I hated cricket-on-tv when I was seven. I would want to catch up with the Christmas to New Year specials on the Cartoon network, but people at home settled for an Australian test match that always seemed to take place around that time every year, spoiling my holidays effectively. I hated the commentary filled with that many pauses – read Richie Benaud, and it wasn‘t a very interesting game to watch, to be honest. I liked playing the game, though.
I started watching the game after I knew I wasn’t getting anywhere playing it. The first tournament that I followed (live) was the 1996 World cup. Test matches came further down the line, probably after the Sachin-Kasprowicz fireworks display at Sharjah ’98. It was all Dada and God to me till then.
Though I had watched a few matches here and there, the first test match that I seriously followed was during the 2001 Australia in India series. After that, there were many of them, and slowly the truth sank in. India’s an incredibly lucky nation; we have Rahul Dravid.
To me, it doesn’t come down to the skill level or consistency or statistics at the end of the day. I value the players who make me enjoy the game…when every ball bowled is a contest between the batsman, bowler and the fielder. Cricket played that way is a treat to watch.
I have a huge list of favorite players, including but not limited to Rahul Dravid, Adam Gilchrist, Steve Waugh, Sachin Tendulkar, Graeme Hick, Hansie Cronje, Sourav Ganguly, Nathan Astle, Inzamam ul Haq, Jonty Rhodes, Chris Cairns, Micheal Bevan, Shaun Pollock, Mutthiah Muralitharan and Brian Lara.
