When Dhoni first started going ballistic on the International stage, the general culture of cynicism that Indian cricket's general under performance has cultivated wandered towards the direction of the numerous Indian players who landed on the scene with a bang, but only flattered to deceive. When he started showing consistency, the comparisons invariably veered southwards, towards the direction of Adam Gilchrist. It is difficult to judge who should take this as a bigger compliment- Dhoni for being held in the same plane as Gilchrist, or Gilchrist, for being seen as the ultimate benchmark for Wicketkeeping allrounders.
After maintaining the initial promise - possibly improving upon it - for over 70 games now, Dhoni can now be said to be in a position to command a proper, evolved, head-on comparison with the Australian who can easily walk into an all time World XI side.
We take the holder of the crown and the pretender through the SquadStats filters, to try and find out which of the two have added more value to their respective sides. For the uninitiated, 'SquadStats' is a means to analyze player statistics and records as a function of the teams overall statistics, records and performance. Effectively, it looks at a situation where if Dhoni were to not play for India and Gilchrist were to not play for Australia, which team would be the poorer for it?

The Bottomline
