The shadow cast by one of the light towers at Sydney Cricket Ground had been bothering the curator Athol Watkins since the second World Series Cricket season.
Towards the end of the day, batting was becoming difficult because of this shadow.
Watkins received plenty of advice.
He was discussing the problem with the 1979 West Australian Shield team and the follwoing suggestions were offered:
"Turn the lights on"
"Just paint the grass the same colour as the shadow"
"Put mirrors on the opposite side of the pylon and reflect the sun"
Watkins' own solution was no better:
"Just paint the bloody thing white...."
