Welcome back.. The series is on the line. For a change, this isn't a belter. Can India's bowlers redeem themselves? Umesh has the new ball, a change of strategy from India

Here's the man of the moment, Virat Kohli giving his insight on the wicket and the partnership with Rahane, "I love batting with him (referring to his partnership with Rahane). We have had some good partnerships in the recent past, he is technically very right and very intent when running between the wickets. He (Dhoni) was charged up today. He wanted to smack a few and right from the first ball which he smacked for boundary. The guys are pretty excited for the challenge we have in front of us to make the series 2-1. The wicket is a bit on the slower side. The guys have to be smart enough to change their pace and should have learned from the previous two games."

Kohli, who had a 90+ and a 50+ in the series already, was in the mood today. He was not missing out on an opportunity for the third time, mixed caution with aggression and racked up his first ton against Australia in Australia. In the process, he went past 7000 ODI runs as well - overtook AB de Villiers to become the fastest to get to the milestone. Rahane played second fiddle to Kohli and the pair added 109 for the third wicket. Both perished while trying to accelerate and the onus was on Dhoni. And the skipper delivered with a quickfire 23 to take the team close to 300. At the toss, Smith said that the pitch will get better for batting under lights. Will that be the case? Join us back in 40 minutes to find out...

Deja vu! As has been the case at the WACA and the Gabba, one batsman scores a ton, couple of them make decent contributions and the team ends with a massive score. But will it be enough? That remains to be seen. Today was not Rohit Sharma's day as he departed early. Shikhar Dhawan came into the game with a lot of pressure which was there for everyone to see as he took his time to get going, but made sure he stays in the reckoning with a patient fifty.

R Dhawan 3(5) Ravindra Jadeja 6(5) Faulkner 10-0-63-1

49.6 - Faulkner to R Dhawan, no run, another swing and a miss and just 6 runs off the final over. And that too with an extra ball. Slower delivery outside off stump, Dhawan advance and tries to muscle the ball, only connects with thin air

49.5 - Faulkner to R Dhawan, no run, again the back and across movement from Dhawan, the slower ball again from Faulkner, Dhawan tries to slog hard but makes no contact. Inexperience showing there! Can someone tell Dhawan that the straight boundary is shorter than the mid-wicket boundary?

49.4 - Faulkner to Ravindra Jadeja, 1 run, very full and outside off stump, Jadeja can only square-drive it along the ground through cover-point

49.3 - Faulkner to R Dhawan, 1 run, Dhawan goes back and across in his crease, picks the slower delivery and slogs well, but there is protection in the deep

49.2 - Faulkner to R Dhawan, 2 runs, another slower delivery, Dhawan mistimes the slog towards mid-wicket, Jadeja races back for the second run

49.1 - Faulkner to R Dhawan, no run, good comeback from Faulkner after bowling a wide first up. Bowls the slower ball, which is only mistimed back to the bowler by Dhawan

49.1 - Faulkner to Ravindra Jadeja, 2 wides, India get two runs and this is not a legitimate delivery. Faulkner bowls way outside off stump looking for the widish yorker, Jadeja tries to reach out and make contact, but misses, awkward bounce for Wade and he can't collect properly, Rishi Dhawan calls for a run and makes his ground

Last over! 11 runs needed for 300.

Over: 49 1 0 4 6 W 1 IND 289/6
Ravindra Jadeja 5(4) R Dhawan 0(0) Hastings 10-0-58-4

48.6 - Hastings to Ravindra Jadeja, 1 run, full toss and it's gently driven along the ground to sweeper cover

Rishi Dhawan, right handed bat, comes to the crease

48.5 - Hastings to Dhoni, out Caught by Maxwell!! Dhoni tries to go big again, but holes out this time. Excellent bowling from Hastings and he picks up his 4th wicket. He saw Dhoni racing down the track and banged the slower ball short, the ball went off the toe-end of the bat, Maxwell moved forward from deep mid-wicket and completed the catch. Looks like Maxwell has hurt his finger while taking the catch. Dhoni c Maxwell b Hastings 23(9) [4s-2 6s-2]

Hastings to Dhoni, THAT'S OUT!! Caught!!

48.4 - Hastings to Dhoni, SIX, these are handy runs for India. Low full toss from Hastings as he misses the yorker, Dhoni muscles it with a strong bottom hand grip and clears the long-on boundary

48.3 - Hastings to Dhoni, FOUR, the slower delivery on the off stump, Dhoni swivels and pulls over backward square leg, the ball went off the bottom of the bat, yet it had enough power to beat the man at long leg

48.2 - Hastings to Dhoni, no run, good bowling from Hastings. Dhoni stepped out to go big, but Hastings bowled a fine yorker, in fact the Indian skipper yorked himself by advancing and he only made contact with thin air

48.1 - Hastings to Ravindra Jadeja, 1 run, low full toss outside off stump, Jadeja drives it along the ground to deep extra-cover

Over: 48 1 1 4 W 2 1 IND 277/5
Ravindra Jadeja 3(2) Dhoni 13(5) Faulkner 9-0-57-1

47.6 - Faulkner to Ravindra Jadeja, 1 run, very full and outside off stump, Jadeja drives it to extra-cover

47.5 - Faulkner to Ravindra Jadeja, 2 runs, low full toss outside off stump, Jadeja leans forward and square-drives the ball along the ground through cover-point

Ravindra Jadeja, left handed bat, comes to the crease

47.4 - Faulkner to Gurkeerat Singh, out Bowled!! Before the game, Faulkner spoke about the slower ball being effective on this surface and he's got a wicket with it now. Gurkeerat tries to slog hard, didn't read the change of pace from the left-arm bowler and the inside-edge crashed into the leg stump. Gurkeerat Singh b Faulkner 8(7) [4s-1]

Faulkner to Gurkeerat Singh, THAT'S OUT!! Bowled!!

47.3 - Faulkner to Gurkeerat Singh, FOUR, first boundary in international cricket for Gurkeerat Singh. Short of a length delivery on the leg stump, Gurkeerat pulls fiercely through backward square leg and it races away for four

47.2 - Faulkner to Dhoni, 1 run, length delivery just outside off stump, Dhoni goes for the slog and hits it on the bounce to long-on, a lofted drive would have been a better option there

47.1 - Faulkner to Gurkeerat Singh, 1 run, short and outside off stump, Gurkeerat cuts it uppishly through backward point

Over: 47 0 W 0 0 2 1 IND 268/4
Gurkeerat Singh 3(4) Dhoni 12(4) Hastings 9-0-46-3

46.6 - Hastings to Gurkeerat Singh, 1 run, short of length delivery on the leg stump, Gurkeerat glances it to fine leg

46.5 - Hastings to Gurkeerat Singh, 2 runs, Gurkeerat plays the pull, but he's mistimed this completely, was in the air for a while, but landed safely at deep mid-wicket

46.4 - Hastings to Gurkeerat Singh, no run, shortish and on the leg stump, Gurkeerat ducks under it

46.3 - Hastings to Gurkeerat Singh, no run, the debutant softly tucks the short of length delivery to mid-wicket

Gurkeerat Singh Mann, right handed bat, comes to the crease

46.2 - Hastings to Kohli, out Caught by Bailey!! In the air and straight to Bailey again. That ends a fine knock from India's No. 3. Clever piece of bowling from Hastings. He knows that the wicket is slow and bangs the slower ball short, Kohli had to manufacture a lot of pace in an attempt to hit a boundary, he went for the lofted drive and did not control it. Picked out Bailey to perfection. The Aussies will be very happy with the blow as Kohli was looking dangerous. The replays show that Kohli actually had to reach out to play that shot as he went leg-side while coming down the track. Kohli c Bailey b Hastings 117(117) [4s-7 6s-2]

Hastings to Kohli, THAT'S OUT!! Caught!!

46.1 - Hastings to Kohli, no run, oh will feel that he's missed out here! Full toss outside off stump, Kohli drives sweetly from the middle of the bat, but hits it straight to the man at cover. A couple of yards either side of the fielder would have been four

Over: 46 1 Wd 1 6 Wd 4 1 1 IND 265/3
Kohli 117(115) Dhoni 12(4) Faulkner 8-0-48-0

45.6 - Faulkner to Kohli, 1 run, short and cramping Kohli for room as he tries to advance, pulled to deep mid-wicket

45.5 - Faulkner to Dhoni, 1 run, short of length delivery outside off stump, Dhoni punches it to extra-cover

45.4 - Faulkner to Dhoni, FOUR, full toss, crashed hard and crashed for four! The pressure is on the Australian bowlers. Dhoni was ready for this delivery and he was standing across the stumps as well, expecting Faulkner to go for the widish yorker again, he drives it past the extra-cover fielder and it rocketed to the boundary

45.4 - Faulkner to Dhoni, wide, another wide from Faulkner as he tries the widish yorker, Dhoni was just ball-watching on that occasion

45.3 - Faulkner to Dhoni, SIX, the MCG is big, but not big enough for the Indian skipper. He's another player who has a strong bottom hand grip. Faulkner bowls a juicy full ball and it was right in the slot as well, Dhoni slogs and hits it flat over deep mid-wicket

45.2 - Faulkner to Kohli, 1 run, very full and outside off stump, Kohli drives it to extra-cover

45.2 - Faulkner to Kohli, wide, that's way outside off stump, left alone and called a wide

45.1 - Faulkner to Dhoni, 1 run, short of length delivery on the leg stump, Dhoni pulls it away to deep square leg

James Faulkner [7.0-0-32-0] is back into the attack

Over: 45 2 W 0 2 4 0 IND 249/3
Kohli 115(113) Dhoni 0(0) Hastings 8-0-43-2

44.6 - Hastings to Kohli, no run, terrific save. Very full, Kohli steps out and nails the cover drive, Bailey dives to his left and stops a certain boundary

44.5 - Hastings to Kohli, FOUR, oh a fumble from Maxwell and it's a four. Short delivery on the stumps, Kohli steps out and pulls, not from the middle of the bat, Maxwell runs to his left from deep mid-wicket, but fails to stop the ball, Smith, who rushed from long-on then tried to dive and stop as well, but the ball escaped

44.4 - Hastings to Kohli, 2 runs, this is tucked away gently into the vacant mid-wicket region and these two are very quick, the second run was so easily taken

44.3 - Hastings to Kohli, no run, short of length delivery from Hastings, Kohli only manages to defend as he was cramped for room

MS Dhoni, right handed bat, comes to the crease

44.2 - Hastings to Rahane, out Caught by Maxwell!! In the air, not timed well and that's a great catch in the deep. I know it will go down as caught Maxwell, but it was Smith, who did all the hard work there. Hastings bangs the slower ball short, Rahane steps out and tries to play the big hit, mistimes it completely and it goes off the toe-end of the bat, long-on runs to his right, takes the catch, but as he was close to the rope, threw it towards the approaching Maxwell, who came from deep mid-wicket and that was so easily done by the duo. Credit to Maxwell as well for ensuring that he was close to Smith and ready for the relay. Hastings runs towards the skipper and shakes hands first, before celebrating with Maxwell. Meanwhile, there is a big cheer from the crowd as they see Dhoni stride out. End of a handy innings from Rahane. Rahane c Maxwell b Hastings 50(55) [4s-4 6s-1]

Hastings to Rahane, THAT'S OUT!! Caught!!

44.1 - Hastings to Rahane, 2 runs, short of length delivery from Hastings, Rahane pulls it fine to long leg and that brings up his 15th ODI fifty. Back-to-back fifties for Jinks and he gets a loud cheer from the crowd and his team-mates

43.6 - Boland to Kohli, SIX, gee! Great shot! Can't bowl there to Kohli. Boland tried to cramp Kohli for room as he advanced and also moved leg-side, but Kohli had enough space to free his arms and muscle the loft over long-on

43.5 - Boland to Rahane, 1 run, fullish and on the off stump, Rahane glances it away to fine leg

43.4 - Boland to Kohli, 1 run, down the track and then tries to slog, bat turns it his hands it goes over mid-wicket, only for a single

43.3 - Boland to Rahane, leg byes, 1 run, fullish and swinging back in, Rahane tries to go leg-side again, misses, the ball hits the pad and stays on the pitch, Kohli calls for a quick single and hurries to the other end

43.2 - Boland to Kohli, 1 run, short of length delivery on the stumps, Kohli whips it away to backward square leg

43.1 - Boland to Rahane, 1 run, Rahane advances and mistimes the loft, it lands safely before the incoming long-on fielder

42.6 - Kane Richardson to Rahane, 1 run, full and outside off stump, Rahane drives off the front foot, the fielder at extra-cover dives to his right and makes a half stop

42.5 - Kane Richardson to Kohli, 1 run, short of length from Richardson, Kohli works it to mid-wicket

42.5 - Kane Richardson to Rahane, 2 wides, the slower ball goes down the leg-side, Wade fumbles and they steal an extra run

42.4 - Kane Richardson to Kohli, 1 run, that's it! It's a hundred for Virat Kohli and he becomes the fastest to score 24 ODI hundreds. What a player! Short of a length delivery on the off stump, Kohli works it behind square on the on-side. As he takes the run, he jumps and pumps his fist in joy. Takes the helmet off and then raises his bat to a great applause from the crowd and the dressing room. Takes a moment as he gets a bit emotional pointing the bat towards the sky. Rahane walks towards him and gives a hug. Kohli missed out at the WACA and Gabba, but not today! This guy loves the big stage. Doesn't he?

42.3 - Kane Richardson to Kohli, FOUR, only Virat Kohli, only Virat Kohli can do it! Gee, what wrists he has! Such a strong bottom hand grip. Surely, I'll tell that it wasn't a bad ball at all. Just that Kohli has played a wonderful shot. Full and on the stumps, Kohli whips it away over mid-wicket and it rockets for four. Moves to 99

42.2 - Kane Richardson to Rahane, 1 run, this is short and on the leg stump, Rahane tries to help it away fine, but fine leg tidies up

42.1 - Kane Richardson to Rahane, no run, edged but safe! The slower delivery from Richardson, Rahane steps out and tries to loft-drive, gets an edge that falls short of the incoming short third man

41.6 - Boland to Kohli, 2 runs, great over, just 5 off it! Slower delivery on the leg stump, Kohli advances and once again flicks. Both Kohli and Rahane only tried to play mid-wicket or behind square on the on-side

41.5 - Boland to Rahane, 1 run, now that's just three singles off 5 balls! Simple, yet excellent bowling. Short delivery on the stumps, Rahane works it away behind square on the on-side

41.4 - Boland to Kohli, 1 run, good bowling from Boland. He gave no room whatsoever to the advancing Kohli and India's No. 3 could only work this short of length delivery through backward square leg

41.3 - Boland to Rahane, 1 run, Rahane skips out of the crease and swings across the line, gets an under edge that rolls to long leg

41.2 - Boland to Rahane, no run, another dot ball! Slower delivery on the stumps, Rahane walks forward and across, tries to work it on the on-side, but gets hit on the thigh pad, they think about stealing a quick single, but Boland gets to the ball and keeps the batsmen calm

41.1 - Boland to Rahane, no run, short of length delivery on the off stump, Rahane flicks it to short mid-wicket

40.5 - Kane Richardson to Rahane, 1 run, full and outside off stump, Rahane lost his bottom hand grip on the drive, got an inside edge onto pad, didn't know where the ball was, in fact it stayed near the crease and Kohli called for a quick single

40.4 - Kane Richardson to Rahane, FOUR, nice hit and Rahane moves into the 40s. Short and on the stumps, Rahane rocks back and pulls it away through backward square leg, no protection in the deep and a handy boundary for India

40.3 - Kane Richardson to Kohli, 1 run, looks like Kohli has inside-edged the flick onto his leg where there is no protection, I think it hit around the knee area. He limps across to the other end for the single

40.2 - Kane Richardson to Rahane, 1 run, slower ball low full toss, Rahane steps out and drives it down to long-on

40.1 - Kane Richardson to Kohli, 1 run, driven along the ground to sweeper cover, Kohli wanted two but Rahane sent him back, Richardson disturbs the stumps after collecting the throw but Kohli was back in

37.5 - Boland to Rahane, 1 run, chipped in the airrrrr and just past the diving Bailey at short mid-wicket. Rahane was very worried for a moment. Nothing but a full delivery on the leg stump, probably it stopped on the batsman, Rahane checks his flick and almost gifts his wicket

36.4 - Faulkner to Rahane, no run, banged in short and just outside off, Rahane arches back and looks to ramp it over the keeper's head, beaten completely

36.3 - Faulkner to Rahane, FOUR, that's a fine strike from Rahane, mid-on was inside the ring, he picked up the length early and swipes it over that man, one bounce and over the ropes

26.5 - Hastings to Dhawan, out Bowled!! That was poor. You eat up balls, get back into form and throw away your wicket to a leg-side filth. A slower delivery on the leg-stump from round the wicket, Dhawan moved right across and tried to whip it away, missed the ball, which hit his pad and took the leg-stump down. Off to Rahane now. So that concludes another cracking game. WACA, Gabba, MCG - all three were high-scoring and all three were exciting and Australia broke records at all three venues. Hope you enjoyed our coverage of this game. The teams now head to Canberra for the 4th ODI. The pitches have been batsmen-friendly so far in the series. What is in store for us on January 20? Well, Smith expects the pitch to be similar to what we saw today. So another high-scorer on the cards? Let's wait until Wednesday to find out. This is Ramakrishnan signing off on behalf of Akshay, Bharath, Krishna and my co-commentators Pradeep, Pratyush and Sagar. Goodbye!

Smith: Great performance by the boys. We did well to restrict them and then got off to a good start with the bat. They bowled well in the middle and came back strongly, but then it was the Maxwell show. He took risks at the right time and it was great to see Jimmy Faulkner with him at the end as well. We'll wait and see if want to bat first in the next game. We have been playing well, but there is still room for improvement, which is really exciting and hopefully we can continue improving over the next couple of years.

Maxwell: That was a pretty amazing win. They posted a good score on a pretty slow wicket and to chase this down was really enjoyable. I think I have been making really big strides over the last few months. The way I have been hitting the ball and playing the game has been a little bit different to the previous years. Hopefully that starts to show in the results as well. It was nice to get a few out of the middle, but unfortunately I broke my No.1 bat, which was annoying. I have to call Kookaburra and try and get another one (smiles).

Glenn Maxwell is the Man of the Match

Dhoni: It's a tough loss. We didn't field well. I remember at least three boundaries could have been easily stopped and that makes a lot of difference in a tight game. I don't think there was any chance of getting any more runs. I felt 295 was a very good score. We picked up wickets in the middle, but Sran did not have a good day at the office, so that put more pressure on him and it became difficult for me to rotate the bowlers. Ashwin's exclusion is always debatable, but I thought Rishi Dhawan and Gurkeerat did a decent job. We have to realise that ours is a very inexperienced seam attack. The spinners have played a lot, but the conditions here won't really help them a lot. It was good to see Ishant bowl very well in the middle overs. Overall, when there is a bit of pressure on them (the bowlers), they start leaking runs and it becomes a bit difficult to manage.

Chasing a decent looking 296, Australia looked to be cruising around the 19th over mark. That's when Jadeja found turn. Struck twice to send Smith and Bailey back to the hutch. Then Dhoni remembered something from the epic Batman series, "Theatricality and Deception are powerful agents". And what an act of theatre he pulled off. Completely made a mockery of Mitch Marsh to run him out. India started believing. But a bloke called Glenn Maxwell had other ideas. Boy, what chutzpah! Came out, smashed. Smashed some more. And then some. Aided brilliantly by Faulkner and the duo made it look like a breeze lifting the Aussies from a precarious looking 215-6 to the doorstep of victory. A real shame that Maxi fell one hit short of a well deserved ton.

They fought. Fought hard. Kept flapping, and flapping, and flapping to stay afloat. And then they drowned. With that goes the series. Done and dusted with two more games to go. But what we had at the MCG today was a battle. A good back-and-forth boxing match. It wasn't anything like the previous two matches which were a canter really. The World Champions were pushed to the rim and given a thorough examination. Still, such is the depth of their talent that they came out soaring.

48.5 - U Yadav to Faulkner, 1 run, Finisher Faulkner attempts a quick single after tapping this length ball to point and Rohit Sharma misses a direct-hit at the bowler's end. Australia win by 3 wickets and with it take an unassailable 3-0 lead in the series. As he completes the run, Faulkner goes "woo, hoo" and then jumps and pumps his fist. Dhoni looks disappointed as he walks back to the dressing room. It's another case of so near yet so far for the Indians. Credit to Australia for constructing their chase very well. In fact, this victory is also the highest successful run-chase in ODIs at the MCG. Australia's have made it a hat-trick of record run-chases

John Hastings, right handed bat, comes to the crease

48.4 - U Yadav to Maxwell, out Caught by Dhawan!! In the airrrrr, oh he's mistimed it and Maxwell is out for 96. Brilliant innings from Maxi. Look at the applause he gets from the crowd. 48.2 - U Yadav to Maxwell, SIX, oh yes! Yes, yes yes! He wants a hundred. MCG is always a special place to get a hundred. That's a freebie from Umesh. But one understands that he was trying to bowl the yorker, offers a juicy full ball and Maxwell lofts it easily over long-on

46.6 - Ishant to Faulkner, 2 runs, gee! These inside-edges and mistimed hits along the ground are so handy in big grounds like these. Aren't they? Faulkner steps out and inside-edges the slog towards mid-wicket, the fielder in the deep had a lot of ground to cover and the batsmen had enough time to get back for the second

46.5 - Ishant to Faulkner, no run, another "wait on" from Faulkner as he cuts this short of length delivery straight to Rohit Sharma at backward point. Oops! Ishant tumbled onto the ground after delivering that ball

Fullish and on the leg stump, Maxwell flicks it straight to square leg and sets off, Faulkner sends his partner back, Maxwell was halfway down the pitch, Umesh had one stump to aim at and he opted not to throw because there was no one backing up the throw. So what? Got to back yourself to fire a direct-hit. Is that the opportunity India needed? Time will tell. He's literally sliced this all the way for six. Fifty under pressure. What a knock. Could well be a match-winning one for the Aussies

39.4 - Barinder to Maxwell, wide, oh that's harsh on the bowler, he bowled a well disguised slower ball just past the leg stump. Dhoni liked it as Maxwell didn't pick it. Wasn't too far away from the leg stump

39.3 - Barinder to Maxwell, no run, shout from Dhoni, but umpire Richard Kettleborough shakes his head. Short delivery outside off stump, Maxwell looks to cut hard, but misses. 37.5 - Barinder to Maxwell, 1 run, short delivery on the stumps, Maxwell pulls it to deep square leg

37.4 - Barinder to Wade, 1 run, Dhoni is good with his football and he almost effected a run-out here. Short of a length delivery just outside off stump, Wade defends with soft hands, so much so that it almost rolled back onto the off stump, Maxwell wanted a quick single, Wade responds, Dhoni runs forward and kicks the ball with his right leg and almost hits the stumps. A direct-hit would have been very interesting

37.3 - Barinder to Maxwell, 1 run, ha ha! Ishant Sharma gets an ironic cheer from the crowd for stopping the ball at third man. Remember, he fumbled a simple stop a few minutes ago. Short of a length delivery outside off stump, Maxwell outside edges the punch and picks up a run. Ishant sees the funny side of it as well. Waves to the crowd with a smile on his face

37.2 - Barinder to Maxwell, no run, oh hang on! Maxwell has been sensible so far and now he plays an audacious shot! I think that is why he changed his bat. Short delivery from Barinder, Maxwell goes for the pull and misses

Drinks are on the field now. The Indians are fighting well, but Maxwell holds the key for Australia.

35.1 - Barinder to Maxwell, out Mitchell Marsh Run Out!! 2 runs completed. My word! Gee, this guy, MS Dhoni, can not only captain, keep wickets and bat, he can also act. He's pretended as if the ball is not coming towards his end and that fooled Mitch Marsh. So clever! Brilliant. Add whatever you want. Full and outside off stump, Maxwell drives wide of mid-off, he wants the third run and Marsh responds well. Dhoni ran up to the stumps and was in a great position. He was standstill for a moment, which gave Marsh the impression that the throw was going to Maxwell's end, but all of a sudden, Dhoni quickly collects the ball and breaks the sticks. Must say that it was a rocket throw from Umesh Yadav, who gave chase and put in the slide to stop the ball. He has a great arm and the throw was right next to the stumps, which was key to this dismissal. Oh look at the determination in Kohli's eyes. He roars and pumps his fist. He's desperate to win this. It's 204/5 and the pressure is back on Australia. Mitchell Marsh run out (U Yadav/Dhoni) 17(14) [4s-3]

34.6 - U Yadav to Mitchell Marsh, 2 runs, oh that's a great finish to the over, just 1 run off it. Oh dear! What have you done Ishant Sharma? It should have been a dot ball, but Australia have two more runs. Look at the anger in Kohli's eyes. He's furious and that is simply unacceptable from Ishant, a senior member of the team. Good length delivery on the stumps, Marsh defends it to mid-on, Ishant fumbles and allows two

34.5 - U Yadav to Mitchell Marsh, no run, appeal for LBW again, now this is turning out to be a top over from Umesh. Fullish and swinging back in, Marsh looks to push off the front foot, impact on leg stump, but the late swing was taking it down the leg-side

34.4 - U Yadav to Mitchell Marsh, no run, short of length delivery outside off stump, Marsh pushes it to cover

34.3 - U Yadav to Maxwell, 1 run, optimistic shout for LBW, clearly hit outside the line of off stump. Length delivery angled in, Maxwell was late on the dab, the ball hits the pad before running to third man off the bat. Animated appeal from Kohli as well, but the umpire was spot on

34.2 - U Yadav to Maxwell, no run, short of length delivery on the off stump, Maxwell defends off the back foot

34.1 - U Yadav to Maxwell, no run, full and outside off stump, Maxwell drove hard, but hit it straight to mid-off

Umesh again? Won't Rishi Dhawan be a decent option at this stage? He bowls decent slower balls and there is every chance that the batsman could mistime one as they are looking to attack. Remember, the square boundaries are big here at the MCG.

The Indian fans in the stands are elated and so is Ishant, who pumps his fist in joy. Good length delivery angled across, nothing great about the ball, but that is the beauty of bowling a tight line around the off stump line. 15.5 - Gurkeerat Singh to Smith, 1 run, turns ever so slightly from a length on middle, Smith works it off the inside half of the bat behind square

15.4 - Gurkeerat Singh to Smith, no run, well bowled. Saw Smith come and held it further in his hands. Smith realizes he is defeated by length and humbly pats it back

15.3 - Gurkeerat Singh to Smith, FOUR, nah this is not working. Not many revolutions imparted and there is no dip. As a result, it's landing too full. Easy work for Smith. Drills it through the cover-point region. Actually it should have been an easy stop for Rohit there. But he dives on top of it

15.2 - Gurkeerat Singh to Smith, no run, well flighted and turning in on middle, worked into the on-side in defence

14.5 - R Dhawan to Smith, no run, similar back of a length delivery, this time slightly wide outside off, softly punched to cover

14.4 - R Dhawan to Smith, no run, skiddy back of a length delivery around off, stays rooted and blocks

14.3 - R Dhawan to Smith, FOUR, was this the plan? To effect a leg-side stumping. Well if it was, it's gone horribly wrong. Dhawan slips one down leg, Smith manages to get a faint tickle on his glance and sends it very fine

Dhoni comes up to the stumps now..

14.2 - R Dhawan to Smith, no run, fullish and jammed down towards mid-off, there is a slightly unnecessary dive from extra-cover to intercept. Umm, wasted calories nothing more

13.4 - Gurkeerat Singh to Smith, no run, too full, Smith flicks it well but finds short mid-wicket

12.4 - R Dhawan to S Marsh, 2 runs, sliced over backward point. Aims an expansive cover-drive but is completely foxed by the slower ball, too early into the stroke. Ends up holding his bat out there and spoons it over the infield down towards third man

12.2 - R Dhawan to S Marsh, no run, fullish and asking for a loose drive. Marsh exercises caution and leaves

11.4 - U Yadav to Smith, 3 runs, oh clumsy. Sran at third man dives unelegantly, fails to collect cleanly and allows an extra run. Short of length delivery glided nicely wide of third man, the batsmen spot the opportunity and make good

11.3 - U Yadav to Smith, 2 runs, length delivery floated up outside off, Smith plonks his foot across and drives it on the up through the cover region. Easy jog back for a couple before sweeper cover tidies up

11.2 - U Yadav to S Marsh, 1 run, hitting the bat hard is Yadav. He is in one of his better spells. Hurries Marsh on the pull, mistimed off the splice through square leg
