Sri Lanka are huddling, rather compulsively. There's enough crowd in to reverberate Kotla with "AB, AB". Watch out for that moment! Breaths away..Jayasuriya has the ball

Welcome back! Out come the Protea openers to earn the two points ... err ... take some pride home. 120-all out looks like a below par score but Indian pitches have stunned us again and again this T20 WC. Unpredictable. Don't assume an easy chase. The new ball zooted onto the bat but the older ball obliged for the cutters and the tweaked deliveries.

Behardien: "A pitch for my style. I bowled some leg-cutters and off-cutters and it proved vital. I think it is tough for both sides to prepare for such a game. But you want to go home with a win. We did well to restrict them and now have to chase it down. We would like to get a win tonight and give something to cheer for our supporters."

The introduction of spinners helped the Proteas to get back into the contest as they stemmed the run-flow as well as picking up wickets. Tahir conjured a probing spell of wrist spin. Even the part-timer Behardien joined the party by snaring up a couple of wickets including Dilshan. Steyn returned in his second spell to send back Perera. None of the Sri Lankan batsmen applied themselves and lost 10 wickets for 75 runs. Mathews's absence made it even more innocuous as they continued losing a flurry of wickets. Some late hitting by Shanaka pushed them to 120. The result here will have no impact on the tournament but it will definitely impact the morale of both teams as they would be looking to regain some lost pride. Join us for the chase in a while.

Sri Lankan openers chose the last Super 10 game, which happened to be a dead-rubber, to come out all guns blazing. But as they say 'better late than never!' Of course, the South African quickies erred in line and the wicket looked good initially which helped their cause. When both openers were set, Phangiso triggered a collapse picking up Chandimal and Thirimanne in successive deliveries.

19.3 - Kyle Abbott to Lakmal, out Lakmal Run Out!! Just one look from the TV umpire and he was sure. Shanaka wanted the strike and called for a risky single, but Lakmal is caught short by Wiese's brilliance. The slower delivery from Abbott, Lakmal ekes out an inside edge onto pad and the ball rolls towards point. Shanaka was haring across, but Wiese went to the right end - bowler's end and hits the bulls-eye. Lakmal was not even in the frame. Lakmal run out (Wiese) 0(1)

Third umpire called in for a run-out check. Lakmal seems to be short. Yes, he is. OUT!

Suranga Lakmal, right handed bat, comes to the crease

19.2 - Kyle Abbott to Jeffrey Vandersay, out Bowled!! Too fast, too quick for the No. 10. Umpire Ravi runs up to the batsman and tells him to wait as he checks for a front foot no-ball. Abbott has something behind the line and Vandersay gets his orders. Good length delivery nips back in slightly, Vandersay was looking to steer it to third man, gets an inside edge onto the middle stump. Jeffrey Vandersay b Kyle Abbott 3(7)

18.6 - Steyn to Jeffrey Vandersay, no run, quick short delivery, Vandersay swivels to pull, gets it high on the bat and the ball drops in no man's land. de Kock tried to get there, but was too far for him. Much better outing for Steyn compared to the England game, finishes with: 4-0-33-1

18.5 - Steyn to Dasun Shanaka, 1 run, short of length and cramping the batsman for room, Shanaka is hurried on the pull, mistimes it to long-on

18.4 - Steyn to Dasun Shanaka, no run, banged in halfway down, Shanaka arches back to play the ramp, is nowhere close to the ball

18.3 - Steyn to Dasun Shanaka, FOUR, that is a horror delivery. Might have been the yorker that went wrong. Leg-stump full toss, Shanaka stoops low and helps it behind square on the leg-side, sped across the turf

18.2 - Steyn to Jeffrey Vandersay, 1 run, on a length and just outside off, steered away to third man

18.1 - Steyn to Jeffrey Vandersay, no run, Steyn went up for caught and bowled. Ravi was going towards the square leg umpire, but Steyn knew it was a bump ball. Yorker fired in on middle, Vandersay squeezes it back to Steyn, went on the bounce. Steyn at first thought it came off the boot and hence appealed

17.5 - Kyle Abbott to Dasun Shanaka, 1 run, slower delivery on back of a length, Shanaka nudges it to the unmanned mid-wicket region

17.5 - Kyle Abbott to Dasun Shanaka, wide, sprays the yorker outside off, well away from the tramline

17.4 - Kyle Abbott to Jeffrey Vandersay, 1 run, cross seam delivery that almost scooted through, Vandersay was on the hop, brings his bat down and gets a toe-end towards square leg. It was on off-stump

17.3 - Kyle Abbott to Jeffrey Vandersay, no run, too quick for Vandersay. Short of a length and outside off, Vandersay is late on the steer to third man

A slip in place..

Jeffrey Vandersay, right handed bat, comes to the crease

17.2 - Kyle Abbott to Herath, out Caught by de Kock!! What happened there? Abbott didn't even appeal or celebrate. de Kock threw the ball and Herath got the marching orders. Fullish and around off, Herath gets an outside edge on the drive, good low grab by QdK. Can Sri Lanka bat out their overs? Herath c de Kock b Kyle Abbott 2(5)

16.3 - Behardien to Dasun Shanaka, 1 run, good length ball on off, Shanaka dabs it to the right of point, hurries across to the other end

16.2 - Behardien to Dasun Shanaka, SIX, Behardien gets the length wrong on this leg-cutter, pitches it up and pays the price, Shanaka gets under that and smokes it over the bowler, just manages to clear the rope. Sri Lanka need plenty more of this

T Perera 8(7) Dasun Shanaka 2(4) Steyn 3-0-27-1

14.6 - Steyn to T Perera, out Caught by Behardien!! Horrible delivery and Steyn gets a wicket. Perera can't believe he has hit that straight to the fielder. Keeps his bat close to his helmet and looks disappointed. And remember this was the extra delivery. Ravi gave a wide even though the ball went off the thigh pad. Short and outside off, Perera stays leg-side of the ball and slaps it to extra cover, Behardien doesn't drop those. Sri Lanka are falling apart. First wicket for Steyn in the competition. Pumps his fists and gets a big roar. T Perera c Behardien b Steyn 8(7) [4s-1]

Steyn to T Perera, THAT'S OUT!! Caught!!

14.5 - Steyn to Dasun Shanaka, 1 run, on a length and around off, Shanaka opens the bat face and guides it to third man

14.1 - Steyn to T Perera, FOUR, greeted with a fantastic hit. The off-cutter right in the slot for Perera, who spots it early and smashes it over his partner, one bounce and over the rope

13.2 - Tahir to Kapugedera, out Bowled!! That's too good. And Tahir is off on his celebratory run. Love his celebration. Whatever the match or the situation, he doesn't forget to entertain us with his wicket celebrations. The googly and Kapugedera had no clue about it, played for the leggie, the ball spun back in and went through the gate, huge gap between bat and pad and the off-stump takes a beating. Kapugedera looks bamboozled. Kapugedera b Tahir 4(7)

Tahir to Kapugedera, THAT'S OUT!! Bowled!!

Thisara Perera, left handed bat, comes to the crease

12.5 - Behardien to Dilshan, out Lbw!! This time the finger is up. The reverse sweep didn't work and hence Dilshan went for the conventional sweep/paddle. Behardien generally bowls wicket-to-wicket. Kept it full and on the stumps, Dilshan missed and he was struck in line with middle, an easier call for Ravi and Sri Lanka keep sliding. From 45/0 they have slipped to 85/5. Dilshan lbw b Behardien 36(40) [4s-4 6s-1]

Behardien to Dilshan, THAT'S OUT!! Lbw!!

12.4 - Behardien to Dilshan, no run, huge shout for LBW. Umpire Ravi does not agree. Dilshan misses the reverse sweep and is struck on the back thigh. Was low but the ball was sliding down leg. Good call from Ravi, he got it spot on

12.1 - Behardien to Kapugedera, 1 run, leg-cutter on the stumps, flicked away to the left of short fine leg, Abbott keeps it to a single

Over: 12 0 0 0 1 1 0 SL 82/4

11.6 - Phangiso to Dilshan, no run, tossed up on off, Dilshan drops it in front of cover and wanted the run, sent back in the nick of time as Faf pounced on it and under-armed the ball to de Kock. Dilshan is back though. End of Phangiso's spell, after taking a pasting off the first two deliveries, he ends with: 4-0-26-2

10.4 - Behardien to Kapugedera, 1 run, leg-cutter on a shortish length, Kapugedera gets inside the line and turns it to square leg

Chamara Kapugedera, right handed bat, comes to the crease

10.3 - Behardien to Jayasuriya, out Caught by du Plessis!! That's a tame dismissal. Jayasuriya has a look at the pitch before trudging off. The slower delivery that held up in the wicket, Jayasuriya was going for the front foot push, checked his shot and spooned a dolly to Faf at cover. The South Africans are delighted and why wouldn't they be. After a solid start from Sri Lanka, they have pulled things back. Jayasuriya c du Plessis b Behardien 1(3)

9.4 - Phangiso to Dilshan, no run, fraction short and around off, Dilshan makes room and cuts it to backward point, a slight fumble from Amla and Dilshan wanted the run. Sent back as Steyn swooped in from short third man. Good call from Jayasuriya

9.3 - Phangiso to Jayasuriya, 1 run, glanced a leg-stump delivery to backward square leg, off the mark with a single

Shehan Jayasuriya, left handed bat, comes to the crease

9.2 - Phangiso to Siriwardana, out Siriwardana Run Out!! Needless from Siriwardana. There was never a run. And you don't run when the ball is close to AB or Faf. They are the best in the world. Tucks the flatter delivery in front of mid-wicket and sets off, Dilshan was going nowhere, he sends his partner back but it was too late, Siriwardana was more than halfway down and Faf had to get his throw right to de Kock, he did and the keeper did the rest. Replays suggest that Dilshan had taken a couple of yards, but being the non-striker he was just backing up. Siriwardana run out (du Plessis/de Kock) 15(10) [4s-2]

Phangiso to Siriwardana, THAT'S OUT!! Run Out!!

9.1 - Phangiso to Siriwardana, FOUR, Miller almost pulled off a stunning save. Flighted on the stumps, Siriwardana lofts it towards long-on, Miller got across and tried to flick it in using his right hand, but in vain

Slider down leg, Dilshan can't meet with the glance, the ball brushed the thigh pad on the way to de Kock. That was the sound and umpire Ravi doesn't call it a wide

8.5 - Tahir to Siriwardana, 1 run, flatter and outside off, punched off the back foot to sweeper cover

8.4 - Tahir to Dilshan, 1 run, tossed up on the stumps, worked away to deep mid-wicket

8.3 - Tahir to Dilshan, no run, googly and Dilshan didn't pick it, he was winding up for the slog sweep, the ball turned in and almost shaved the off-pole

8.2 - Tahir to Dilshan, FOUR, Dilshan takes full toll of it. Darted in full and on the stumps, Dilshan clears his front leg and swats it towards cow corner, to the left of deep mid-wicket for a one bounce four

Free-hit coming up... Second of the innings...

8.2 - Tahir to Siriwardana, no ball, 1 run, another full toss and this one is high. Over the waist and the square leg umpire calls it a no-ball, was outside off and Siriwardana slashes it to sweeper cover

8.1 - Tahir to Dilshan, 1 run, nice juicy full toss and Dilshan swipes it across the line to deep mid-wicket. Missed out on a freebie. Should have been put into the crowd

7.3 - Wiese to Dilshan, no run, fuller and on off, Dilshan knocks it back down the wicket, Wiese uses his long reach to stop the ball, stretches his right hand and stops

7.2 - Wiese to Siriwardana, 1 run, fullish and slanted across Siriwardana, who attempts an on the up drive and gets a thickish outside edge to third man

7.1 - Wiese to Siriwardana, FOUR, bad delivery from Wiese. Loosener first up. Short and rose only till the hip, Siriwardana went on one leg and short-arm jabbed the pull behind square leg, raced away to the fence

6.3 - Phangiso to Siriwardana, 1 run, tossed up on off, Siriwardana drives it to long-on

6.1 - Phangiso to Siriwardana, 1 run, flighted outside off, Siriwardana opens the bat face and eases it square on the off-side. Nobody was excited with the hat-trick ball, surely they didn't know as it came off the last two balls of Phangiso's previous over

End of the powerplay and it is South Africa who have the advantage. The last 10 deliveries, they have given away only 3 runs and picked up 2 wickets. Here is Phangiso with the hat-trick ball. No close-in catchers. Does he know he is on a hat-trick?

Looks at the bowler and then the pitch before walking back to the dugout. Tossed up just outside off, Thirimanne was pushing away from the body, the ball spun sharply and went past the gap between bat and pad. The leg-stump is uprooted and South Africa are back in it. 2.5 - Steyn to Chandimal, FOUR, that's been clubbed. Charges Steyn, converts it into a length delivery and muscles it over mid-on. ABD could only watch the ball sail over him. Steyn isn't going to like this

2.4 - Steyn to Chandimal, SIX, Steyn shakes his head. Short square boundaries and Chandimal has got six. Dug in short and Chandimal was hurried on the pull, goes through with the shot and sends it just over the deep square leg fielder. Longer boundaries would have brought that fielder into play

2.3 - Steyn to Chandimal, no run, fullish and around off, Chandimal drives on the up and straight to mid-off

2.2 - Steyn to Dilshan, leg byes, 1 run, drifts one onto the pads, Dilshan fails to lay bat on the flick, goes off the pad to square leg

2.1 - Steyn to Dilshan, FOUR, what a way to get off the mark. Steyn just watches and turns back to walk to his run-up. Length delivery on off and middle, Dilshan kneels down and laps it fine, beat short fine comfortably

1.6 - Kyle Abbott to Chandimal, byes, FOUR, that just took off. Beat everyone. Banged in halfway down, Chandimal attempts a pull, but is beaten on the top-edge and the ball flies over the leaping de Kock, who had no chance

1.5 - Kyle Abbott to Chandimal, no run, pitched up just outside off, Chandimal drives and picks out Faf at mid-off

1.4 - Kyle Abbott to Chandimal, 2 runs, too straight, on middle and leg, Chandimal tucks it behind square, fielder from deep square leg gets across and keeps it to a brace

1.3 - Kyle Abbott to Chandimal, no run, full and teasing the batsman outside off, Chandimal's eyes lit up seeing the line and length, went for the booming drive on the up and is beaten. Not much of movement, but Chandimal's feet went nowhere

1.2 - Kyle Abbott to Dilshan, leg byes, 1 run, strays onto the legs, Dilshan fails to meet with the glance, ball thuds into the pad and dribbles behind square on the leg-side

1.1 - Kyle Abbott to Chandimal, 1 run, good delivery. Right up in the blockhole, Chandimal had cleared his front leg to get a free swing of the arms, can't get underneath that and digs the drive out to mid-off, quick single taken

Free-hit coming up...

1.1 - Kyle Abbott to Chandimal, no ball, umpire Tucker has his hand stretched sideways. Abbott has overstepped. By a long margin. Pitched up on off, Chandimal drives it back to the bowler, Abbott fields in his followthrough

0.6 - Steyn to Chandimal, 1 run, same line and length as the previous delivery, Chandimal this time finds the fielder at deep square leg, went on the bounce to Miller. Steyn got away with one there

0.5 - Steyn to Chandimal, FOUR, poor delivery. Gets a bit too greedy. Offers a half volley on the pads, Chandimal doesn't miss out, flicks it over short fine and opens his account with a boundary

0.4 - Steyn to Chandimal, no run, back of a length outside off, Chandimal blocks it to the left of the bowler, Steyn gets across

0.3 - Steyn to Chandimal, no run, beauty! This is the Steyn we all know. Good length ball and curling away outside off, Chandimal is drawn into the defensive push away from the body and is beaten all ends up

0.2 - Steyn to Chandimal, no run, slightly drags the length back and hits the splice of Chandimal's bat. He didn't come forward to defend, just kept his bat forward as a line of defence

Amla in at slip...

0.1 - Steyn to Chandimal, no run, looks for the jaffa first up. Lands the length delivery on leg-stump and gets it to straighten, Chandimal is rooted to the crease, brings his bat forward and stabs it to the on-side. Came more off the inside half of the bat

Chandimal and Dilshan are at the crease. Chandimal is on strike. Steyn will open the attack

A flight awaits to parry South Africa and Sri Lanka. It's a premature end for them, more so for South Africa who remain the forever bridesmaid in events. Looked customarily in form building to this WC but then managed to flush all the T20 League experience into the drains, underwhelmed and crashed out. Sri Lanka never inspired because their building phase has mutated into perennial. Managed to stay above Afghanistan in the points table, but only just. That's it from tonight. Keep checking this space as the T20 WC caravan wheels on. Cheers and good night from Pratyush Sinha, my co-commentator Akshay Maanay and our very tall scorer Krishna. Ta-ta!

du Plessis: "I'm very baffled. 230 odd in that first game, yes we didn't bowl well but you think and say what do you need to do. Afghanistan was a dangerous team and we needed to beat them. Against West Indies, we fought well, but to lose from there, it feels like one of those nightmares where you are struggling to put on your pads and you can't walk to the wicket. Unfortunately, we played our best game when we were out of the tournament. Definitely (when asked if "small errors" cost them). We should have won that first game. That game vs. England, you play it ten times and lose only once. We fought hard in that West Indies game. In T20s, especially, if you are not on top of your game, you aren't going to win. I picked up a few grey hairs and in four years time, I hope the body is strong enough (for the 2020 T20 WC). It's South Africa and it's every thing for us. We are a team that wants to win a WC."

Chandimal: "You can't tell every time that you're rebuilding. Someone has to put their hand up. We got a good start but the wickets fell and there was no one to rebuild. Batting let us down whole tournament. It's always tough to play against South Africa; they're a very good side. We couldn't execute well in the middle and that's why we lost. My appearance (in the T20 WC in 2020) depends more on my performance; I am only 26 (laughs)."

"Been a great pitch. The ball was stopping and turning, and you can't ask better than that. The campaign has been tough. We prepared well and the luck wasn't on our side. We tried to make South Africa proud and we'll continue to do so. It was tough to prepare for a dead rubber but we are doing a job for our country. It's always good to play here in India because the South African wickets don't aid spin," reckons Aaron Phangiso whose figures of 2/26 fetched him the Man of the Match award

So, a comprehensive victory for the Proteas. Sri Lanka have been annihilated. They have too many issues to sort out. South Africa began their chase in style. de Kock came out firing all cylinders unleashing himself with a couple of boundaries in the first over before throwing his wicket away hastily looking for a run. After the early dismissal, the Sri Lankan bowlers were expected to come hard, but Amla and du Plessis did not let the bowlers to settle. The pair batted sensibly, used their feet well against the spinners and kept the scorecard ticking with ones and twos. Chants of "AB, AB" from the crowd beckoned finally when Faf was adjudged LBW. But replays showed he played it with the bat. Amla struck a well-measured fifty. AB applied the finishing touches to help South Africa head home with a consolation win under their belt.

17.4 - Lakmal to de Villiers, SIX, there's the win. There's de Villiers's six. There's your money's worth, Kotla! An easy win by 8 wickets. Gets a full toss, gets under it and swings it with bent knees over deep mid-wicket. A demolishing win for South Africa but a game too late..

17.3 - Lakmal to Amla, 1 run, almost a yorker length. We saw these Kohli-driven through point yesterday. Amla goes more close-batted and squeezes it out to deep cover

17.2 - Lakmal to Amla, no run, slows it down with a finger-roll from a length and Amla played it early. Had the right intention with an open bat but that was a good ball

17.1 - Lakmal to de Villiers, leg byes, 1 run, lovely comeback. Gets the yorker to tail in quick and raps de Villiers's back boot that was plonked on leg-stump. Would have gone down

17.1 - Lakmal to de Villiers, wide, not this time. Was making room and Lakmal must have panicked. Hurls it wider down leg-side to evade de Villiers's brutal slog over fine leg. Because a wide is better than a deflating de Villiers six

16.5 - Dasun Shanaka to Amla, FOUR, slower ball alright but it was deliberately wide. What does Amla do? Reaches out, uses those wrists to generate all the horsepower and cannons the sliced cut wide of backward point

16.4 - Dasun Shanaka to de Villiers, 1 run, was walking towards the bowler and then adjusts as he chops it back to long-on all cramped

16.3 - Dasun Shanaka to de Villiers, SIX, that ball was slower than erosion. Slower than evolution. Had his knee bent and then bent it further to connect the pull. Had done well to wait and wait before unleashing the ball pancake-flat over deep mid-wicket

15.2 - T Perera to Amla, 1 run, robs pace on this, Amla waits and then dabs it late to third man

13.5 - Siriwardana to Amla, 1 run, chops it long-off but he wanted to go much squarer with the cut. Not enough room

13.4 - Siriwardana to de Villiers, 1 run, slows it down but the dragged down length gives de Villiers the time to generate his own pace on this sweep-pull round the corner

12.6 - Lakmal to du Plessis, out Lbw!! "AB, AB" is the only moment that I could collect from that delivery. Kotla is buzzing! And this looked like a horror decision. Absolutely poor. du Plessis was shaping for the Dilscoop but was a tad late on that, the ball dipped in and rapped du Plessis's inside edge that ricocheted onto the pad...and he's been given LBW. 1.2 - Lakmal to de Kock, 1 run, that was barreled, believe me. Short and wide, de Kock thrashed the cut but a diving stop at cover played the devil. Siriwardene's wrists are intact..

1.1 - Lakmal to Amla, 1 run, full on the pads to start, Amla shaves it off his pads and ekes out a single to deep backward square leg

A slip for Lakmal too..

Suranga Lakmal, right-arm medium, comes into the attack

Over: 1 1 4 4 0 0 0 RSA 9/0
de Kock 8(5) Amla 1(1) Jayasuriya 1-0-9-0

0.6 - Jayasuriya to de Kock, no run, this was slower and flatter, de Kock erred in staying back. Thankfully connects the cut right in front of the off-stump and barrels it to backward point

0.5 - Jayasuriya to de Kock, no run, fired on the pads, arrived quicker than de Kock expected and he turns it into the leg-side in time

0.4 - Jayasuriya to de Kock, no run, round-armish and hurled in full on middle, de Kock jams it out as he backed away

0.3 - Jayasuriya to de Kock, FOUR, gives this some air outside off, the ball rips away a touch and the squeezed out drive evades a flat-footed slip to scoot to the third man fence

One slip for the left hander..

0.2 - Jayasuriya to de Kock, FOUR, off-side is his playground. Fired in flat outside off, slides on and de Kock leaned into a drive that shaves the covers

0.1 - Jayasuriya to Amla, 1 run, floats it on leg-stump from round the wicket, Amla hurries into his flick towards cow corner and gets off the mark

Amla and de Kock are at the crease. Amla is on strike. Jayasuriya will open the attack
