AB de Villiers opts out of New Zealand series

South African cricketer AB de Villiers has made himself unavailable for selection for South Africa’s Test series against New Zealand.

Although he has recovered from his elbow injury, he does not want to be in contention for the Test squad.

After speculations that he was going to retire from Test cricket, he refuted all such rumors.

When asked when AB would return to the Test squad, he said,

That's a good question. Not yet. I'm not there yet. The reason being that I just need to settle things in my head. Over the last few years something has come to mind, which is the fact that we haven't won a World Cup yet. And for me to make it to the 2019 World Cup, I can't really be serious in every format.

He further said that he will be available for the ODIs and he does have plans to return to Test cricket in the future.

AB has not played a Test since January 2016. While being a stand-in captain for Hashim Amla, he was named permanent Test captain at the end of the series against England.

An elbow injury during the Caribbean Premier League ruled him out of playing cricket for a long time. De Villiers stepped down as Test captain in December and Faf Du Plessis was confirmed as his successor.
