The reduction in the number of overs and the accelerated pace of the game are not the only points differentiating Twenty20 cricket from regular ODI cricket. There have been a few other alterations that have been made, some of them forced by the reduction in the number of overs, while most others out of attempts to add to the gimmick factor of the game.

While most of the laws of the game in the 20 over format are the same as those in ODI's, here's a list of where the rulebook differs.

Quota of overs

- In proportion to the 10-over quota per bowler for the 50 over a side game, bowler quotas have been reduced to a maximum of 4 overs per bowler per innings.

Field restrictions

- The 30-yard circle restrictions will apply for the first 6 overs, during which a maximum of 2 fielders can be placed outside the circle. Quite logically, there will be no powerplay blocks - having two - three over blocks does not make sense.

- Some restrictions will be extended to beyond the first 6 overs. Not more than five fielders can be placed outside the 30-yard circle for the remaining 14 overs.

- Presumably in an attempt to dispense away with any attempt to restrict scoring with negative, leg-theory bowling, a restriction has been placed on the number of fielders that can be placed on the leg side. At any point in the game, the fielding side cannot have more than 5 fielders on the on side.

Time Restrictions

- Either team may have to face a five run penalty if, at any point in the game, the Umpire feels the team is wasting time.

- Each team has a time limit of 75 minutes to finish their quota of 20 overs in. The bowling side have to start their 20th over within the 75th minute. The batting side will awarded 6 extra runs for every full over that remains unbowled by the fielding side at the end of 75 minutes. However, the umpire has the authority to alter the number of runs being awarded if he feels the batting side is guilty of wasting time.

The Tie-Breaker

- One of the more 'frowned upon' but intriguing rules of Twenty20 is the 'Bowl-Out'. In case of a tie, five bowlers from each side bowl a ball each at the unguarded stumps. The side to hit the stumps more number of times wins. If, after 5 balls the scores are still level, the remaining players from each side will continue to ball at the stumps until a winner is arrived at by sudden death.

The Free-Hit

- Each no ball is further penalized with a 'free hit' delivery. This means that on the delivery that follows each no ball, the batsmen can be dismissed only through a run-out, obstructing the field or handling the ball or if he hits the ball twice. Thus, the batsman is allowed to go after the ball with no inhibitions or worries about being dismissed, thereby giving him a 'free-hit'.
