On their way up

In many ways, India's win against England in the Chennai is a bigger indicator that they are on their way to being number 1 than their beating Australia, chiefly because here they covered some new ground, and overcame some old nemesis'.

When India beat Australia they did something they had done before, it was the next step that was always missing. India have had spectacular wins in the David-Goliath fashion, but they have failed to carry on from there. A big win is regularly, if not always, followed by a casual defeat, a friterring away of opportunity, which is obviously what number 1 teams are not made of .

But now they finally look to be changing that. They don't seem 'tired' of winning too soon. And what's more, they won from a decidedly tight spot in a manner that was 'clinical' and 'professional' with grit rather than flair. How often have they done that before, especially on the back of a series win?

Of course, they are still some way away from the top. You can't be called number 1 unless you have dominated the game for at least a year or so,
