Australia have put pace spearhead Josh Hazlewood on ice for the remainder of the home international season.

Cricket Australia said Hazlewood would not be sighted again to ensure he is fresh for next month's tour of New Zealand.

Hazlewood played all six Tests this summer and the opening ODI against India in Perth before receiving a well earned rest ahead of Friday night's seven-wicket Gabba win.

CA decided to extend his break ahead of Sunday's third ODI in Melbourne.

As a result, fast-bowling allrounder John Hastings has been retained in Australia's squad for the third ODI after filling in for the rested Mitch Marsh in Brisbane.

Josh has played all six Tests this summer and has had a high workload.

- Australian coach Darren Lehmann said.

"On that basis the decision has been made to give him a break to allow him to recharge both physically and mentally ahead of the tour of New Zealand.

"We regard it as sensible management of the player and it is an approach that we have adopted successfully in Australian cricket over a significant period of time, especially in the one-day format."

The Australian squad for the final two matches of the five-match ODI series against India will be announced after the Melbourne clash.
