The players have walked out to the middle. Sri Lankan openers will first try and see through till tea. Anderson has the shiny cherry. Three slips in place
So that brings us to the end of the English innings, a score they would be pretty happy with considering that they had lost half their side for 83. But credit to the Lankan bowlers for creating chances and more importantly holding on to most of them. A superb century for Bairstow, who almost single-handedly took the attack to the visitors, has taken England to a par total considering the experience in the bowling line-up that the hosts have in their ranks. Do join us in 10 minutes for the Lankan response.
90.3 -
Herath to Finn, out Stumped!! It was a typical tailender-response from Finn, charged down and heaved at this flighted delivery, perhaps took his eyes off the trajectory. Was no where near the pitch of the ball, the ball dipped in and soupcon of a turn took it away from his swishing blade. Chandimal was ready for it, dislodged the bails before Finn could get his bat back into the crease. So, the hosts finish 2 runs short of the psychological figure of 300. Finn st Chandimal b Herath 17(46) [4s-3]

Welcome back to the post-lunch session. Hales and Bairstow bailed England out of choppy waters. New ball has been taken and Sri Lanka fancy their chances and clean up the tail?
Lunch, Day 2 (243/8): Remarkable turnaround this for the visitors as England slipped from a comfortable 224/5 to 233/8. It started off as a fine session for England with the overnight batsmen continuing to pile on the runs but another mini-collapse saw the back of Hales, Ali and Broad in the space of 15 balls. But the star of the session was the local Yorkshire lad, Jonny Bairstow, who stroked his way to his second Test ton off just 145 deliveries. Do join us back for the second session of play in a short while.

Charged down and tried to send Herath out of the park, the ball turned a bit, just a little to take the outer part of the toe of the bat and ballooned towards deep extra cover, where the fielder ran in a bit and dived in front to snaffle it inches off the ground. The partnership is broken. Hales was trying to bury his face in his bat as he walked back. He knew he missed out on a ton, which would have been a great start to the summer. Day 2: Hello and a very warm welcome to Day 2 of the opening Test at Leeds as another gripping day of traditional cricket beckons us. The highly inexperienced Lankan attack managed to pose some serious questions to the English top order yesterday, with the debutant Dasun Shanaka being the tormentor-in-chief. So, a chilly overcast morning and a pitch with some moisture having been under covers for a major part of yesterday, promises another cracker of a contest. Will this pair of Bairstow and Hales keep up their attack and flatten out the attack or will Sri Lanka's industrious bowlers strike back?
The match would extend 30 minutes beyond the usual schedule tomorrow in order to cover up for the overs lost today. Do join us tomorrow for another day of the real test, Test cricket. From all of us here, tata!!
Looks like that would be STUMPS on Day 1, as play has officially been called off for the day. What promised to be an intriguing final session, in reality turned out be a dampener as the rain refused to relent dashing all hopes. The English openers started the day positively with Cook and Hales looking solid before a mini collapse triggered by Dasun Shanaka consumed half their side. But Alex Hales in the company of Jonny Bairstow staged a counter-attack which now places the game delicately in the balance.
17:17 Local Time, 16:17 GMT, 21:47 IST: The umpires have taken the final call. There is no play possible anymore due to persistent rain. Play has been abandoned for the day
17:13 Local Time, 16:13 GMT, 21:43 IST: Things have not improved at Headingley and I am afraid the umpires might be tempted to call it a day soon. Stay tuned for updates
16:31 Local Time, 15:31 GMT, 21:01 IST: Even as the rain continues to be steady, the umpires have walked out to the middle and are seen talking to the groundsmen.
The covers came on as soon as the players left the ground for Tea. We are waiting for live pictures which will make it clear whether it has cleared or not. It seems the rain has picked up at Headingley and we are in for a longer delay than expected
And it is time for TEA here at Leeds and at 171/5, this game looks delicately poised with England having snatched back considerable advantage over the last hour. The English batting collapse stretched into this session with Vince and Stokes falling in quick succession to send half their side back in the hut. But this brought the local boy, Jonny Bairstow to the crease who along with Alex Hales took the attack to the Lankan bowlers with an 88-run partnership off just 126 deliveries. The Lankan strategy to pepper Bairstow with short stuff did not seem to pay off and allowed the batsmen some freebies, enabling them to come back into this match. Do join us in around 20 minutes for the final session of the day.

Welcome back. England batters walk out to the middle. The Lankans would have enjoyed the lunch for sure
Well that brings us to lunch on Day 1, 57 for 3 and the Sri Lankans have their noses well ahead at the moment, having won the toss and elected to bowl. As the sun shone through and the pitch appeared dry, the opening bowlers were unable to extract any exaggerated swing to trouble the batsmen. The openers, Cook and Hales were happy to play the waiting game and looked to capitalize on the bad balls. But the introduction of the debutant all-rounder, Dasun Shanaka, triggered a mini collapse as the hosts slid from 49 for no loss to 51 for 3. The fifth seamer was the star with the ball as he snared two wickets in the space of four balls in his second over, first that of the English captain who nicked a wide delivery to the keeper followed by that of Nick Compton, fighting for his place in the side. He then followed it up with the wicket of the new England star, Joe Root in his next over. Hales, though scratchy so far, has managed to hang around and is going to be the key for England to post a good total. Do join us back for what promises to be an intriguing second session of play in about 40 minutes.

England are back. Sri Lankan openers are back and so are we. Anderson has the new ball and more than three men in the slip cordon
The mighty English seamers have stamped their authority all over this young Lankan batting line up. Vintage Anderson was on display at Headingly as he ripped through the Lankan batting line up with good help from his opening partner, Stuart Broad to dismiss them for 91. They've only been out there for 36.4 overs and good aggressive thinking from captain Cook to enforce the follow-on. None of the Lankan batsmen could apply themselves on a track that did not have many demons in it.
36.4 -
Anderson to Eranga, out Caught by Bairstow!! Anderson has the fifer and England have asked Sri Lanka to follow-on. This was an angled delivery down the leg-side, Eranga wanted to clip it away. But the luck was not on his side. He got a faint tickle on it which carried to the keeper. The umpire did not think there was bat behind it but England use the review to see the decision getting overturned. Eranga c Bairstow b Anderson 1(6)

35.5 -
Broad to Thirimanne, out Caught by Finn!! Finn has taken another one and once again he has used every inch of his tall frame. Despite that frame he had to dive forward to take this one. Thirimanne wanted to turn away this one with the angle, the bat turned his hand and he looped it towards shortish mid-on, Finn was a little deep and rushed in, saw that was not going to make it in time so dived and got his palms under it. Follow-on looms large, but I do not think England would impose it or will they? Sri Lanka still need 8. Thirimanne c Finn b Broad 22(67) [4s-5]

Players make their way back for the final session of day 2, its going to be a long two and a half hour session. Dark clouds are hovering over the ground
Day 2, Tea (SL 43/3, Eng 298 all out): Another session that goes firmly into England's kitty. You've got to feel the Lankan bowlers wasted the second new ball by spraying it short to Finn, who played a perfect second fiddle, while Bairstow took on the bowlers productively, ensuring that England kicked on towards the 300-run mark. Against arguably the best bowling attack on the planet, the inexperience of the Lankan top-order was clearly exposed as the top three batsmen nicked almost perfect jaffas to the keeper. Will Mathews be able to script another 2014 miracle innings? Do join us in 15 minutes for the post tea session.

James Vince to Mathews, FOUR, Vince nearly had his revenge. What a wicket this would have been at the stroke of tea. There was a lot of extra bounce and Mathews had to fence it after getting on his toes, the ball took the handle of the bat and flew over third slip into the third man fence

James Vince to Mathews, FOUR, Vince has been minced. He should have been, for this was a filthy ball. Short, wide and inviting Mathews to thrash it away through the point region
James Vince, right-arm medium, comes into the attack
14.6 -
Stokes to Chandimal, FOUR, if glorious could be defined by one cover drive, this is it. Chandimal leant into it, held his shape and let his arms take over on the drive, the ball rolled along the turf through cover, following its master's command
14.5 -
Stokes to Chandimal, no run, more of a loopish delivery outside off, Chandimal has no business to do with it
14.4 -
Stokes to Chandimal, no run, touch fuller and Chandimal has it cover, push-driven to mid-off

12.5 -
Stokes to Mathews, no run, short of a good length delivery outside off, Mathews lets it go
12.4 -
Stokes to Mathews, no run, and that surprised me more than it surprised Mathews, well not exactly! Mathews was the one left perplexed. It came in a long way and Mathews was beaten by it even before he could bring his bat down, was not far from taking his off stump towards the keeper
12.3 -
Stokes to Mathews, no run, Mathews flashes at this one and is lucky that the outswing was kind to miss the edge of his bat
12.2 -

Anderson to Mathews, no run, this one did not swing and see how comfortable Mathews was this time. Got behind this one nicely and dropped in front of the fielder at short leg
10.5 -
Anderson to Mathews, no run, Mathews gets opened up a bit, did well to keep it away towards the cover region
10.4 -
Anderson to Mathews, no run, Mathews gets behind this one and guards it awat towards the gully region
10.3 -
Anderson to Mathews, no run, did he leave it? Or was it just too good to be under the radar of his bat? Length delivery changes its niddle outside off, scoots through to the keeper
10.2 -
Anderson to Mathews, no run, good length delivery on the stumps, blocked back
10.1 -

Angelo Mathews, right handed bat, comes to the crease
5.2 -
Broad to Kusal Mendis, out Caught by Bairstow!! There is no breather for me in the comm box and for the Lankan batsmen out there in the middle. They are forming a beeline out there and giving the Englishmen enough reasons to flaunt a 'Broad smile'. This one is the kind of delivery which you expect to kiss the edge of a probing bat. Mendis got his front foot forward, not in the line of the delivery perhaps, a little too across and that was enough to induce the edge. The ball moved away just a little bit, enough to send him back. Three down are the islanders and soon we will start following the follow-on equation. Kusal Mendis c Bairstow b Broad 0(2)
Broad to Kusal Mendis, THAT'S OUT!! Caught!!
5.1 -
Broad to Kusal Mendis, no run, length delivery outside off, Mendis is happy to leave

Dinesh Chandimal, right handed bat, comes to the crease
4.4 -
Anderson to Kaushal Silva, out Caught by Bairstow!! How far could Anderson be if Broad is already on the wickets chart? Peach of delivery from Anderson, angled this one and had the bounce behind it to make it even more potent. Silva was caught in two minds, the ball just kept coming at him. He wanted to leave but the ball kissed his edge even as he tried to withdraw the bat, carried at a nice height to the keeper, in front of his face in fact. SL are two down and things have just started looking a little gloomy. Kaushal Silva c Bairstow b Anderson 11(17) [4s-1]
Anderson to Kaushal Silva, THAT'S OUT!! Caught!!

Anderson to Kaushal Silva, no run, back of a length delivery just outside off, left alone
Kusal Mendis, right handed bat, comes to the crease
3.6 -
Broad to Karunaratne, out Caught by Bairstow!! As easy as they come. The angle has worked for Broad, came from round the wicket and got the ball to move away after pitching. The angle makes such deliveries tough to leave, there was no way Karunaratne could have played it otherwise. Perhaps he could have left that but poked at it instinctively and edged it towards the keeper. England strike early, 300 is not that bad a score here for sure. Why did I even use 300 and bad in a sentence. It is enough with Broad on fire. Karunaratne c Bairstow b Broad 0(12)
Broad to Karunaratne, THAT'S OUT!! Caught!!

3.1 -

2.5 -
Anderson to Karunaratne, no run, fullish from Anderson this time, just outside off, Karunaratne covers the line of the delivery and blocks
Physio is out there tending to Karunaratne, who is getting his middle finger strapped. It seemed that the ball hit him on the thumb, but it is his middle finger of the right hand. He will be fine, not much of a concern there

1.5 -
Broad to Kaushal Silva, no run, back of a length delivery well outside off, Silva is not interested in it

Anderson to Karunaratne, no run, pacy delivery angled across Karunaratne, left alone
Karunaratne and Kaushal Silva are at the crease. Karunaratne is on strike. Anderson will open the attack
This is it from us here. England were clinical. Test cricket came back after months and showed us how it has so many hidden colours draped in whites. England will party hard tonight. Mathews might want to keep a session with his compatriots, he needs to figure out how to tackle the English pace battery. He does not have much time to find the formulae. Hope he finds that soon and provides us with an even competition next time. Join us for the second Test which starts on 27th of this month. It's goodbye from Abhishek Chaudhary, Sagar Chawla, Mani and Krishna.
Bairstow: Well, it was outstanding the way Jimmy bowled. It is a pleasure to keep there, you are always there in the game. We needed to exploit the conditions here. I am pleased with the way I am striking the ball, but there are still things to be worked on. It was soft, I was really annoyed actually (on him getting disappointed after getting out). It has been absolutely fantastic, the crowd has been brilliant. It is really special for me. Really appreciate this."
Bairstow is the Man of the Match for his knock of 140 and 9 catches
Cook: "It was a ruthless performance, quite nice performance, good catching from us. If we had few more days (about the bad weather forecast), we would have batted again. We were not even sure about Ben. I thought Bairstow was batting on a different wicket. Even Hales allowed himself, was really disciplined. His partnership with Bairstow set the game for us. 280 was more than par on this track. It will be great to go up 2-0 as well."
Mathews: "It was a tough game for us. We batted poorly. Hales and Bairstow batted brilliantly for them, we even dropped a few catches. Bit of worries for us, but we need to regroup and bounce back hard. You just have to be fearless, the batters could have done better but it was against a top quality seam attack. Yeah, you have to give yourself some chance. You cannot make too many changes. We have got three days to comeback. It is tough against Anderson and Broad under these conditions."
Time to hear from the captains
When Cook imposed the follow-on yesterday, many would have thought that it was asking too much from his bowlers. But that was not the case to be. The conditions were cold and nice and he had the two best soldiers for such conditions. Anderson bowled like a champion and did not break a sweat. Sri Lanka would now know that life is not going to get easier from here.
So all it took was nine balls from England's seamers to dismantle the Lankan tail. It took Anderson years to get a five wicket haul here at Leeds and boy he did set the record straight bagging two in this very Test. There is not much to write about this game. The Three Lions played like lions and did not allow the Lankans the liberty to apply themselves.
35.3 -
Anderson to Pradeep, out Bowled!! All over. My colleague Sagar is not even done with his dinner. I was filling in for him. And here he is enjoying his dinner as players shake hands and walk back. 10 wickets for Anderson, his best figures at this venue. Straight ball, nothing like the great ones he has been bowling in this match. Pradeep looked intimidated by it, backed away and was beaten by the pace of the delivery which crashed onto middle and leg. England win by an innings and 88 runs to go 1-0 in the series. Pradeep b Anderson 0(4)
Anderson to Pradeep, THAT'S OUT!! Bowled!!
35.2 -

Four slips in place
James Anderson [13.0-5-28-4] is back into the attack

34.5 -
Finn to Pradeep, no run, this is one way of playing those, moves away and then pats it tamely to the off-side
Nuwan Pradeep, right handed bat, comes to the crease
34.4 -
Finn to Thirimanne, out Caught by Root!! Some other day, in some other universe Thirimanne would have salvaged some pride, not tonight. Not against Finn, who gets the ball to straighten from round the wicket. What was Thirimanne even thinking? Forced his bat at it, trying to shovel it through covers, edges it and the ball settles into the palms of Root at second slip. Thirimanne c Root b Finn 16(30) [4s-3]
Finn to Thirimanne, THAT'S OUT!! Caught!!
34.3 -
Finn to Eranga, 1 run, too full and straight, Eranga is relieved as he flicks it to deep backward square leg to get the senior man on strike
Shaminda Eranga, right handed bat, comes to the crease
34.2 -
Finn to Chameera, out Caught by Compton!! Guess who will be feeling guilty? It's Thirimanne, he got Chameera on strike with 5 deliveries to go in the over and Chameera cannot survive even one. Extra bounce from Finn does the trick. It came in a bit with the angle and hit the shoulder of Chameera's bat as he defended it with hard hands. The ball popped and carried to the fielder at short leg. Two more to go! Chameera c Compton b Finn 0(1)
Finn to Chameera, THAT'S OUT!! Caught!!
34.1 -
Finn to Thirimanne, 1 run, angled into Thirimanne from round the wicket and what has he done? Flicks this one to deep backward square leg and now Chameera will be on strike
We are back. And yes with clear skies, Sri Lanka have another 91 runs to get to make England bat again. England have 3 more wickets to make sure that their Saturday night plans are still on. Finn has the ball
16:40 Local Time, 15:40 GMT, 21:10 IST: It's tea on the third day. Thanks to the persistent English rain, all we could manage out here was a 70-minute session, but that proved sufficiently enough for the 'Finn-Anderson-Broad' pace combo to knock back the Lankan middle order. With the wicket having spiced up significantly and a grey overcast blanket for support, the FAB combo proved to be too good and the young batsmen did not stand a chance. With Thirimanne the lone recognized batsman at the crease, preventing the follow-on too seems like an uphill task. Do join us in 15-minutes for the final session of the day, weather permitting of course!
33.6 -
Broad to Thirimanne, 1 run, strays a bit too straight as there is no swing on this occasion, clipped away to fine leg
33.5 -

33.3 -
Broad to Thirimanne, no run, good length ball well wide of off, no need to play
33.2 -
Broad to Thirimanne, FOUR, a thick edge which flies over the slip cordon into the fence. Short, wide and Thirimanne is justified into going after it. But the bounce is so monstrous that it gets big on him
33.1 -
Broad to Thirimanne, no run, outswinger from round the wicket but it start moving a bit too early, left alone
Dushmantha Chameera, right handed bat, comes to the crease
32.6 -
Finn to Herath, out Caught by Broad!! That previous ball softened him up and he's chipped this straight to short cover. Finn throws it up full outside off, and Herath is still tizzy from the blow. He is tempted into the drive and hits it meekly straight to Broad. Herath c Broad b Finn 4(18) [4s-1]
Finn to Herath, THAT'S OUT!! Caught!!
32.5 -
Finn to Herath, no run, as if the mental agony of being beaten almost every other delivery is not enough, Herath has now been struck on the arm and is in visible pain. It's very chilly out there and this will hurt. The physio is out there and is applying some ice to minimize the swelling. A short of length delivery around off, Herath again lifts his front leg aiming to tamely jab it away across the line but misses. He's fine to continue now..
32.4 -
Finn to Herath, no run, Herath lifts his front leg and paddles this back of a length delivery to a deepish backward short leg
32.3 -
Finn to Herath, no run, oh good half-volley baited outside off, Herath is lured into a drive. The ball swings away late and beats the edge

32.1 -

Broad to Herath, no run, this one slips down the leg-side, Herath is happy to watch it through to the keeper
31.5 -
Broad to Herath, no run, fuller length and close to off, defended into the off-side
31.4 -
Broad to Herath, FOUR, sliced away in the air between the slip cordon and gully! It's a very full ball on off and Herath is in danger of being late on it. His bat comes rushing down and he somehow squeezes it away
31.3 -
Broad to Herath, no run, all at sea! All at sea! And in a ship which is pillaged by pirates. Herath is aiming a drive after seeing the fullish length, but he has missed this by atleast 6 inches as the ball moves away late
31.2 -
Broad to Herath, no run, gets this length ball to straighten just enough outside off and beat Herath's half-hearted defence
31.1 -
Broad to Herath, no run, short ball around off from round the wicket, Herath makes sure he is leg-side of the ball, thinks about some kind of stroke. While he is pondering, the ball is through him already
30.6 -
Anderson to Thirimanne, no run, well judged! Another short of length lifter outside off, Thirimanne steers clear of it
30.5 -
Anderson to Thirimanne, no run, moves to round the wicket and pounds it on a short of length outside off, left alone

29.5 -
Broad to Herath, no run, goes wafting at a full and wide ball but doesn't accomodate for the bounce and is beaten. Herath is being ambushed here
29.4 -
Broad to Herath, no run, on a good length well wide of off, left alone
29.3 -
Broad to Herath, no run, good luck playing that! Short of length delivery which kicks, springs, explodes .. whatever man. Herath is on the hop while getting opened up completely and is beaten on the outside edge. Did well actually to play the first line and not follow the ball
29.2 -
Broad to Thirimanne, 1 run, angling into the hips, tucked to fine leg
29.1 -
Broad to Thirimanne, FOUR, good pacy short ball, Thirimanne is hurried into the pull and it glances off the splice into the fine leg boundary. The man patrolling the fence there is a little square
28.6 -
Anderson to Herath, no run, Anderson is just delving into his repertoire here. Outswingers, inswingers, slanters, wobblers, you name them. This one he tries to swing away from middle and leg and Herath has to hurry to get his feet out of the way to make sure the bat isn't hindered. Gets into a tangle but manages bat on ball
That previous ball wrecked Herath's bat. He calls for a new one..
28.5 -
Anderson to Herath, no run, big inswinger headed towards middle and leg, Herath does well to get his bat down in time and bunt it beside the pitch

Rangana Herath, left handed bat, comes to the crease

Anderson to Dasun Shanaka, out Caught by Bairstow!! Anderson gets his fourth and you've got to say that there is a great sense of inevitability every time he has the ball in hand. Sooner or later, there will be a nick around, no matter how good you are. And Shanaka is no Kane Williamson. Angled into the corridor on a back of a length, darts away late and Shanaka's hands are following the ball with his feet stuck to the crease. Gets a feather. Dasun Shanaka c Bairstow b Anderson 4(16)
Anderson to Dasun Shanaka, THAT'S OUT!! Caught!!
28.2 -
Anderson to Dasun Shanaka, no run, well, now he does follow the movement with his hands and nearly nicks it behind
28.1 -
Anderson to Dasun Shanaka, no run, he did well to not follow the ball. Shanaka knew he had been done in by the movement but was happy to be playing inside the line
27.6 -
Broad to Thirimanne, no run, excellent leave! There are oohs and aahs from the fielders around but this is pretty neat judgement from Thirimanne. It's a good length ball which doesn't swing and goes on with the arm through to the keeper
27.5 -
Broad to Dasun Shanaka, 1 run, tucks this one off his hips through the mid-wicket region
27.4 -
Broad to Dasun Shanaka, no run, not very clever. Shanaka is looking to chop one through the off-side without having any room to manoeuver. He is visibly cramped in the end and is beaten on the inside edge
27.3 -
Broad to Dasun Shanaka, no run, pitches this one further up just outside off, Shanaka gets a good stride forward, gets on top of the ball and blocks it back
27.2 -
Broad to Dasun Shanaka, no run, closer to the off-stump, but still not inviting enough
27.1 -
Broad to Dasun Shanaka, no run, an easy leave as the ball is well outside off
Whatever rain was there 5 minutes earlier has ceased..The clouds still look angry though
26.6 -
Anderson to Thirimanne, no run, Anderson pulls the length back just outside off and Thirimanne is slightly more comfortable on the back foot
26.5 -
Anderson to Thirimanne, no run, he needn't have played at this away slanter but he defended it assuredly nevertheless. Good stride across to cover the angle and presented the full face
26.4 -
Anderson to Dasun Shanaka, 1 run, holds its line from a good length to square Shanaka slightly. Rolls away off the outside half of the bat behind point
26.3 -
Anderson to Dasun Shanaka, no run, length ball which carries nicely through to the keeper after being left alone outside off
26.2 -
Anderson to Dasun Shanaka, no run, short of length and into the rib-cage, Shanaka tucks it softly towards FSL
26.1 -
Anderson to Dasun Shanaka, 2 runs, just relentlessly in that fourth stump corridor. Plus there's the swing to deal with. Shanaka isn't good enough and only manages a thick edge which scoots away past gully for a couple of runs
25.6 -
Broad to Thirimanne, no run, full and slanting in towards middle, forward and defended
25.5 -
Broad to Thirimanne, FOUR, cracked off the back foot! Thirimanne gets off the mark in style. Sniffs gold as the ball lands short and wide and cuts it brutally through the covers
25.4 -
Broad to Thirimanne, no run, better line! Thirimanne is slightly ginger about leaving this one. He covers his off stump, inspects the outswing and judges it to be well outside off. Good leave
25.3 -
Broad to Thirimanne, no run, it's a big outswinger from round the wicket, phew! But it starts moving a bit too early and ends up well wide of off
25.2 -
Broad to Thirimanne, no run, nice solid punch off the back foot but finds Ali at point. Such a deep pit this, even good shots are going to fielders
25.1 -
Broad to Thirimanne, no run, turned away off the back foot to square leg with the round the wicket angle
Rain has started to come down again, not heavy enough to take the players off..
24.6 -
Anderson to Dasun Shanaka, no run, well wide of off and swinging further away, nothing doing
24.5 -
Anderson to Dasun Shanaka, no run, this one is angled in straighter and then threatens to hoop away late. Shanaka does well to conquer his instincts of working it through the on-side and defends with the full face
24.4 -
Anderson to Dasun Shanaka, no run, how do you play those? It's been slanted in from wide on the crease, Shanaka has to play for the angle but there is late swing which beats the tentative prod. Lovely lines from Anderson
24.3 -
Anderson to Dasun Shanaka, no run, might have tried an inswinger and wanted it to GO from well outside off, but the ball didn't oblige and stayed its course to the keeper
Dasun Shanaka, right handed bat, comes to the crease
24.2 -
Anderson to Kusal Mendis, out Bowled!! These little periods where you know that you just have to bat for a while and then tea/lunch will taken or even the weather might interfere are the toughest to negotiate. Mendis looks incredulous out there. It was a shortish delivery outside off, he was again indecisive, went to defend it. But was not behind the ball properly and almost chopped it off the face of the bat onto the stumps. What is happening there? Sri Lanka are back to what they did in the first innings - forming a beeline. Kusal Mendis b Anderson 53(68) [4s-8]
Anderson to Kusal Mendis, THAT'S OUT!! Bowled!!
24.1 -
Anderson to Kusal Mendis, no run, ripper just outside off, Mendis withdraws his bat just at the right time. In fact, could not withdraw it, almost poked at it
23.6 -
Broad to Thirimanne, no run, smart from Broad, got this one to come in with the angle. Thirimanne left it thinking that it will change its path again. It did not, kept coming in. Thirimanne was lucky that it did not graze the tip of his off even as he left it
23.5 -
Broad to Thirimanne, no run, back of the length delivery outside off, left alone
23.4 -
Broad to Thirimanne, no run, Broad is coming round the wicket now, gets this one to pitch outside off and then leaves the batsman, very wide, enough to allow the batsman to leave it with ease
23.3 -
Broad to Thirimanne, no run, fuller length on the pads of Thirimanne, clips it to mid-on
Lahiru Thirimanne, left handed bat, comes to the crease
23.2 -
Broad to Mathews, out Caught by Bairstow!! That's a big one! The highest scorer of the previous innings departs. It is the Lankan captain. He did not look at ease ever since he arrived. Not to forget he got a peach this time. And for someone who was there for just 12 deliveries before this one, it was too tough to tackle. Broad angled this one into Mathews and then managed to straighten it, Mathews poked at it with hard hands and that was enough for a good nick to carry to Bairstow, who could not have asked for a softer pie. Mathews c Bairstow b Broad 5(13) [4s-1]
Broad to Mathews, THAT'S OUT!! Caught!!
Three slips and a gully in place
23.1 -
Broad to Kusal Mendis, 1 run, clipped this one with ease to fine leg for a single
22.6 -
Anderson to Mathews, no run, the in-dipper raps Mathews on the pads, but there isn't much of an appeal. An inside edge maybe
22.5 -
Anderson to Mathews, no run, back of a length delivery around off, Mathews blocks from the crease
22.4 -
Anderson to Mathews, no run, oh he's got drawn into this one. Innocuous wobbler on a good length outside off, Mathews prods across tentatively but does well to loosen his grip so the thick edge goes along the ground to gully
22.3 -
Anderson to Mathews, no run, a bit too wide to tempt the Lankan skipper into a stroke
22.2 -
Anderson to Mathews, no run, it's in that leaving zone and Mathews doesn't need to swish
22.1 -
Anderson to Mathews, leg byes, FOUR, slants it into leg-stump, he's trying for the dream ball which pitches leg and hits the top of off but it goes on with the arm, takes a bit of thigh pad and races away to the fence
21.6 -
Broad to Kusal Mendis, no run, hops on the crease to ride a short of length delivery and tucks it softly into the mid-wicket region
21.5 -
Broad to Kusal Mendis, no run, more shoulder behind this one, on a good length outside off and fizzes off the deck through to the keeper
21.4 -
Broad to Mathews, 1 run, short of length delivery angled into the body and cramping Mathews for room, he fends it away off the glove behind square
21.3 -
Broad to Mathews, FOUR, a thick outside edge runs away to the third man fence. Mathews is guilty of pushing at a length ball swinging away from home, did well in the end to take the bottom hand off and it went all along the carpet
21.2 -
Broad to Mathews, no run, another loosener on a back of a length outside off, Mathews leaves it alone
So that Ali thing was just an experiment, or maybe it was done for Chandimal specifically. With the job done, he's been taken straight off
21.1 -
Broad to Mathews, no run, a loosener from Broad. Back of a length without any pace outside off, left alone
Stuart Broad [6.0-0-32-0] is back into the attack
20.6 -
Anderson to Kusal Mendis, no run, stays in the crease, allows the back of a length delivery to do its bit in the air and then defends
20.5 -
Anderson to Kusal Mendis, FOUR, fifty for Mendis, and what a brilliant stroke to bring it up with. The line is a bit too straight and he whips it with a strong bottom hand between mid-on and mid-wicket. Those reprieves seem to have liberated him into playing his game
20.4 -
Anderson to Kusal Mendis, no run, oh goes flirting with a back of a length delivery swinging away outside off, tries to punch it with the swing. But the swing is a bit overwhelming, whistles past the outside edge
20.3 -
Anderson to Kusal Mendis, no run, this one is slightly shorter than the previous one, Mendis is doing well here to play as close to the body as possible
20.2 -
Anderson to Kusal Mendis, no run, that away shape from Anderson. On a good length and curling away from off, Mendis gets half-forward and defends
20.1 -
Anderson to Kusal Mendis, no run, lots and lots of bounce from a short of length which startles Mendis. He is standing on the back foot shaping to defend but finds the ball climbing steeply, gets him on the sticker and loops up wide of gully
James Anderson [7.0-1-21-2] is back into the attack
19.6 -
Moeen Ali to Mathews, no run, slides on from a length outside off, forward and defended
19.5 -
Moeen Ali to Mathews, no run, well flighted just outside off, Mathews plants his foot down and blocks
Angelo Mathews, right handed bat, comes to the crease
19.4 -
Moeen Ali to Chandimal, out Bowled!! Oh he's chopped it back on. Moeen Ali continues to flourish as an offie at home against sub-continent sides. Chandimal senses the shortish length and hops back to cut it through the off-side. The turn cramps him up and he gets a thick under-edge to deflect it back. Maybe the rain-break wavered his concentration or maybe the introduction of spin. Chandimal b Moeen Ali 8(17) [4s-1]
Moeen Ali to Chandimal, THAT'S OUT!! Bowled!!
19.3 -
Moeen Ali to Kusal Mendis, 1 run, Mendis opts to rock back and pull a ball which isn't all that short, his hands are cramped almost like he's wearing a straitjacket but he gets it away to deep backward square
19.2 -
Moeen Ali to Kusal Mendis, no run, Bairstow has dropped one down the leg-side, not the easiest of chances though. Flatter and spinning down leg, Mendis glances it off the bat-face and the deflection is enough to put the keeper off
19.1 -
Moeen Ali to Chandimal, 1 run, loops it up on that indecisive length where the batsman can't press forward much, enough turn from off stump, Chandimal clips it to deep backward square
And we have Moeen Ali to get us up and running. Tea has been pushed back to 16.40 local leaving us with a 70 minute session.

So Anderson was the one who provided the breakthrough and just when Sri Lanka were buidling a little partnership, got the second as well. Sri Lanka could have been easily 3 down but the hosts decided to be a little kind and gave Mendis a few lifelines. It has been one and a half hours of nervous cricket for the Lankans, things will continue this way for the remainder of the Test match. You might get set but you are never really 'in' under such overcast conditions. We are awaiting an official word on whether the lunch has been take or not. But they can't stop me from sipping in my coffee, I cannot risk that getting cold. See my firm approach has forced them to take an early lunch. Join us in a while
12:47 Local Time, 11:47 GMT, 17:17 IST: And as I type this, the rain seems to have got heavier, forcing the players to vacate the field. What did Mendis have for breakfast? He can go back and have that for lunch as well. For that has worked wonders for him as the Englishmen just refuse to catch his edges and mishits.
18.6 -

17.6 -
Finn to Chandimal, no run, length ball around off, defended towards the off-side
17.5 -
Finn to Chandimal, no run, fullish delivery, veering in. Almost a yorker from Finn, Chandimal fell over trying to negotiate with his wrists, the ball eluded the bat and rapped him on his pad. The bowler, like always, wanted the captain to go upstairs to review it. Cook was not convinced though. Sagacious move, it was going down the leg-side
17.4 -
Finn to Chandimal, no run, short of a good length delivery outside off, left alone
17.3 -
Finn to Chandimal, no run, lbw appeal, a stifled one from the bowler. It was anyway too high to get the umpire interested in it
17.2 -
Finn to Kusal Mendis, 1 run, the awkward bounce on this one almost got the better of Mendis, who wanted to tuck it away. Realised that he was not tall enough to negotiate it, took his bottom hand off it, to no avail. The ball popped off his glove and went to the left of the keeper who could not reach it in time

15.2 -
Finn to Kusal Mendis, no run, Bairstow has shelled one behind the stumps, carried to him so it can termed a chance. Outside edge as Mendis was squared a bit on the defensive poke. 14.5 -
Broad to Kusal Mendis, 1 run, leading edge that tips over the fielder at mid-on, Mendis was a bit early on the shot or perhaps the ball swung away after pitching on length, inducing the edge. The fielder chased it while it was in the air, but it fell away from his reach

The Sun is out and it's a clear sky at the moment. Hopefully from here, things will hold and we get what we have assembled for - a gruelling day of Test match
We are hearing about a 11.15 local start provided there is no rain..
Hello and welcome to Day 3 of the first Test at Headingley.
The visitors have their backs to the wall after having been asked to follow-on. The Anderson-Broad duo were at their lethal best yesterday and had the young batsmen clueless. Having been bundled out for just 91 runs and failing to last 40 overs, this new Lankan line up, sans Sangakara and Jayawardene, would be keen to prove that they are more than just pushovers on this tour. On an overcast morning and on a good pitch where scoring is easy once you get your eye in, we are in for another gripping day of the real test, Test cricket.
Day 2, Stumps: Another England dominated session, another England dominated day. A brilliant century from Jonny Bairstow, followed up with some seam masterclass by the Anderson-Broad pair and some smart catching in the slips, has given the visitors a yet to be erased 206-run deficit. It would require a mammoth effort on the part of this inexperienced Lankan line up to fightback into this game. Do join us tomorrow for another day of intriguing cricket. Until then from all of us down here, goodbye!
Light meter is out. Anderson has been handed over his jumper and the SL openers walk back. I think this will be the end of the day. Yes, the covers are coming on. England players walk back, led by their captain. Plenty of applause around. We are still awaiting the confirmation whether it's stumps on Day 2 or not. Stay tuned for updates. Here is the final word from the umpires, it's stumps on Day 2.
