Laura Delany, the allrounder, has been named captain of Ireland Women’s team. She replaced Isobel Joyce, who stepped down last month, after the side’s group-stage exit from the ICC Women’s World Twenty20 2016 in India. Ireland Women lost all 4 matches and finished at the bottom of Group A.

Delany has played 21 One-Day Internationals, scoring 204 runs at an average of 13.60, and taking 13 wickets at 35.61. She has also played 33 T20Is and has 294 runs at 16.33 in the format, in addition to picking up 18 wickets.

Delany, 23, stating that it was an exciting time in her career, said it was an honour to lead the Ireland Women’s team, and was confident of a bright future for her side. She added that her selection shows the confidence and belief that Cricket Ireland, the selectors and coaching staff have in her, both as a player and person.

Delany accepted that it is a big responsibility for her but she felt confident that her squad knew their strengths and weaknesses and what they are capable of achieving. Delany said-

The standards that have been set before me are extremely high. It will be a privilege to captain this side. As a squad, only we know our potential and what we are capable of achieving. For a captain, that is incredibly exciting and we can’t wait for what the summer has in store.

Aaron Hamilton, the head coach, praised Delany’s shrewd cricketing brain and backed her to excel in her role with the side, adding that he admired her honesty and competitiveness, both on and off the field. Hamilton also felt that Delany’s maturity and cool-headedness will help her in overcoming the challenges ahead.

The appointment of Kim Garth, another all-rounder, as the vice-captain of the side, was also confirmed by Cricket Ireland.
