38 Established Values

As has been widely acknowledged, in acres of newsprint and millions of pixels, cricket seems to be going through a somewhat turbulent period at present.

With the rise of T20, and its star studded progeny the IPL, global cricket’s ‘great and good’ have been taxed by some increasingly troubling questions of late: Is there too much money in the game? Are we witnessing the death of Test cricket? Are things about to change forever?

47 Woo Hoo....Hmmm

For the first time since 2000, the Queen's Park Oval is pleased to provide a Windies Test win - after five successive losses. So paranoid has the WICB become that it is an open secret as to why the coming home series against Australia features no games here - this despite the fact that Trinidad remains the regional game's largest revenue base!

48 The Meaning of Sport

I have a lot of friends who have little to no interest in Sports.

50 What next for the ICL?

In terms of sitting ducks, they don’t come much plumper or more finely feathered than India’s ‘rebel’ T20 circus: The Indian Cricket League, or ICL.

The brainchild of Indian power broker Subhash Chandra and designed for Indian television network Zee TV, the ICL popped it’s head above the parapet in May of last year in what was generally perceived to be a response to the sub-continent's wildly escalating price of television rights for cricket.

52 Silent Sigh

With less than two weeks to go, the Windies/ Sri Lanka ODI is not close to being sold out in Trinidad and the Trini Posse committee have taken the unprecedented move of press ads for tickets.  The Test Match? Let's just say I'll have a choice of rows to choose from.

53 About Tim Southee

Logically on the day England win their first test series in 3 years (that’s not true, is it?) I should be talking about Monty Panesar and his 6 wickets for 344 runs.

But Monty has burned me before.

55 Same As It Ever Was

Facing the latest round of litmus tests to determine our shaky state of the union, the West Indies commence a home Test season featuring Sri Lanka and Australia with unsigned local contracts and clouds of doubt swirling around several prominent players.

56 The cases for and against quotas

The quota system will bring success, joy and happiness to the South African cricket team.

South Africa is a nation of 50 million people, about 45 million of them are coloured, so bringing the game to them is what is going to secure the future of South African cricket.

58 The 'Time servers'

In any big organisation, you'll always find a certain number of 'time servers'. The sort of people who do just enough to keep from being fired, but who are unwilling or incapable of making the leap to a higher level.

59 Zimbabwe vs England

The hypocrisy in international cricket is mind boggling.

David Miliband, Britain’s Foreign Secretary has joined Flash Gordon in stating that Zimbabwe must not be allowed to tour England in the summer of 2009. Miliband is quoted as saying, “The situation in Zimbabwe is deeply concerning - I think bilateral cricket tours don’t send the right message about our concerns. This is something that needs to be discussed with the ECB and others.”
