Whew! So England finish with 318/8 - A total that didn't look possible at the half-way stage. Credit should go to Root, Hales and Stokes who dug deep and helped England post a mammoth total. You might argue 318 isn't a mammoth total considering the recent ODI trend. But 300-plus has never been chased at this venue and South Africa should chase the improbable to stay alive in the series. There's some uneven bounce and batting under lights might be a bit easier. Let's see who will play the role of Root and Stokes for South Africa. Be back in about 30 minutes...

Adil Rashid, right handed bat, comes to the crease

47.3 - Kyle Abbott to Jordan, out Caught by Duminy!! TWO IN TWO for Kyle Abbott and guess what! He's on a hat-trick now. Back-of-the-hand slower length delivery outside off, Jordan makes room and drives aerially over cover. 45.6 - M Morkel to Moeen Ali, out Caught by Amla!! Amla in the action again. Shortish and outside off, Ali shuffles and whips it nonchalantly (played it one-legged - Flamingo-esque), timed it well but placed it towards the fielder. M Morkel to Moeen Ali, THAT'S OUT!! Caught!!

Moeen Ali 2(7) Stokes 44(29) Wiese 10-0-64-1

44.6 - Wiese to Moeen Ali, no run, too full and just beside the tramline, Ali couldn't get under it, looks to squeeze it down to third man and misses

43.1 - Behardien to Stokes, 1 run, driven down to long-on

Moeen Ali, left handed bat, comes to the crease

Over: 43 0 1 4 6 1 W ENG 269/5
Root 125(113) Stokes 38(24) Wiese 9-0-61-1

42.6 - Wiese to Root, out Root Run Out!! Another run out but Root has done his job. This was a low full toss at the stumps, Root clubs it straight back and it clatters the sticks at the bowler's end. Stokes was sitting inside his crease and was never keen on the single. Root was half-way down the track as the ball ricocheted towards mid-wicket. Wiese sprints, gathers the ball and flings it to QDK who runs Joe Root out. Root wasn't even in the frame. Root run out (Wiese/de Kock) 125(113) [4s-10 6s-5]

Wiese to Root, THAT'S OUT!! Run Out!!

42.5 - Wiese to Stokes, 1 run, full delivery, drilled straight down the ground, only a single on offer

42.2 - Wiese to Root, 1 run, skips out and muscles the flat-bat stroke towards long-on

42.1 - Wiese to Root, no run, guess Root is bored of playing textbook strokes. He wants to try the out-of-the-ordinary stuff, jumps inside the crease and tries to reverse slap it towards third man, the length delivery kept low and beats Root's dancing blade

David Wiese [8.0-0-49-1] is back into the attack

Over: 42 1 1 4 1 0 1 ENG 257/4
Root 124(110) Stokes 27(21) Behardien 1-0-8-0

41.6 - Behardien to Root, 1 run, very full on middle and leg, Root was surprised by the lack of pace as he drags the drive towards long-on

41.5 - Behardien to Root, no run, Root tries to repeat what Stokes did 2 balls ago but this time the line is just outside off and Root couldn't get bat on ball - Or maybe Root was early on the stroke

41.4 - Behardien to Stokes, 1 run, on the stumps, tucked away to fine leg

41.3 - Behardien to Stokes, FOUR, Wohoooo! What was that Ben Stokes? It was a length delivery that kept a bit low, on the stumps and Stokes plays a reverse sweep, threaded the gap between backward point and short third man, superbly timed and placed!

40.5 - Rabada to Stokes, no run, yorker around off, Stokes digs it out

40.4 - Rabada to Stokes, SIX, another short one from Rabada and Stokes has smacked it. Sat up outside off and Stokes fetched it from there, middled the pull and it went for a maximum over deep mid-wicket

40.3 - Rabada to Root, 1 run, short delivery, pulled away towards fine leg

40.2 - Rabada to Stokes, leg byes, 1 run, good length delivery that pitched outside leg, Stokes was late on the flick, missed and is rapped in front of middle and leg. ABD, after a brief chat with his fielders, signals for a review but all that excitement was gone very soon...

South Africa review: For lbw against Stokes, no inside edge. Did that pitch outside leg? Looks like so and yep! It pitched outside leg and the review goes in vain...

40.1 - Rabada to Stokes, FOUR, short and begging to be hit, Stokes obliges as he clobbers the pull past a diving mid-wicket, beats the fielder to his right

39.2 - Tahir to Root, no run, dragged down and directed down leg, Root advances and doesn't allow the ball to spin, hit on the pads as he misses out on the big hit

39.1 - Tahir to Stokes, 1 run, flatter on middle and leg, flicked off the pads towards deep mid-wicket

38.6 - M Morkel to Root, no run, tailed in from a length, on the hip and Root finds backward square on the clip

38.5 - M Morkel to Root, no run, fullish and at the stumps, driven towards deepish mid-on

38.4 - M Morkel to Root, FOUR, Root has seen enough, he just wants to hit fours and sixes now. Short ball on offer and Root swivels to pull this over mid-wicket for a one-bounce four

38.3 - M Morkel to Root, no run, dabbed away towards point

38.2 - M Morkel to Root, SIX, Root is dealing in sixes here. He advances and flays this short delivery for a maximum over deep point. The fielder from sweeper looked interested but the ball was travelling...

37.4 - Tahir to Stokes, 1 run, driven to the left of a diving bowler

37.3 - Tahir to Stokes, no run, blocked from the crease

37.2 - Tahir to Root, 1 run, ever wondered why cricket experts rate Joe Root as one of the finest batsmen of this era? This is one of those many reasons. When the going gets tough, the tough get going - Root just proved that saying right. He reaches his landmark with a punch down to long-on, gets to the other end and takes his helmet off to acknowledge the applause. Well played Joe!

37.1 - Tahir to Root, no run, flatter and on the stumps, pushed towards mid-wicket

35.6 - Tahir to Root, 1 run, works this through mid-wicket and Root will keep strike

35.5 - Tahir to Root, SIX, "Imran Tahir continues to struggle" as Mic. Holding points out on air. He bowled a flurry of full tosses last match and now again! Dishes out a hip-high full toss which Root smokes it with utter disdain over the cow corner fence

33.6 - Wiese to Eoin Morgan, out Caught by Amla!! A leaping take by Amla at mid-wicket and Morgan's troubles in the middle comes to an end. This was full and around off, Morgan was going hard at it - Probably trying to hit it straight, (mistimed off the toe-end) the bat handle turns on impact and ends up offering an easy catch to Amla. Eoin Morgan c Amla b Wiese 8(24)

Wiese to Eoin Morgan, THAT'S OUT!! Caught!!

33.5 - Wiese to Eoin Morgan, 2 runs, Morgan dances down the track and goes with the pull, got it off the outside half but placed it over the man at mid-wicket

32.5 - Kyle Abbott to Eoin Morgan, no run, another swing and a miss from Morgan, length outside off and Morgan couldn't lay bat on ball

32.4 - Kyle Abbott to Eoin Morgan, no run, short of length on the stumps, Morgan punched it back towards the bowler. Abbott tried to parry it towards the stumps but couldn't do so, he appeals assuming the ball might go on and hit the stumps, but all that proved to be a fantasy

32.3 - Kyle Abbott to Root, 1 run, short and just outside off, Root pulls off the front foot, along the ground through mid-wicket

32.2 - Kyle Abbott to Eoin Morgan, 1 run, Morgan hangs back inside the crease to run this down to third man, thinks of a second but Root wasn't interested

32.1 - Kyle Abbott to Root, 1 run, hip-tickler from Abbott, on a length and Root clips it behind square on the leg-side

That will be drinks. South Africa did well to pull things back by dismissing Hales and Buttler in quick succession. Morgan looked scratchy in his brief stay while Root has looked fluent. The ball isn't coming on nicely but England will fancy their chances in the final overs. A target closer to 300 will be a good one. Just a reminder: 300 has never been chased at this venue

31.3 - Wiese to Eoin Morgan, 1 run, 132ks good length just outside off, Morgan stays still inside the crease and guides it with an open-face towards third man

31.2 - Wiese to Root, 1 run, short of length outside off, Root chops the cut behind backward point

26.5 - Rabada to Buttler, out Caught by Duminy!! Whew! A surprise. Jos Buttler who looked impeccable in the series so far is gone for a first-ball duck. Seemed like a trap from the Proteas. This full delivery was speared into Buttler's pads and he wanted to flick it fine. Placed it in the air (only for a fleeting moment) and backward short leg takes a tumbling catch to his right. Buttler c Duminy b Rabada 0(1)

Rabada to Buttler, THAT'S OUT!! Caught!!

26.4 - Rabada to Root, 1 run, serves up width on a fuller length and Root gets his timing right on this drive, a single to sweeper cover

26.3 - Rabada to Root, no run, pitched up wide of off, Root presses on the front foot and was looking to drive, his back foot was firm though, beaten on the outside edge

Jos Buttler, right handed bat, comes to the crease

26.2 - Rabada to Hales, out Caught by M Morkel!! No 100 for Hales again. It was a short delivery angled in and Hales couldn't resist his pull stroke. Could only manage a thick top-edge which flies down to fine leg. The gentle giant Morkel comes forward and accepts it gleefully. Hales c M Morkel b Rabada 65(73) [4s-8]

25.4 - M Morkel to Root, 1 run, length outside off, steered down to third man

25.3 - M Morkel to Root, FOUR, Morkel continues to keep it short and this time Root hangs back and cuts well to beat a diving backward point

25.2 - M Morkel to Hales, 1 run, short and wide, Hales tries to repeat the same, but gets a thick bottom edge down to third man

25.1 - M Morkel to Hales, FOUR, short and wide, Hales hangs back and late-cuts it wide of the cordon, well-executed!

24.5 - Rabada to Hales, wide, dug in short at the batsman, too high for Hales and deemed as a wide

24.4 - Rabada to Root, 1 run, tickled away towards fine leg, easy single

24.3 - Rabada to Root, FOUR, another inside edge and another boundary for Root, he charges down to slog this length delivery wide of mid-on. Could only get some edge on that and Rabada's pace took care of the rest. Amla tried to make a sliding stop at fine leg but to no avail

23.5 - Wiese to Hales, no run, stifled appeal for lbw but that would have probably missed leg. Short of a length delivery nipped back in to catch Hales on the shuffle, he was trying to flick, couldn't lay bat on ball. It hit him high and going by the seam, it could have missed leg

23.4 - Wiese to Hales, no run, back of a length outside off, Hales looks to cut it square on the off-side, gets a bottom edge which rolls away to point

23.3 - Wiese to Root, 1 run, 100-run partnership comes up, this was clipped off the pads through mid-wicket

22.4 - Rabada to Hales, 1 run, another slower delivery outside off, Hales gets forward and drills a drive to sweeper cover

22.3 - Rabada to Root, 1 run, slower ball bouncer, down leg, Root rolls his wrists and sort of paddle-pulls it down to fine leg, for a single

22.2 - Rabada to Hales, 1 run, on the hips and nudged around the corner. Fifty for Hales. It has been a tough grind, but the important bit is that he has stuck it out and not thrown it away

Trying to run that down to third man and a thick edge was found, QDK dived to his right and couldn't get the gloves around in time. Definite chance and what's worse is that it runs away for four. The keeper was a bit late to react

21.4 - Wiese to Hales, 1 run, full on the stumps, Hales shows the full face of the bat and drives straight down the ground, just a single

21.3 - Wiese to Hales, no run, keeps a bit low, Hales pushes it to mid-wicket, hit the inside part of the bat

21.2 - Wiese to Root, 1 run, on the pads, flicked to deep mid-wicket

21.1 - Wiese to Root, SIX, now Root gets into the act. What a fine shot that is, on a length and outside off, Root transferred his weight back and murdered the pull flat over wide long-on. Timed it so well that it went all the way. The umpire checked for a six and got confirmation

20.5 - Tahir to Hales, FOUR, Hales goes inside out and finds the gap. Uses his feet and then makes room to go over extra cover. Everyone in on the off-side and that will be four. Sweeper cover was brought in just before the ball and Hales took full toll of that move. Smart batting

20.4 - Tahir to Root, 1 run, tossed up on the stumps, Root gets forward and drives to long-off

20.3 - Tahir to Hales, 3 runs, a top-edged sweep to fine leg, in the gap and Amla runs back to prevent the boundary

Time for drinks. South Africa will be pleased with their effort. They have been on fire on the field with Faf leading the way. The selection of Wiese has added teeth to their bowling attack. It was flashed to his right at third man, he covered ground and rifled a throw in to QDK who whipped the bails off. Slight hesitation between Roy and Hales for the second and that has cost England dear. Roy didn't dive, tried to plonk his bat in as he stretched, was found an inch or two short. QDK collected the throw and then got it to the stumps. Had there been a dive, Roy would've made it. Out of nowhere South Africa grab a wicket. They needed that and the dangerous Roy is gone. Replays show that Roy was ambling along for the single, thinking that it will go to the boundary, then had to run around the bowler, which cost him precious time. 1.5 - Rabada to Hales, no run

The official broadcast has conked off. Apologies for the delay

1.4 - Rabada to Hales, no run, short of length outside off, solidly defended

1.3 - Rabada to Hales, no run, length outside off, Hales doesn't get fully forward, but his fast hands do the trick, driven to the left of Faf at point where there is a tumbling stop made

0.5 - Kyle Abbott to Jason Roy, no run, pitched up outside off, Jason Roy is on the walk, plays a one-handed drive to mid-off. Looked very awkward while dealing with that

0.4 - Kyle Abbott to Jason Roy, no run, poor from Jason Roy. The feet didn't move at all. On a length and outside off, Jason Roy with his feet stuck to the crease, tried to flash that through the off-side and missed

0.3 - Kyle Abbott to Jason Roy, no run, nervy. Almost an edge. On a short of length and outside off, bit of extra bounce and Jason Roy played a nothing shot, trying to run it down and wasn't far away from the edge

0.2 - Kyle Abbott to Jason Roy, no run, length on off, Jason Roy gets forward and strokes the ball to mid-off, solidly done, but straight to the fielder

0.1 - Kyle Abbott to Jason Roy, no run, brings it closer to off, not enough to make Jason Roy play though. Again hint of away movement for Kyle Abbott, on a fuller length and outside off, Jason Roy lets it go

0.1 - Kyle Abbott to Jason Roy, wide, very wide outside off, there was a bit of swing, but started well outside off, left alone and called a wide

Jason Roy and Hales are at the crease. Jason Roy is on strike. Kyle Abbott will open the attack

That's that from today. South Africa came back strongly to stay alive in the series. The next two games will still be do-or-die encounters for them. The fourth ODI begins same time on Friday at J'oburg. Remember, that will be a pink ODI. Hope to see you then again. Till then, good night and goodbye!!

QDK: "We know it was going to get better in the night. You just have to get your eye in and play your normal strokes, you get full value for your strokes here. In Centurion it gets very tough batting first up but in the night it does skid on a little. You have to see off the new ball and then the ball comes on nicely onto the bat. He just said to me to carry on batting (speaking about Amla)."

de Kock is the Man of the Match for his 117-ball 135

ABD: "We needed that win. We played better cricket and we deserved to win this game. We were really great on the field today and the attitude is still in the good place - that's the important thing. It is difficult to defend on this ground in the night. Many of our guys play domestic cricket here and we thought it was a chasable total. Fantastic knock by Quinton and Amla. I think that brings the best out of him (On promoting Wiese to number 3), It didn't work out today though. We are slowly but surely getting back into the series. So excited to play the next game in pink uniform."

Morgan: "I thought it was a big positive scoring 300 plus but today I thought the wicket got worse in the first innings. As the innings went on, there was a bit wear and tear and we thought we were in with a great chance at the half-way stage. Their openers got them off to a great start and our bowlers didn't hit the right lines and lengths. The ball didn't swing much either. Hopefully we can bounce back pretty quickly."

Quinton de Kock was the star today - he's just 23 years old and look out for that lad in the future. Many more to come from his blade. Jeez! What striking and what elegance. I can't remember when was the last time I was forced to mention so much about a player when Amla too played a classy knock. QDK smashed the England bowlers all over the park. The chase never looked in a hurry - it was smooth and serene. After QDK lit the chase with crash-bang-wallop strokes, Amla steadied himself to compile a ton. The gamble of sending Wiese at number three didn't work. Amla got out with less than 10 runs to get but Faf finished the proceedings with ease.

46.2 - Stokes to du Plessis, 1 run, South Africa chase the improbable - for the first time at Centurion a target of 300 plus has been achieved. With this win, South Africa stay alive and the series now reads 2-1. Coming to the winning runs: du Plessis flicked a full ball to deep backward square and jumped in delight to celebrate the victory

46.1 - Stokes to du Plessis, SIX, BAAAAAAANG! Just one hit away now. du Plessis makes full use of the free-hit, length delivery in the slot and he wallops this over the long-on fence, cleared the front leg and hit that powerfully

46.1 - Stokes to du Plessis, no ball, Oh what has happened there? No-ball for height and Faf gets a free hit next ball. It was a shoulder high full toss wide of off, du Plessis throws the kitchen sink at it, it rockets to the left of a diving cover who dives and spills the catch

It was a please hit-me ball, short and ample width on offer, Amla rises on his toes to cut, only manages a thick top-edge to the keeper. Maybe he was tired and hence couldn't middle the stroke. 28.5 - Stokes to de Kock, 1 run, there it is! QDK - you little ripper. Off comes the helmet and the dressing room stand to applaud the effort. He made batting look so easy and I'm pretty sure he has a bigger role to play in the future of South African cricket. He gets to his landmark with a pull through square leg. It is also his 10th ODI ton

England review: QDK is strangled down the leg-side? I don't think so. It's a legal delivery and replays show it came off the pad. UltraEdge confirms the same. So, England lose their only review. Buttler was the one who was keen and he prompted his skipper to go upstairs...

4.3 - Willey to Amla, FOUR, that is hit with force yet Amla looked so silky. Willey went a bit too full and Amla got forward to wrist that wide of a diving mid-off. The wrists took over and that enabled the ball to speed off the turf. Moeen Ali's dive was a despairing one

4.1 - Willey to Amla, no run, good length outside off, Amla chops it to point
