Day 1: SL’s hope of fighting back in the second test suffered a setback as they found themselves at 14/3 with Paranavitana, Dilshan, and Jayawardene back in pavilion. Samarweera offered some support to Sanga but just when they seemed to have settled Harris got rid of Samarweera. Prasanna played like Afridi and threw his wicket away with SL reeling at 76/5. Mathews and Sanga played sensibly before Hussey managed to snare Sanga 2 short of his fifty. After that it was just a matter of time before SL tail folded up for 174 with Mathews’ 54 being the highlight. Australian openers negotiated the rest of the day without problems as they ended 60/0.
Day 2: Lakmal managed to dislodge Watto early on day 2 and when Hughes and Clarke got out too at 116/3, SL looked like they had a chance of restricting Australia’s imminent lead to manageable amount. But Marsh and Hussey, one a debutant and other a veteran, batted superbly to regain the initiative and beat the Sri Lankans at their own game. They batted very patiently to cut out any risks as slowly and steadily they overtook the Sri Lankan total. Australia ended the day at a commanding 264/3 with the highlight, apart from Marsh and Hussey’s fifties, being Sanga bowling with the new ball.
Day 3: Australia continued from where they had left off as Hussey and marsh continued to dominate the seemingly toothless Sri Lankan attack as they both reached their centuries and continued towards the next landmark. Their partnership was worth 258 runs when Hussey hit Samarweera straight to cover ending his knock at 142. Marsh followed soon after for 141 triggering a mini collapse as Australia fell to 392/7 before rains ended the day play with Australia at 411/7.
Day 4: With rain threatening to wash out the play Australia declared at their overnight score of 411/7. Facing a deficit of 237 runs Sri Lankan openers came out with a positive intent to wipe out the lead. By the time Dilshan finally ran out of patience and threw away his wicket for 36 Sri Lanka were 81/1. Paranavitana went on to score a fifty in company of Sangakkara before he fell to DRS too. Sanga and Mahela ensured no more damage was done as they ended the day on 69* and 38* as Sri Lanka nearly wiped out the lead with 223/2 on board.
Day 5: Sri Lanka lost Sangakkara early on day 5 but Mahela and Samarweera kept Australians at bay till Mahela finally fell after his fifty as Sri Lanka reached 270/4, Samarweera and Prasanna batted long enough to ensure the rain was around the corner and despite their wickets Australia just couldn’t force a win as when rain halted the play Sri Lanka was ahead by 80 runs as they ended with 317/6.
