About Me
| About Me: | Jaideep Varma India Location: Mumbai, India Cricket came into my life in 1978, when the Indian cricket team toured Pakistan after a long time. Getting hammered 2-0 in a 3-test series somehow did not diminish my enthusiasm, and I’ve been a hardcore fan since then, except for a break between 1988-1992, for reasons I don’t quite remember. Never played cricket at a competitive level, though I did bowl to Chetan Sharma at the Chandigarh nets in 1982, and he promptly despatched my artful, but misdirected leg break towards a hapless window. That broke into several dozen pieces and it led to a volley of abuses from our coach (DP Azad; also Kapil Dev’s coach) coming Chetan’s way. Unable to even glower back at him, Chetan came upto me and explained how a ball had to delivered – “Make it land like an aeroplane”, he said, hand movements emphasising profound advice. Four years later at Sharjah, after Javed Miandad had hoisted Chetan’s last ball of the match (an ugly full-toss) for Indo-Pak cricket’s most famous six, I did try to get in touch with him in case he had further tips. Had no brush with international cricket thereafter, though did follow the game closely. Have been in advertising (1988-2000), unemployed (2000-2004; published a novel called Local)) and am currently in a company called Cartwheel trying to do interesting entertainment projects. |
