Apart from their own fragile group confidence, the Windies went into yesterday’s ICC WC opener with much on their shoulders. The small matter of igniting an entire tournament which has stepped on many regional toes and sensibilities to have its run would be one of them.
And boy did they deliver.
Not just the win (the minimum requirement based on the stakes) but the energy, genuine joy and superb athleticism were exactly what the tournament organizers had been praying for and suffice to say, local media has been blanketed with re-coverage of the highlights since.
Of course Pakistan did their bit with fine bowling and big hitting in what was admittedly a cagey game filled with nervous mistakes on both sides. Going forward, Windies are expected to blood their other WC picks in this first round as obviously no one benefited from the India experiment last week. And as for us critics of Samuels, Bravo and Smith, well, I’m onto my third serving of humble pie in between paragraphs….but I’m still watching ’em.
