In the 1975 WC Tourney, the West Indies thrashed a then-minnow Sri Lankan team
by 10 wickets in a match that was over before most would have finished their
morning papers.
FF to 2007 and sit with me as I watch the West Indies fall to the 'Lankans for
the second straight tournament, again failing to negotiate Vaas' swing and
Murali's/Jaya's turn - 'no hugging, no learning' in this team that's for sure.
I shall not belabour the fact that times have changed but I can rail against the
continued walking insult that is the Windies team in this Super 8.
An insult not to the game, they're simply out of their depth and disinterested,
but really an insult to hard-working (and locked-out) West Indians who warily
look to the fortunes of the team for a lift, not always in a victory but in a
committed or passionate display on the game's biggest stage. A direct contrast
to the Bangleshi team who are also losing but keeping their heads up throughout
the entire game.
Prior to the tournament, the ICC gratuity to the host nation was split 75%-25%
between the board and the players association. This ensured that 12 of the
current Windies team received in excess of US$140,000.00 - thassa' lotta' pesos
in most of our islands, and most of the world, the last time I looked. Such a
boost before the show would chuff most professionals and re-focus them on
attaining excellence on the field but obviously not this lot. Rumours
continually swirl about further demands, and Lara's recent comments about
'making the most with the players (he's) been provided' are making for an
ever-bitter brew that the average Windies fan will no longer drink from.
Can this scenario be saved? Well a win forgives everything but the current
issues now bubbling up for perhaps a final time actually threaten to
dramatically alter the regional landscape after the tournament has been
concluded. Stay tuned.
