Our View: Does it have anything to do with the captaincy?
MS Dhoni on Sunday made everyone sit up in amazement by leaving Virender Sehwag out of the team which played in the first ODI against Australia.
It was a daring, surprising move by a captain who has been under intense pressure after the nightmares of England and Australia. It seems Dhoni has decided to follow his own wisdom and take some bold decisions to turn around the fortunes of the team.
Despite the return of Sachin Tendulkar to the top-order, not many would have predicted Sehwag's omission. But the Delhi dasher, who had struck a world record 219 in his last ODI, was left on the bench to accommodate Rohit Sharma, as Dhoni put it after the match.
"No. It's not about injury. In fact, quite a few other players have a few niggles. But we also wanted to make Rohit play. An experienced player can come and go out of the side but for Rohit it may be tough for if he doesn't get a match before the second half of the series, you could find him playing in the tougher later half without much practice. It's a long series and we have to take that into account."
However, in what is a typically Indian way of doing things, Dhoni said "we have rested Sehwag" at the toss.
It wasn't just Sehwag, the non-inclusion of Zaheer Khan also came as a surprise. Dhoni later clarified that Zaheer had a problem. "I don't remember but it is with his right or left knee, but he will be fit for later games."
Dhoni decided to go in with just two pacers in Praveen Kumar and Vinay Kumar and gambled by playing three spinners in R Ashwin, Jadeja and Rahul Sharma. In hindsight, it was probably a wrong call as both Ashwin and Jadeja struggled with their line and length.
Rahul Sharma's 'illegal' deliveries!
Rahul Sharma, though, despite being expensive, looked good against the rampaging Hussey brothers in the 6.2 overs he bowled for 44 runs. Sharma was given the ball despite having completed his quota of 6 overs in the game as both the umpires and Dhoni seemed to have gotten their calculations wrong. That saw Sharma bowl two extra deliveries before he was replaced by Jadeja.
