When a crime changed a cricketer's surname

Fleetwood Smith was an accountant with a newspaper background in India. He was born in Punjab. His wife, before their marriage, was the editor of a journal which her father founded. She was a champion swimmer and a competent pianist. But she lacked business acumen and hence hired Smith. The relationship developed over a few late-night meetings and they married within a couple of years.

A decade later, Smith 's brother (another newspaper editor) committed suicide by taking an overdose of strychnine amid business and domestic troubles.

Needing to distance themselves from this perceived shame, Smith and his wife changed their surname by joining the name and the already existing surname.

They already had a son. The son took that surname and later became a famous cricketer.

We all know him by that name and it all happened due to that suicide.

Yes, Chuck Fleetwood-Smith!
