About Me
| About Me: | Mark Smith United Kingdom Location: London Cricket is in my blood. I can trace back my cricketing ancestry to my great great grandfather who played for his local village side near Ashford in Kent at the end of the nineteenth century. In very simple terms, cricket is what you do in the summer - either playing or watching. It covers all occasions and all moods. Almost every time youp lay or watch the game, something will happen that you've never seen before. Each game weaves its own story - and the game lends itself to some of the best sports writing ever committed to print, from Cardus and Fingleton to Arlott, Engel and Gideon Haigh. Although I grew up, and still live, less than ten miles from the Oval, my boyhood heroes were Knott, Underwood, Asif Iqbal & Woolmer. I still firmly believe that the Kent side of the 1970's was the best domestic team ever. Yes, you can argue for Yorkshire, New South Wales and Barbados, but I don't think any other side has been so effective in all forms of the game over such a long period. I play most weekends for a local club side - up until recently I subscribed to Wes Hall's maxim when he said 'bowling is my occupation, batting is my hobby' - but recent shoulder surgery means I might have to consider a career change! Occupationally, I'm a Marketing Consultant in the financial sector. Politically, I'm very much left of centre. Domestically, I'm married with two sons named after Joe Strummer and Harry Cripps - which might give you an idea of my musical and football tastes. My other sporting love is that other 'bat and ball' game - Baseball. I'm a huge Boston Red Sox fan, and believe that Fenway Park is the most atmospheric sporting venue anywhere on earth - yes, even better than Lords! |
