Facing the latest round of litmus tests to determine our shaky state of the union, the West Indies commence a home Test season featuring Sri Lanka and Australia with unsigned local contracts and clouds of doubt swirling around several prominent players.

Some of my colleagues would argue that the paragraph above could be applied to any home season over the past decade (just change countries) and I would find it difficult to disagree.  Clearly, our 'best and brightest' no longer care to pick up the game of cricket, neither do they prefer to administer it.

The cycle of ineptitude breeding ineptitude shows no end in sight with the dwindling crowds now spending their afternoons (i) debating which player would have made a difference at all, and (ii) playing 'Remember When'. Some clarity has been brought to the IPL issue with assurances given that the Windies shall be at 'full strength'.  I for one would have preferred the introduction of more new names rather than the inconsistent 'star' names being hovered before us as some sorta' salvation from shame*.  Who's kidding who here I wonder (often out loud).

I get into a bad mood quickly regarding the state of Windies cricket as there really has been so little progressive movement in the past five years, both in terms of player competence and Board vision. I believe the IPL (and its future British and Aussie counterparts) is the portent of all things to come (call it 'The Revenge of the Bookies') with most nations about to observe how many are in this sport for the money and how many are in for the pride of representing one's nation.
