He was a brilliant batsman during school and college days. But his father, who was a politician and wheat-trader, wanted his son to become a successful farmer/trader. He went against his father and went on with his cricketing pursuits.
After scoring a century for his FC team, his father came into the dressing room and was delighted with his son. Promised a pound for each of his runs that season.
After a few matches, rules were changed. It was one pound for each run scored after a hundred!
Still, his son earned handsomely that season. Later , went on to become the captain of the national side and earned a few more pounds!
Joe Darling, the great Australian cricketer.
