Mahela Jayawardene appointed as Mumbai Indians' Coach

Former Sri Lankan player Mahela Jayawardene has been appointed as the head coach of the IPL franchise Mumbai Indians.

Jayawardene replaces Ricky Ponting, who was the head coach of Mumbai Indians for 2 years. 

Ricky Ponting’s contract will come to an end and hence Jayawardene has been named as replacement.

The franchise announced in a media release,

 

 

Mahela Jayawardene's appointment has come in the wake of Ricky Ponting - coach for the previous two years - contract coming to a close.

 

 

Jayawardene has previously played in the IPL for Kings XI Punjab, Kochi Tuskers and Delhi Daredevils.

On the new responsibility, Mahela said,

 

 

I am very excited by the appointment and glad that the Mumbai Indians management appreciated my presentation and ideas. In what is a new chapter in my career, I will be striving hard to bring them [Mumbai] more on-field success and joy.

 

 

The IPL auction is scheduled to be held in February 2017 with the new season of IPL starting in April 2017.
