There is a local word that is used in Trinidad, it’s a synonym for stupid, silly or just lacking in plain common sense. Yesterday, the West Indies displayed their “dunsee’ side once again
I wrote an article a few months back on the Champions Trophy, after the West Indies had lost to Australia in the final. I commented how the Aussies were so able to adapt to conditions. If they lost wickets early on, or if they judged the pitch to be a slow one, they would adjust their target and instead of aiming for 300, they would aim for 220 and possibly more if they had wickets in hand for the slog overs. They always try to give their bowlers a chance. We saw a classic case of the WI imploding once again. Instead of setting their sights on a target that they could defend, 220 would have been ideal, they allowed themselves to be tied down. They then tried to hit their way out and ended up being bowled out with over 5 overs left on the board. Needless to say that did not help their cause one bit. The West Indies also left out their promising strike bowler, Jerome Taylor, the young man who took a hat trick against the Aussies for an extra batsman. If their highly vaunted top order could not make the runs, why would they bring in the extra batsman help in this case? What should be done is to drop the batsmen that are not performing and keep your bowlers. In all, the West Indies are showing the same lack of common sense that have plagued them for the last 10 years. I don’t see it getting better and it is a sign, more than ever, of the death kneel for West Indian cricket.
