I'm with Michael Holding on the issue of the Minnows playing the World Cup. They should not be playing. There has to be a certain standard achieved before a team should be allowed to compete for the title of World Champions.
Admittedly, the match between Zimbabwe (who should be facing sporting sanctions) and Ireland was thrilling, but the three games that Minnows have played against test playing nations have been bloodbaths. The lopsidedness of the games are ridiculous. Also, it is annoying to see so many records being established that are not deserved. It was wonderful to watch Herschelle Gibbs hit six sixes in an over but how can one take it seriously? It was like Sandeep Patil playing in Shivaji Park (Bombayites know what I am talking about). I had the same feeling about Kapil Dev's 175 not out against Zimbabwe in '83. But at least that was made when India were in dire circumstances. I think the minnows should have their own tournament and be allowed to play in the World Cup only when they are given full test status. |
