I have tried doing it, but it's not possible. Irrespective of how
wretched, embarassing, miserable their performances may be, I simply
cannot say 'To hell with it, I am done
with supporting these losers ". When you end up falling in love with a
game, a cause, a team, you are just stuck to it irrespective of
results, defeats, wins, losses, dissapointments.
There are bound to be times - and especially so given the teams I support ( The Indian cricket team, Real Madrid F.C, the Spanish football team to name a few)- when you feel labouring through all these sleepless nights, getting anxious, worried, hoping, doing several superstitious acts , the sheer intensity of emotions and how much it takes out of you is simply not worth it, as the team you support bungles up one game after another. But then you never can stay away from your muse for too long. A day or two (or more likely, an hour or two) and you are back, hoping against hope, looking at the future, trying to look for positives....the works. Why do I feel this unusual, unexplained connection with a 'game' happening miles away (it's not just India's loss that has broken my heart, it's the hurt and harm that India's exit from the WC may do to cricket in general), with a team in which I have no blood relatives, no direct stakes, nothing ...? Why does a poor performance of a club which is not even from my country, with players not of my nationality, playing somewhere in Spain spoil my entire weekend and affect me more than things I am directly connected with do? Who knows? Who cares? You don't chose to be a supporter, you just become one. It's a part of your psyche, your make up, your very being. It's not a 'game' anymore.
The point is this, India may get knocked out of the first round in the World Cup, they may flatter to deceive for the 500th time, and they may frustrate me by straying as far away as they can from their potential, and they may keep putting in abysmal performances. But as a supporter, whether I chose to or not, I am going to be here, backing these guys up all the time. You can't decide to become a hopeless romantic, you just become one. You are cursed, or blessed, depending on the way you look at it.
I guess I wouldn't like it any other way. So guys, go ahead,do your worst. We will still be here, hooing and haaing. |
