Pakistan tour of New Zealand 2016
1st ODI, New Zealand vs Pakistan at Basin Reserve, Wellington, New Zealand (24 Jan 2016)
New Zealand

280/8 (50) RR:5.6

New Zealand won by 70 runs

MOM: Henry Nicholls
Pakistan

210/10 (46) RR:4.57

The players are out there. Henry to begin..

Earlier, the Pakistani pacers feasted on the extra bounce on offer. Plenty of dismissals were of short deliveries which lifted awkwardly. New Zealand didn't help their cause either with an array of rash shots being exhibited. So all in all, in this first innings, both teams were trying to outdo the other in mediocrity. But the visitors showed they can't be matched. 280 looks plenty on this wicket. Will require some doing to get there. Join us in a short while for Pakistan's reply..

I still can't believe this. Weren't the Kiwis 99/6 at one stage? And yet, they have recovered dramatically. Or rather, been allowed to recover. A masterclass from Pakistan - in how to let it all slip. Inexplicable stuff. Just when the pacers were ruling the roost, Azhar decided to go with spin. And that's where the partnership between Santner and Nicholls started to flourish. Take nothing away from the duo though. They were heroic in the way they kept their cool. But still, that's what it comes down to - should they have been allowed to?

Boult 4(1) Matt Henry 48(30) Anwar Ali 9-0-66-3

49.6 - Anwar Ali to Boult, FOUR, and NZ end with a boundary. How apt. Outside edge runs away fine. Finish with 280 in the end

49.5 - Anwar Ali to McClenaghan, no run, oh dear, dear, dear. Oh no. Please attend to McClenaghan. The slower bouncer has gone through the grille and got cushioned in the gap. Boy, this could be bad. What's heartening to see is that he's got up and seems to be fine. Won't continue though

And another Pakistani bowler has gone down. Anwar twisted his ankle and tumbled over in his delivery stride. But seems like he is okay

49.4 - Anwar Ali to McClenaghan, FOUR, another full toss and another boundary. This time though, McClenaghan converted it into one by advancing. Slotted it over extra-cover

49.3 - Anwar Ali to McClenaghan, no run, backs away and in the end has to reach out to meet a yorker outside off, couldn't do so

49.2 - Anwar Ali to McClenaghan, FOUR, yes please! McClenaghan got into position for a scoop and couldn't believe his luck after receiving a full toss. Chipped it easily over the infield down fine

49.1 - Anwar Ali to Matt Henry, 1 run, good ball. Full and very wide outside off, Henry had to stretch every muscle of his body to reach out, chips it wide of extra-cover

48.6 - Riaz to McClenaghan, SIX, dear me. That's a deathening blow. Too predictable from Riaz. McClenaghan waited for the slower short ball to arrive and slammed it over deep mid-wicket for a flat six

48.5 - Riaz to Matt Henry, 1 run, jammed wide of cover

48.4 - Riaz to Matt Henry, FOUR, anywhere will do. That's the mantra. Shortish outside off, tries to heave it hard, gets a top edge which runs away fine

48.3 - Riaz to Matt Henry, no run, deja vu. Henry misreads a slower short ball, swings and misses

48.2 - Riaz to McClenaghan, 1 run, fullish on off, drilled to long-on

48.1 - Riaz to McClenaghan, no run, slower short ball outside off, dips on McClenaghan's pull, takes the under edge and rolls through to the keeper

47.6 - Imad Wasim to Matt Henry, SIX, deposited over mid-wicket. Sliding on from a length towards middle, Henry slaughters it across the line

47.5 - Imad Wasim to Matt Henry, FOUR, slogs wildly, the ball has gone in a diagonally opposite direction than he intended but the result is good enough. Flew off the top edge and cleared third man

47.4 - Imad Wasim to McClenaghan, 1 run, flatter on middle and leg, clipped to deep mid-wicket

47.3 - Imad Wasim to McClenaghan, 2 runs, whipped through mid-wicket. Always wanted two and makes it back with ease

47.2 - Imad Wasim to McClenaghan, no run, tries a reverse lap but hits it straight to short third man. Shouts "no"

47.1 - Imad Wasim to Matt Henry, 1 run, fired into the blockhole on middle and leg, Henry squeezes it behind square

46.6 - Anwar Ali to McClenaghan, FOUR, now improvises. Gets into position for the scoop, and effortlessly chips it over short fine leg

46.5 - Anwar Ali to Matt Henry, 1 run, similar delivery, this time Henry is able to hold his shot for that much longer. Toe-ends it through square leg

46.4 - Anwar Ali to Matt Henry, no run, slower short ball being put to good effect. Henry is fooled on the pull for a gazillionth time. Too early

46.3 - Anwar Ali to Matt Henry, SIX, lofted and clears long-off. This is a nightmare for Pakistan. Full ball around off, Henry swings through the line and makes a good enough connection

46.2 - Anwar Ali to McClenaghan, 1 run, drags a slog to deep square leg. Got beat by the slowness of the delivery

46.2 - Anwar Ali to McClenaghan, wide, saw the batsman walk across and bowled it very wide outside off, McClenaghan is happy to collect a wide

Amir has pulled up here. Something to do with his foot. In fact, he's limping off. Anwar to complete the over

46.1 - Amir to McClenaghan, no run, short of length delivery outside off, McClenaghan looks to forehand it down the ground, is beaten by the extra-bounce on the top-edge

45.6 - Riaz to Matt Henry, no run, where was this ball earlier? Into the blockhole outside off, Henry fails to get any bat

45.5 - Riaz to Matt Henry, SIX, third six of the over. Quick short ball climbing awkward towards Henry's chest, he brandishes a makeshift pull, flies off the top edge over fine leg assisted by the wind

45.4 - Riaz to Matt Henry, SIX, fire being met with fire here. Right in the slot on a good length around off, Henry has clouted it over deep mid-wicket. Huge that

45.3 - Riaz to McClenaghan, 1 run, skips down the track and Riaz follows him with a slower length ball, somehow chops it off he inside edge through mid-wicket

45.2 - Riaz to McClenaghan, SIX, he's got that alright! Nailed it. Looked like he was waiting for the short ball, soon as it arrives he pulls it ferociously over deep backward square. Just over the leaping fielder

45.1 - Riaz to McClenaghan, no run, no mercy for the tailenders. Hurtles in a short ball outside off, McClenaghan sways away

44.6 - Anwar Ali to Matt Henry, wide, another slower bouncer but this has looped over Henry's attempted ramp shot

44.5 - Anwar Ali to Matt Henry, no run, these slower ball bouncers are being really well executed. Henry is very early into the pull, it glances off his right shoulder onto the grille of the helmet

44.4 - Anwar Ali to McClenaghan, 1 run, short ball outside off, McClenaghan is too late on the pull, gets hit high on the bat and slices it in the air wide of mid-off. Drops just short of the fielder

44.3 - Anwar Ali to McClenaghan, no run, speared into the blockhole, McClenaghan somehow digs it out

Mitchell McClenaghan, left handed bat, comes to the crease

44.2 - Anwar Ali to Henry Nicholls, out Bowled!! Chopped on! Length delivery outside off, Nicholls tries to blast it against the angle from round the wicket, only presents half of the bat on the drive, and drags it onto the timber off an inside edge. Henry Nicholls b Anwar Ali 82(111) [4s-7]

43.4 - Riaz to Matt Henry, no run, oh nasty! Flies past Henry ears as he misses another pull

43.2 - Riaz to Matt Henry, no run, that's pounded him on the right shoulder. Pacy short ball, hurried Henry as he shaped to pull, also got too big on him meaning his bat was nowhere near. Decked him hard. Needs some time to get himself together

Irfan back into the attack, and straightaway pays dividends. He does what he's been doing all day long i.e. troubling batsmen with bounce. Lifts spongily from a short of length, lobs off the top-edge of Santner's pull, and straight towards Sarfraz who had no problems despite the ball swerving in the wind. 3.3 - Amir to Latham, no run, presses across and defends a length ball towards cover-point

3.2 - Amir to Latham, 2 runs, neatly clipped away off the hips behind the man at square leg. Before the man at fine leg can cover the ground, an easy couple is completed

3.2 - Amir to Latham, wide, attempts a bumper, but bangs it slightly too short. Doesn't need to on this deck which has bounce aplenty. Latham simply drops his wrists and lets it pass. In fact, on second look, the wide call seems very harsh. Wasn't as high to warrant the extra

An ODI in Basin Reserve after a long long time and New Zealand are off to a winning return to the ground. Can they seal the series in Napier or will Pakistan fightback? Join us on 28th for the second ODI. For now, cheers and bye..

Nicholls: We made it harder for ourselves, but found a way to get back into the game. They were bowling effectively, in the right areas. Santner played positively, I could anchor the innings pretty well. Playing in the Big Bash and now today, it has been a pretty good experience for me.

Henry Nicholls is the MoM for his 82

Williamson: The first quarter - pretty low score. Nicholls anchored and the bowlers hit out. Thought we had a par score at the half-time. I thought we were smart with the ball, it was a reasonable effort. There wasn't much in it for the bowlers. 220 wouldn't have been enough, the lower order bailed us out. Unfortunate for Mitchell McClenaghan, but I thought the others stood up. Corey's (Anderson) bowling was a huge plus. Our fielding was good, we showed plenty of attitude as an unit.

Azhar Ali: I think we started very well, made most of winning the toss. At 6/99, we were in the driving seat, but missed out on a great opportunity to bowl them out. 280 turned out to be an exceptional score. We went for too many in the last few overs, but otherwise, we bowled well. The target was chaseable, the start wasn't great. Losing regular wickets after the partnership (Hafeez and Babar Azam) hurt us. There are a few positives, we will look to do better in the next game.

New Zealand go 1-0 up in the 3-match series. No one would have thought about this result when the hosts slumped to 99/6 after being asked to bat first. Nicholls and Santner lead the recovery. Henry and McClenaghan made merry towards the end, although the latter was felled by a hostile bouncer. That forced him out of the game and Williamson was left a bowler short. Elliott filled up for the breach, his bowling was disciplined and he was helped along by some reckless batting from Pakistan's openers. Hafeez and Babar Azam led the recovery, but both fell to indiscreet shots. The pressure of the rising rate took its toll on the rest and the tail collapsed badly, despite a brief fight from Sarfraz. Coach Waqar Younis will have plenty to say to his boys as the two teams head to Napier for the second game, on 28th of this month.
