Justice T.S. Thakur, Justice A.M. Khanwilkar and Justice D.Y. Chandrachud said that as an interim arrangement, the senior-most Vice President of the BCCI will act as the President and the Joint Secretary will act as the Secretary.

Defiant heads of state associations who did not agree to implement the Lodha reforms would also be removed.

The Supreme Court also said BCCI office bearers over 70 years or whose office period has extended for over nine years or those who have a criminal conviction should be removed.

For the time being, Amitabh Chaudhary of Jharkhand Cricket Association, currently BCCI Joint Secretary, will perform Shirke's role.

The next hearing will take place on January 19 when names of the interim board will be decided.

The three-match ODI series between India and England will begin from January 15.
