Welcome back for Sri Lanka's reply. The players are out in the middle.

This is a good recovery from West Indies. They were 40/3 in 14.2 overs when rain stopped play, but cameos from Russell and captain Holder has given their bowlers something to bowl at. So the revised target for Sri Lanka according to the D/L method is 163. Not a big target and the hosts should fancy themselves to seal this contest.

Over: 26 6 2 1 4 2 W WI 159/8
Ramdin 9(5) Holder 36(13) Mathews 3-0-35-1

25.6 - Mathews to Ramdin, out Holder Run Out!! West Indies try to steal a bye, but the keeper fires an accuarte throw. Short and outside off stump, Ramdin swings and misses, Holder rushes to the striker's end, but Perera ran forward and then under-armed the ball onto the stumps. Holder run out (K Perera) 36(13) [4s-2 6s-3]

Mathews to Ramdin, THAT'S OUT!! Run Out!!

25.5 - Mathews to Ramdin, 2 runs, low full toss on the leg stump, Ramdin swings it away to deep square leg, good running ensures two runs

25.4 - Mathews to Ramdin, FOUR, that's a one-handed hit from Ramdin and it's almost gone all the way. Short and outside off stump, Ramdin slices the cut, but loses his bottom hand grip, the ball flies over backward point

25.3 - Mathews to Holder, 1 run, a low full toss, very difficult to get under it, Holder mistimes the drive to long-on and the second run is not there

25.2 - Mathews to Holder, 2 runs, Holder stands across the sticks, Mathews tries the yorker on the leg stump, flicked the right of the man at mid-wicket

25.1 - Mathews to Holder, SIX, Holder gets hold of it! 150 up for the West Indies. Length ball asking for punishment, Holder is a clean striker of the cricket ball, he clears his front leg and smashes it baaaannngg, over mid-wicket

Over: 25 W 1 4 6 1 2 WI 144/7
Ramdin 3(2) Holder 27(10) A Mendis 4-0-46-2

24.6 - A Mendis to Ramdin, 2 runs, very full from Mendis, Ramdin mistimes the slog to deep mid-wicket

24.5 - A Mendis to Holder, 1 run, softly nudged towards the vacant mid-wicket region, Holder wants two, but the fielder from long on rushes to the ball and prevents the second run

24.4 - A Mendis to Holder, SIX, this is turning out to be a great cameo from the West Indies skipper. Flatter and outside off stump, Holder moves across the sticks and muscles it hard over long-off

24.3 - A Mendis to Holder, FOUR, that is a handy shot from Holder. Full and outside off stump, Holder advances, had to reach out as it was bowled wide of off stump, but he did well to drive hard and beat the man at extra-cover

24.2 - A Mendis to Ramdin, 1 run, flatter delivery outside off stump, Ramdin pushes it to extra-cover

Denesh Ramdin, right handed bat, comes to the crease

24.1 - A Mendis to Brathwaite, out Bowled!! 150th ODI wicket for Ajantha Mendis. This is turning out to be a good comeback from the spinner, who was thrashed all around the park earlier in his spell. Flighted delivery on the stumps, Brathwaite goes for the loft, gets an inside edge and the ball disturbs the sticks. Brathwaite b A Mendis 9(6) [6s-1]

A Mendis to Brathwaite, THAT'S OUT!! Bowled!!

Over: 24 2 2 0 1 1 4 WI 130/6
Holder 16(7) Brathwaite 9(5) Mathews 2-0-20-1

23.6 - Mathews to Holder, FOUR, that's timed well and the placement is very good as well. Short of a length delivery outside off stump, Holder lofts it over cover to end the over on a high

23.5 - Mathews to Brathwaite, 1 run, short of length delivery on the leg stump, Brathwaite mistimes the pull to deep mid-wicket

23.4 - Mathews to Holder, 1 run, Holder moves across the line and goes for a slog, mistimes it, Senanayake runs forward from long-on and dives full length, but it just drops short of him. Great effort though

23.3 - Mathews to Holder, no run, oh this full ball swings late away from the right-hander, Holder throws the kitchen sink at it but misses

23.2 - Mathews to Holder, 2 runs, full delivery outside off stump, Holder drives it hard to the left of long-off, the throw comes to his end as he returns for the second, Holder's long strides saved him in the end

Run-out check been sent upstairs. Holder is the man in question and he's home.

23.1 - Mathews to Holder, 2 runs, full delivery from Mathews, Holder mistimes the loft to long-on, Brathwaite calls for two and makes his ground

West Indies' innings should have ended at 21:07, but there are 3 more overs to go.

Over: 23 1 0 1 Wd W 6 1 WI 120/6
Holder 7(2) Brathwaite 8(4) A Mendis 3-0-32-1

22.6 - A Mendis to Holder, 1 run, flatter delivery on the leg stump, Holder works it away to mid-wicket

22.5 - A Mendis to Holder, SIX, wow! What a start for the West Indies skipper. Tossed up and on the stumps, Holder doesn't try to over-hit the ball, just lofts it through the line and clears the long-on boundary

Jason Holder, right handed bat, comes to the crease

22.4 - A Mendis to Darren Bravo, out Bowled!! Bravo waited ages and swung really hard at it, but missed the ball completely. Nicely bowled by Mendis, he bowled this slower through the air, Bravo was beaten by the lack of pace on the ball, lost his shape while slogging and the ball crashed into middle and leg. Darren Bravo b A Mendis 38(58) [4s-3 6s-1]

A Mendis to Darren Bravo, THAT'S OUT!! Bowled!!

22.4 - A Mendis to Darren Bravo, wide, oh no! This one goes way outside off stump, easy call for the umpire

22.3 - A Mendis to Brathwaite, 1 run, full and on the stumps, Brathwaite swings it away to long-on

22.2 - A Mendis to Brathwaite, no run, Brathwaite gets down on one knee and tries the sweep, but gets hit on the pad, it was clearly missing the sticks

22.1 - A Mendis to Darren Bravo, 1 run, shortish and just outside off stump, Bravo under-edges the pull to deep mid-wicket

Over: 22 0 W Wd 1 1 1 6 WI 110/5
Brathwaite 7(2) Darren Bravo 37(56) Mathews 1-0-10-1

21.6 - Mathews to Brathwaite, SIX, stand and deliver stuff from Brathwaite. Juicy length ball on offer from Mathews, Brathwaite clears his front leg out of the way and muscles this hard over long-on. Remember, Brathwaite made a sparking hundred in the practice match

21.5 - Mathews to Darren Bravo, 1 run, short of length delivery on the stumps, Bravo pushes it to short-cover

21.4 - Mathews to Brathwaite, 1 run, this length delivery skids on and hurries Brathwaite in his defence, somehow manages to get his bat down in time and sends it to cover-point

21.3 - Mathews to Darren Bravo, 1 run, short of length delivery on the leg stump, Bravo works it through backward square leg

21.3 - Mathews to Darren Bravo, wide, down the leg-side, easy call for the umpire

Carlos Brathwaite, right handed bat, comes to the crease

21.2 - Mathews to A Russell, out Caught by Gunathilaka!! I would have to say that this is a lucky wicket for Sri Lanka and Mathews. Normally, a full ball right in the slot would be deposited deep into the stands by Russell, but he's mistimed this loft completely. Long-off settles under it and takes a comfortable catch. A Russell c Gunathilaka b Mathews 41(24) [4s-3 6s-3]

Mathews to A Russell, THAT'S OUT!! Caught!!

The Hawk-Eye to the Russell LBW appeal shows that the ball pitched in line and was crashing into the stumps. So that was a lucky escape for Russell.

21.1 - Mathews to A Russell, no run, short and outside off stump, Russell swings and misses

Angelo Mathews, right-arm fast medium, comes into the attack

Over: 21 1 1 6 1 1L 0 WI 100/4
Darren Bravo 35(54) A Russell 41(22) A Mendis 2-0-22-0

20.6 - A Mendis to Darren Bravo, no run, shortish and outside off stump, Bravo cuts and picks out the man at cover

20.5 - A Mendis to A Russell, leg byes, 1 run, huge shout for LBW, very close but not given. Flighted delivery on the leg stump, Russell misses the slog-sweep, hit in line with leg stump, but probably the ball pitched just outside leg stump

20.4 - A Mendis to Darren Bravo, 1 run, shortish from Mendis, Bravo pulls it through mid-wicket

20.3 - A Mendis to Darren Bravo, SIX, this is in the air, the fielder at long-on was interested for a while, but it jus cleared him. Flighted delivery on the stumps, Bravo mistimes the loft, yet gets a maximum

20.2 - A Mendis to A Russell, 1 run, Russell rocks back and swings hard, but the ball rolls to deep mid-wicket off the bottom of the bat

Mendis is using the towel to dry the ball.

20.1 - A Mendis to Darren Bravo, 1 run, shortish and just outside off stump, Bravo smashes it off the back foot to long-off

Ajantha Mendis [1.0-0-13-0] is back into the attack

So Malinga ends, 6-1-20-0.

Over: 20 4 0 0 2 0 0 WI 90/4
A Russell 40(20) Darren Bravo 27(50) Malinga 6-1-20-0

19.6 - Malinga to A Russell, no run, another bouncer, is it a wide? No, the umpire is happy and Russell didn't play a shot

19.5 - Malinga to A Russell, no run, bumper on the off stump, Russell sits under it

19.4 - Malinga to A Russell, 2 runs, slower delivery just outside off stump, Russell guides it between backward point and short third man, good enough for a couple of runs

19.3 - Malinga to A Russell, no run, this is strange tactics from Malinga. He's bowling short and wide outside off stump with backward point and third man inside the ring, Russell tries to upper-cut, but was late on the shot

19.2 - Malinga to A Russell, no run, oh this should have been four more, but Malinga and Sri Lanka are very lucky that Russell cut this to the right of point, who moves to his right and stops the ball

19.1 - Malinga to A Russell, FOUR, even Malinga is not spared. Slower delivery goes short and wide outside off stump, Russell cuts hard, beats point and the man at sweeper cover dives in vain. Great start to the over for the visitors

Lasith Malinga [5.0-1-14-0] is back into the attack

So Malinga to bowl his last over. Remember, only one bowler can bowl a maximum of 6 overs. Malinga has already bowled 5.

Over: 19 1 6 1 1 1 0 WI 84/4
Darren Bravo 27(50) A Russell 34(14) Senanayake 5-0-25-0

18.6 - Senanayake to Darren Bravo, no run, hit really hard off the back foot, Bravo cuts and picks out cover

18.5 - Senanayake to A Russell, 1 run, shortish and angled across, Russell under-edges the slap towards cover

18.4 - Senanayake to Darren Bravo, 1 run, sensible cricket from Bravo, just pushes this flighted delivery towards cover and gets Russell back on strike

18.3 - Senanayake to A Russell, 1 run, much better length, Russell can't get under this as it was pushed through flat, Russell guides it to short third man and gets a run

18.2 - Senanayake to A Russell, SIX, six moreeee! This man is hard to stop when he gets going. Senanayake stays round the wicket and bowls a full delivery, Russell lofts it hard over long-on and the fielder in the deep was a mere spectator

18.1 - Senanayake to Darren Bravo, 1 run, shortish and outside off stump, Bravo pulls it wide of long-on

Russell quickly moves on to 26 off just 11 balls.

Over: 18 0 1 2 1L 6 4 WI 74/4
A Russell 26(11) Darren Bravo 25(47) A Mendis 1-0-13-0

17.6 - A Mendis to A Russell, FOUR, Mendis' first over goes for 14 runs, this is just what West Indies wanted. Fired flat and full outside off stump, Russell reaches out and slices it between backward point and short third man

17.5 - A Mendis to A Russell, SIX, smashed! Not a great return to international cricket for Ajantha Mendis. This is again very full and in the slot, Russell gets down on one knee and muscles this straight back over the bowler's head for a maximum

17.4 - A Mendis to Darren Bravo, leg byes, 1 run, full and down the leg-side, Bravo tries to glance, the ball rolls off the pad to short fine leg

17.3 - A Mendis to Darren Bravo, 2 runs, that's lofted over the infield, not from the middle of the bat and the slow outfield stops the ball. Full and outside off stump, Bravo goes for the cover-drive, but doesn't get hold of it properly

17.2 - A Mendis to A Russell, 1 run, short and asking for trouble, Mendis is so lucky that Russell pulled it on the bounce to long-on

17.1 - A Mendis to A Russell, no run, flatter delivery just outside off stump, Russell mistimes the cut towards point

Ajantha Mendis, right-arm leg break, comes into the attack

Over: 17 2 6 1 0 0 2 WI 60/4
Darren Bravo 23(45) A Russell 15(7) Senanayake 4-0-15-0

16.6 - Senanayake to Darren Bravo, 2 runs, slightly short in length and that was good enough for Bravo to rock back and pull, the fielder at deep mid-wicket dives full length to his right and saves a couple of runs

16.5 - Senanayake to Darren Bravo, no run, on seeing Bravo advance, Senanayake drags the length back and keeps him calm, Bravo gets hit on the pad as he tries to work it on the on-side

16.4 - Senanayake to Darren Bravo, no run, flatter and outside off stump, Bravo chops the cut to point

16.3 - Senanayake to A Russell, 1 run, oh no! The ball clearly slips out this time, a high full toss down the leg-side, Russell swings, the under edge rolls towards short fine leg

Round the wicket

16.2 - Senanayake to A Russell, SIX, baaaangg! Flighted delivery on the off stump, Russell gets down on one knee and slog-sweeps it flat over the mid-wicket boundary

16.1 - Senanayake to A Russell, 2 runs, oh that's hit hard, looked like the ball slipped out of Senanayake's hands on that occasion. Short and outside off stump, Russell slaps very hard, the fielder at extra-cover dives to his right, but the ball escapes, the outfield has taken a lot of rain and the ball slows down in the deep

Over: 16 W 1 1 0 4 1 WI 49/4
A Russell 6(4) Darren Bravo 21(42) Jayasuriya 3-0-15-1

15.6 - Jayasuriya to A Russell, 1 run, on the leg stump, softly worked through square leg and he'll keep strike

15.5 - Jayasuriya to A Russell, FOUR, easy pickings for Russell. Full and in the slot, no flight whatsoever, Russell lofts through the line and clears the man at mid-off to pick up his first boundary of the game

15.4 - Jayasuriya to A Russell, no run, nice and straight on the stumps, Russell defends off the front foot

15.3 - Jayasuriya to Darren Bravo, 1 run, quicker through the air, punched off the back foot through mid-wicket

15.2 - Jayasuriya to A Russell, 1 run, harmless short ball on the leg stump, Russell tucks it through square leg

Andre Russell, right handed bat, comes to the crease

15.1 - Jayasuriya to J Carter, out Bowled!! That is an excellent delivery from Jayasuriya. Carter punches his bat with the glove in anger as he walks back to the dressing room. Carter was trying to play this very late towards third man, but it was all too late as he missed the quicker delivery, it skidded on and beat Carter's attempted dab before brushing the outside half of off stump. J Carter b Jayasuriya 8(20)

Jayasuriya to J Carter, THAT'S OUT!! Bowled!!

Over: 15 0 0 1 1L 0 0 WI 42/3

14.6 - Senanayake to Darren Bravo, no run, nicely bowled, slower through the air and outside off stump, Bravo slashes and misses

14.5 - Senanayake to Darren Bravo, no run, flatter and around leg stump line, Bravo gets hit on the pad, once again it was missing the sticks

14.4 - Senanayake to J Carter, leg byes, 1 run, appeal for LBW, turned down. Carter was down on one knee to paddle, missed and the ball rolled off the pad to short fine leg, the ball was probably snaking down the leg-side

14.3 - Senanayake to Darren Bravo, 1 run, shortish and outside off stump, Bravo cuts it to deep extra-cover

20:17 Local Time, 14:47 GMT, 20:17 IST: The latest news is that the game will restart at 20:30. 26 overs per side.

20:00 Local Time, 14:30 GMT, 20:00 IST: Good news once again. The drizzle has stopped and the covers are being peeled off. Hopefully, the weather will be kind on us this time.

19:50 Local Time, 14:20 GMT, 19:50 IST: It is still drizzling at the ground. "I doubt we will have a game as the drizzle is persistent and more covers are being brought on the ground," tweeted Roshan Abeysinghe a little while ago.

19:20 Local Time, 13:50 GMT, 19:20 IST: Oh dear! The drizzle is back and the covers are coming back. This is frustrating.

19:05 Local Time, 13:35 GMT, 19:05 IST: "Game has a restart at 7.30 and the overs reduced to 34 overs with the target based on the DL method," tweets Roshan Abeysinghe. So West Indies will bat for another 19.4 overs.

18:35 Local Time, 13:05 GMT, 18:35 IST: The covers are being removed, but there is a lot of water on the outfield. I assume that the groundstaff need at least 45 mins to 1 hour to get the ground back in shape.

18:28 Local Time, 12:58 GMT, 18:28 IST: Finally some good news. Then rain has stopped and the groundsmen are out in the middle.

18:24 Local Time, 12:54 GMT, 18:24 IST: It's still raining. However, it is just a light drizzle now.

18:00 Local Time, 12:30 GMT, 18:00 IST: There is a lot of water on the covers already and this is going to take some cleaning. The rain is quite steady and unrelenting.

17:30 Local Time, 12:00 GMT, 17:30 IST: Not great news folks. The rain has picked up. In fact, it is quite heavy at the moment.

17:04 Local Time, 11:34 GMT, 17:04 IST: The drizzle has picked up speed and the groundstaff are rushing with the covers. We will lose overs now. We lose one over for about every 4 minutes. Fingers crossed! Let's hope that this is a small stoppage.

14.1 - Senanayake to Darren Bravo, no run, flighted delivery just outside off stump, Bravo drives it to cover

Jonathan Carter, left handed bat, comes to the crease

7.5 - Lakmal to Samuels, out Lbw!! No end to Samuels' misery on this tour, but this one looked a bit rough on him. The ball pitched around off and nipped back in slightly, Samuels was caught in his shuffle as he looked to flick it towards the on-side. He missed and is struck on the inside part of his knee. Samuels yelped in pain and hobbled away, the umpire added to his misery by taking a long time before lifting his finger. Replays suggest that the ball was just clipping the top of leg-stump. As unlucky as it can get. Samuels lbw b Lakmal 2(13)

Lakmal to Samuels, THAT'S OUT!! Lbw!!

Samuels has been given out LBW. He wants a review. Is height an issue? Did the ball pitch outside leg? Fair delivery, looks to have pitched in line, it just needs to clip the stumps for the decision to stay. Samuels has been struck just above the knee-roll, he was on his toes, but wasn't too far forward. Looks like there's no inside edge as well. Umpire's call on hitting the stumps. Samuels is OUT

2.1 - Malinga to Darren Bravo, no run, huge shout for LBW, Malinga looks very confident and wants the captain to review it. To me thought it looked as if the impact was outside off stump. Anyway, let's go through the process. Legal ball as Malinga's front foot is fine. Oh dear! Looks like Sri Lanka are going to lose their only review. A bad review as the impact is well outside off. The third umpire wants to confirm if there was an edge before having a look at Hawk-Eye. You might wonder why they don't look at Hawk-Eye first in such cases, but there a process for DRS and the umpire has to first ensure that no bat was involved. No edge and Hawk-Eye says impact was way outside off stump. Sri Lanka lose their only review. Fullish delivery angled, Bravo tries to drive, missed and got hit on the front pad

Charles thought about the review, but then decided not to send it upstairs. Dream start for Lakmal and Sri Lanka. This good length delivery skids off the surface and thuds into Charles' pad as he fails to defend. He was beaten for pace more than anything else. The line wasn't a problem as it hit him in line with middle. The fact that it hit Charles on the back pad meant it didn't a lot of distance to travel and Hawk-Eye confirms that the ball would have crashed into the top of off stump. Charles lbw b Lakmal 1(2)

From 40/3, West Indies rode on cameos from Russell and Holder to make a great recovery after a very long rain break. In reply, Sri Lanka looked set to seal the game comfortably, but lost their plot under pressure. Eventually, it was a narrow escape for the hosts as Mendis held the nerve when it mattered. So the 3-match ODI series is off to a cracking start. These two teams will square off again at this venue for the second ODI on Wednesday. Looking forward to your company then. Take care, goodbye!

Mathews: "It was a lucky escape. We made a real mess towards the end. We were cruising through. I started off the collapse by playing a bad shot. Lesson learnt, I thought the bowlers bowled really well. It was demanding conditions. Suranga (Lakmal) bowled magnificently. They (tailenders) have been batting quite a lot in the recent past in the nets. Mendo (Ajantha Mendis)'s innings was magnificent today."

Holder: "Not too disappointed, but it's a tough loss. When Russell went off, it was a big loss because we had to bowl part-time bowlers at the end. We didn't bowl well in the first powerplay, but credit to the way we fought back. Credit to Russell for playing a breezy knock. He gave us the impetus."

Dilshan: "It was a tricky total. I think myself and Kusal set tone. We got the momentum early on. They bowled a little short to me, so I tried to take advantage. They tried to get extra bounce, but unfortunately they didn't bowl the right lengths and I capitalised. It was a good pitch to bat on. It's a good one-day wicket."

Dilshan is the Man of the Match for his 32-ball 59.

Ajantha Mendis played sensibly and also made sure that he played some attacking shots to put pressure back on the visitors. With 11 runs needed for Sri Lanka, Holder gave the penultimate over to Johnson Charles and the ploy back fired as Charles conceded the match by bowling a poor over. West Indies badly missed the services of Russell, who walked off the field after injuring himself while bowling. That meant Holder was a bowler short and it cost West Indies in the end.

It was a case of so near yet so far for the West Indies. With Kusal Perera and Dilshan getting Sri Lanka off to flier, it looked as if the hosts would hunt down 163 with some overs to spare, but West Indies fought back brilliantly to gain the upper hand. Dilshan made a breezy fifty, his 46th in ODIs, but Narine, on his return to international cricket, turned the match on its head by accounting for three wickets in a single over. All of a sudden, from 132/4, Sri Lanka were reduced to 133/7.

Mendis punches his gloves with his partner, in fact he doesn't know that he's sealed the contest for his side. He now realises that the game is over and hugs Lakmal. The Sri Lankan fans are elated in the stands. Captain Mathews is all smiles. Mendis raises his bat to the crowd as he makes his way to the dressing room. The players shake hands with each other. Phew! What a game this is!

24.5 - Charles to A Mendis, SIX, in the airrrrrr and that's gone all the way. Ajantha Mendis, you beauty! What a knock under pressure. Can't bowl length balls at this stage Charles, Mendis goes deep in the crease and across the stumps as well, throws everything at it and slogs really hard, the ball went high up in the air and cleared the long-on boundary

Free-hit coming up

24.5 - Charles to A Mendis, no ball, 2 runs, dropped, but it won't count. First he bowled a wide and now he's overstepped the line. Slower delivery on the stumps, Mendis slogs, deep mid-wicket runs forward, dives and gets both hands to it, but it doesn't stick it

24.4 - Charles to A Mendis, no run, slower delivery on the stumps, Mendis goes for an almighty slog, gets an under edge that rolls into the on-side

24.3 - Charles to Lakmal, 1 run, short of length delivery on the leg stump, Lakmal works it through square leg

24.2 - Charles to Lakmal, no run, full and on the off stump, driven back to the bowler

23.4 - J Carter to Malinga, out Lbw!! What a turnaround this is! Carter is on a hat-trick now. Nothing but a good length delivery from Carter, Malinga missed the line completely, in fact he played outside the line as he tried to defend. The ball hit him in line with leg and it was crashing into the leg stump according to Hawk-Eye. The umpire immediately raised his finger, but Malinga reviewed, only for the on-field call to be proven right. Malinga lbw b J Carter 0(1)

J Carter to Malinga, THAT'S OUT!! Lbw!!

That should be out LBW and it's given. Malinga reviews after a thought. Surely, only an edge can save him. Looked pretty straightforward. Malinga took a while to review, so that's a sign that he didn't edge it. It has clearly missed the bat. Hawk-Eye confirms that the ball would crash into the leg stump and the on-field decision is upheld.

So then, 11 runs needed with 2 wickets in hand.

23.3 - J Carter to Senanayake, out Bowled!! That's gone through the gate. This is great bowling from Carter. Maiden ODI wicket for him. He shaped the previous one away from the right-hander and then shapes this back into him. Senanayake completely foxed.
