But what about this stat: Every batsman reached double-figures in the innings with none going onto make fifty. That is some stat. Shows that South Africa haven't converted their starts. But with a four-pronged pace attack, they will come out hard. I'm eagerly waiting to see how Viljoen goes on this. He is a bustling bull of a guy and has impressed for the Lions in the domestic circuit. We will be back shortly for the chase...
So the South African innings has lasted close to 50 minutes today. Morris and Rabada fell early but the last-wicket pair of Morkel and Viljoen frustrated the English. Broad kept bowling short and Viljoen punished him. Anderson was taken off the attack for running on the danger area for the second time. Can't quite remember when he was warned first time in the innings. Maybe that's what Anderson was trying to convince Aleem Dar. Stokes came on and struck first ball to end the innings. Bairstow missed out on the chance to grab a record-equalling seventh catch in the innings when he dropped Morkel. A place in the record books missed there!
99.3 -
Stokes to M Morkel, out Caught by Cook!! And he strikes first ball. That's the end of that. Full outside off, Morkel drives and gets a thick edge, comfortably held by Cook at first slip, above his head, reverse-cupping it in the process. After all the drama it needed just one ball to end the innings. The players run off. M Morkel c Cook b Stokes 12(20) [4s-1]
Stokes to M Morkel, THAT'S OUT!! Caught!!
Ben Stokes [18.0-1-53-2] is back into the attack
What has happened here? Aleem Dar is having a word with Anderson and looks like there is an argument. Anderson is shaking his head. Cook is called in and the reason for that is Anderson has been warned for the second time in the innings for running on the danger area. And now he is off the attack. Anderson is a grumpy man already and he is distraught that he has been taken off the attack. Aleem Dar is a no-nonsense professional and despite all of Anderson's pleas, he stands by his decision. It looked pretty innocuous when it happened. Stokes will complete the over
99.2 -
Anderson to M Morkel, no run, length delivery on off, pushed back towards Anderson's right
99.1 -
Anderson to M Morkel, no run, dropped by Bairstow! Would've been his seventh catch of the innings. A thick edge as Morkel flayed at a ball outside off, Bairstow moved to his left and went with two hands, in front of first slip, the ball hits the wrist and goes down. He tried to catch it on the rebound but the ball was beyond his grasp as he took a tumble. Frustrating for Anderson and he is red-faced. That should've been taken, especially once the keeper got there
98.6 -
Broad to Viljoen, FOUR, this has been a very poor over from Broad. Digging it in short again and again, pays the price for it. Sharp bouncer outside off, Viljoen pulls and top-edges it over the slip cordon. Raced away
98.5 -
Broad to M Morkel, 1 run, short and angling down from round the wicket, Morkel lifts one leg up in the air and mistimes the pull, the ball rolls away to fine leg

98.3 -
Broad to Viljoen, no run, down leg again, Viljoen flicks and misses
98.2 -
Broad to Viljoen, FOUR, four more. Short and angling down leg, Viljoen gets a bit of glove on the pull, beats Bairstow comfortably down leg. Viljoen was hurried by that short ball, but a bit of glove was all it needed as it was directed down leg
98.1 -
Broad to Viljoen, FOUR, that's the 300. And a fine pull shot from Viljoen through mid-wicket. Dug in short outside off, Viljoen short-arm jabbed that and beats the desperate dive from the fielder in the deep. Hit well and beat the diving man
97.6 -
Anderson to M Morkel, no run, may have been a slight inside edge onto the pad on the flick, Morkel failing to deal with a leg-side delivery properly. The ball rolls away to safety

97.2 -
Anderson to M Morkel, no run, ooh! That is so close to taking the top of off and middle. Nipped in and beat Morkel's airy fairy drive on the rise, bounced over the stumps. Extra bounce denying Anderson a wicket there, it did everything except trim the bails
97.1 -

95.4 -
Anderson to Viljoen, no run, fullish on off, Viljoen wrists it to mid-on
95.3 -
Anderson to Viljoen, no run, wide of the crease and Anderson beats Viljoen again. Angled it in and then it straightened past the outside edge as Viljoen came forward to defend. He was playing close to his body, which meant the ball missed the edge
95.2 -
Anderson to Viljoen, no run, length on the stumps, pushed back to Anderson
95.1 -
Anderson to Viljoen, no run, close to the edge but no cigar. Bairstow wanted it though. Swung away from a good length and forced Viljoen to push at it, was very close to catching a feather

Three slips and a gully. Two men back for the short ball and a backward short leg
94.2 -
Broad to M Morkel, 1 run, pushed in front of cover and Viljoen had to put on the skates to make it, does so as he sprints across to complete the single
94.1 -
Broad to M Morkel, no run, back of a length outside off, pushed off the back foot to point
93.6 -
Anderson to Viljoen, FOUR, what a start for Viljoen with the bat in Tests. An attempted yorker from Anderson, turns out to be a low full toss, punched past the diving mid-on. Just came forward and stroked it away. He will remember this moment for a long while
Three slips and a gully in place for Viljoen

Morne Morkel, left handed bat, comes to the crease
93.3 -
Anderson to Rabada, out Caught by Bairstow!! There you go, that's the edge. And a sixth catch for Bairstow. The perfect line and length from Anderson, opens Rabada up on the back foot defence, a thick edge as the back of a length delivery climbs sharply and induces the error. Bairstow takes it to his left and throws the ball in delight. Pretty sure that Anderson must be the most happiest man at the Wanderers at the moment. That's a record-equalling catch by Bairstow at this venue as well. Rabada c Bairstow b Anderson 24(64) [4s-2 6s-1]
Anderson to Rabada, THAT'S OUT!! Caught!!
93.2 -
Anderson to Rabada, no run, another delivery that beats Rabada's bat by a mile. Angled across Rabada and it bounces through to the keeper beating Rabada's attempt at a defence. He was nowhere near in any position to play that
93.1 -
Anderson to Rabada, no run, meanwhile Anderson continues to bowl without any luck. Climbs sharply from a back of a length outside off and beats a fending Rabada's bat. No nick though
Hardus Viljoen, right handed bat, comes to the crease
92.6 -
Broad to C Morris, out Caught by Bairstow!! Finally the pesky little stand has been broken. Full outside off, straightens and draws a loose drive from Morris. A thick edge and a fifth catch for Bairstow. Simple dismissal. Morris' useful contribution comes to an end and the English team would be a relieved lot. C Morris c Bairstow b Broad 28(61) [4s-4]
Broad to C Morris, THAT'S OUT!! Caught!!

91.6 -

91.5 -
Anderson to C Morris, 1 run, a thick outside edge this time as Morris hung his bat out to defend, bounces in front of Stokes at gully and he can't stop it cleanly. They take a single after the misfield
91.4 -

This is turning out to be a irritating little stand
90.6 -
Broad to Rabada, no run, back of a length outside off, Rabada leaves
90.5 -
Broad to Rabada, byes, FOUR, again it is byes. This time down leg, Rabada pulled and missed, Bairstow dives to his right and the ball went under his glove. That's four more bonus runs to South Africa. Broad and England won't like that one bit

Broad to Rabada, 2 runs, pitched up outside off, Rabada just lifted that over Broad's head, mid-off was wide and they take a couple before the ball is hunted down. Just a checked drive in the air as Rabada came reluctantly forward

89.2 -
Anderson to Rabada, no run, now Anderson squares Rabada up with a good length delivery on middle, the thick outside edge doesn't carry to backward point. Rabada was opened up but since Anderson's pace isn't great it didn't carry to the fielder
89.1 -
Anderson to Rabada, no run, that's a tentative defence first up from Rabada. Wanted to leave that fourth-stump delivery alone, but the ball took the outer half and rolled to the slip cordon
There was rain in the morning but the conditions at the moment are sunny and bright. The players are out in the middle. We are all set for the action to begin. Anderson will start proceedings. Rabada is on strike. Yesterday he bowled well without luck, beating Rabada's bat many times. Let's see what he has in store today
Yesterday oddly seemed like a battle of weaknesses rather than the strengths. England kept their jaffas sandwiched between mediocre spells of bowling while South Africa picked up tame deliveries to handout their wickets. In the backdrop of the famed bowling duo looking conquered, Finn and Stokes reigned with Broad-like bounce and Anderson-like swing on an obliging and oddly grassy surface. Timely wickets denied a shoulder-drooping partnership until one for the 8th wicket where Rabada-Morris ticked it around corners to pile up 42 runs. Neither AB's flair nor Amla's serenity but Elgar's grit top-scored with 47. It's to be seen how many more South Africa's lower order can steal against a newish ball on a sweaty pitch under cloud-thronged skies.
Day 2: They say one should never trust a stranger and a limping dog. Being the cricket nerd and the compulsive quotation-tweaker that I'm, I'd suggest adding "weather forecasts" to that list of untrustworthy nonentities. It's another cloudy day at Johannesburg with "patches of rain" being the researched prophesy. But so was the case yesterday when we were able to sneak in 89 overs of unadulterated cricket, where the groundsmen didn't have to do the cover-carrying rain jogs. So, fingers and limbs and my whole torso crossed for another day devoid of rain. Pray to the Cricket God who according to many temples in Mumbai. Hello and welcome from Pratyush and I along with my co-commentator Srivathsa will bring you all the action from the Bullring today.
Five bowlers bowled for England today and surprisingly the only one to go wicket-less was the senior most James Anderson. He tried everything, including some sledging during the fag end of the day. Nothing worked though. But his off day was veiled by some decent stuff from Stokes and Finn. South Africa may have committed a mistake by changing their approach in the final session. The pitch has enough in it for the pacers and the Proteas had the opportunity to keep building their innings brick by brick after a solid first session. Instead, they took the other road only to allow England to claw back into the game. Tomorrow, England would want to wrap the tail up as early as possible notwithstanding the fact that Rabada and Morris have built a nice little partnership here. Considering that the pitch is bowler-friendly, the tourists would fancy their chances to optimize the morning freshness. Join us tomorrow at 10:30 local for all the action from day 2. Bye, take care!
Stumps, Day 1: A session which clearly belonged to the visitors, a day which has been shared. While the English bowlers kept it tight in the final session, it was the reckless approach from the Proteas which cost them 4 wickets. Right after tea, de Villiers could not resist the temptation and perished trying to pull. After the departure of the big fish, the onus was on du Plessis but he followed the skipper. And just when the commentators on air were praising Dane Vilas for his talent and sympathizing with him for getting dropped after a horrendous India tour, the wicket-keeper proved that his axing was not completely unjustified. Maybe he wanted to add a few quick runs before the new cherry was taken. But he would have been better off playing in the present rather than thinking about what was to come.
88.6 -
Broad to C Morris, no run, whataay delivery! Broad ends day 1 with a jaffa. This one nipped back in late from a short length, Morris was groping at it but was beaten on the outside edge. The ball bounced extra after passing the batsman and caught everyone by surprise. Must say Morris and Rabada have survived some really great stuff from the English bowlers. To add insult to injury, the edges didn't carry and some landed safely

85.6 -
Stokes to C Morris, no run, fullish outside off, Morris drives to the right of mid-off
85.5 -
Stokes to C Morris, no run, darted down leg, Bairstow fails to glove that cleanly after Morris left that alone

Finn to Rabada, no ball, Finn has overstepped - a problem that's so common for him in Test match cricket. Rabada punched this towards cover
81.5 -

England review: Rabada is the man - NOT OUT is the signal from Aleem Dar. The appeal was for caught behind. Bairstow was dead-confident on that. UltraEdge shows absolutely nothing. Nobody appealed and it was more of a tactical review I reckon. Reviews will be reinstated after this over. So England had nothing to lose...
Just one more over to go before the bowlers have a sniff at the second new ball...

Broad to Dane Vilas, out Caught by Moeen Ali!! Good catch from Moeen Ali at fine leg. Kept his eyes on the ball despite facing the sun. Broad will be a relieved man. Yet again he tries the short stuff, this time against a settled Vilas. He pulls and could only manage a big, booming top-edge which loops high in the air towards Moeen. He ain't dropping that. For all that drama that was built before the start of the game, Vilas decides to throw it away after what has been an innings of patience and class. Remember, he was in Port Elizabeth before the start of this game. It's nearly 1000 kms away from J'burg and now he had a long, long walk back to the pavilion.
