Hello again! We're back, so are the players. No Alex Hales - So, the makeshift opener is Moeen Ali. Lakmal to get us under way with a slip in place. Roy to have the first crack...

After inserting the opposition, England struck early by dismissing Kusal Perera courtesy a brilliant run out from Jonny Bairstow. Gunathilaka then found an able ally in Kusal Mendis to engineer a 100-plus stand for the 2nd wicket before rain interrupted play. After 2 hours of waiting, the game resumed and so did Sri Lanka's aggro approach. The duo, however, departed in quick succession as Rashid rediscovered his rhythm. Despite the unfriendly conditions, the leggie bowled with a lot of guile and character. Thereafter, Chandimal came in, nudged and nurdled before unleashing along with the skip. Mathews exploded late but yet those flurry of strokes proved to be effective in Sri Lanka posting a substantial total. Up to the Englishmen to swing their willows, be back in 10...

Over: 42 Wd 1 1 4 1 1 1 SL 305/5
Mathews 67(54) Dasun Shanaka 19(10) Woakes 9-0-65-0

41.6 - Woakes to Mathews, 1 run, Mathews shimmies down and Woakes goes wide outside off, Mathews manages to get some wood on the squeeze and the ball trickles down to third man, only a single. Sri Lanka finish with 305, their highest total in the series.. However, the revised Duckworth Lewis target for England is 308

41.5 - Woakes to Dasun Shanaka, 1 run, Shanaka tries to take a leaf out of his skipper's book, but Woakes has learnt his lesson, gets it right and Shanaka can only manage a single to sweeper cover

41.4 - Woakes to Mathews, 1 run, this time hangs back in the crease and Woakes nails the yorker, dug out to sweeper cover

41.3 - Woakes to Mathews, FOUR, that is excellent batting. Woakes became predictable. Mathews knew the yorker was coming up, he danced down the wicket, took it on the full and smashed the drive to the deep extra cover fence, rocketed away to the fence

41.2 - Woakes to Dasun Shanaka, 1 run, another perfect yorker from Woakes, Shanaka drills the drive to long-off. Singles won't hurt England

41.1 - Woakes to Mathews, 1 run, wide yorker and Mathews squeezes it to backward point, only a single

41.1 - Woakes to Mathews, wide, that is a harsh call. It seemed to be inside the tramline outside off, Mathews let it pass, Buttler and Woakes are not happy with the decision. It was a marginal call and it went with the batsman

Over: 41 1 1 4 4 4 1 SL 295/5
Mathews 60(50) Dasun Shanaka 17(8) Plunkett 8-0-65-0

40.6 - Plunkett to Mathews, 1 run, short of length around off, steered away to third man, retains strike for the last over

40.5 - Plunkett to Mathews, FOUR, hat-trick of fours. Full and Plunkett misses the yorker length, Mathews walks across and flicks it in front of square. Plenty of bottom hand behind that shot and he placed it to perfection

40.4 - Plunkett to Mathews, FOUR, cheeky from Mathews, shuffles across to the back of a length delivery, gets inside the line and uses Plunkett's pace to scoop it over short fine. Almost went the distance

40.3 - Plunkett to Mathews, FOUR, Mathews brings up his fifty. Another captain's innings from him. Came in when his side had lost two quick wickets and rebuild the innings with Chandimal. Shimmies down and almost yorks himself, but got enough power to drill the drive straight down the ground, beat long-on's dive

40.2 - Plunkett to Dasun Shanaka, 1 run, short and on off, Shanaka stays back and nails the pull to deep square leg, went on the bounce to the fielder

40.1 - Plunkett to Mathews, 1 run, goes wide of the crease and hurls it on a length, tapped away to backward point. Mathews is happy to give the strike to his junior partner

Mathews 46(45) Dasun Shanaka 16(7) Woakes 8-0-55-0

39.6 - Woakes to Mathews, 1 run, pings the blockhole, Mathews jams it to backward point and has to hurry as Roy flings a throw at the bowler's end

39.5 - Woakes to Dasun Shanaka, 1 run, another full toss, but at a good height, Shanaka slices the loft square of the wicket. Sweeper gets across to prevent the second. He might have missed out there

39.4 - Woakes to Dasun Shanaka, 2 runs, low full toss outside off, Shanaka jams it hard on the surface and places it wide of backward point, hares across for the second

39.3 - Woakes to Dasun Shanaka, no run, gets his line and length right - yorker outside off, Shanaka squeezes it off the bottom edge to Buttler

39.2 - Woakes to Dasun Shanaka, FOUR, good start to the over, consecutive boundaries for Shanaka. Woakes has missed his yorker length and has conceded two fours. This was short and wide, Shanaka jumps up and cuts it over backward point, no need to run for those

39.1 - Woakes to Dasun Shanaka, FOUR, that is very unlucky. Length delivery on middle and leg, Shanaka goes for the mow towards cow corner, gets an inside edge which nutmegs Shanaka and races to the fine leg fence

Over: 39 0 W 4 1 2 2 SL 268/5
Mathews 45(44) Dasun Shanaka 5(2) Willey 8-0-58-2

38.6 - Willey to Mathews, 2 runs, full toss and Mathews was already ready for the scoop, gets it squarer than he would have liked, pushed his partner for the second and got it comfortably in the end

38.5 - Willey to Mathews, 2 runs, full and on the pads, flicked away behind square on the leg-side, placed it well enough to collect a brace

38.4 - Willey to Dasun Shanaka, 1 run, low full toss just outside off, Shanaka toe-ends the drive to extra cover

38.3 - Willey to Dasun Shanaka, FOUR, Willey goes for a back of a length delivery and pays the price. Offered width as well and Shanaka opens his account with a classy cut shot, waits and steers it to the right of backward point. Relied on timing rather than power

Dasun Shanaka, right handed bat, comes to the crease

38.2 - Willey to S Prasanna, out Bowled!! Once again Willey hits the sticks. No fireworks from Prasanna. It was a well-directed yorker from Willey, Prasanna was a tad early into the swipe across the line, he went on one knee and missed it completely. The ball went underneath his bat to hit the middle-stump. Sri Lanka losing a bit of steam towards the end. S Prasanna b Willey 9(8) [4s-1]

Willey to S Prasanna, THAT'S OUT!! Bowled!!

38.1 - Willey to S Prasanna, no run, stifled appeal for LBW. England don't take the review either. Full and on leg-stump, Prasanna misses the with the clip to leg and is struck on the back pad. The ball had pitched outside leg

Over: 38 2 4 0 1 1 1 SL 259/4
S Prasanna 9(6) Mathews 41(42) Woakes 7-0-43-0

37.6 - Woakes to S Prasanna, 1 run, Woakes is hitting that yorker length consistently, Prasanna can't do much other than dig out to extra cover

37.3 - Woakes to S Prasanna, no run, low full toss outside off, Prasanna opens the bat face and slices it to backward point, straight to Roy

37.2 - Woakes to S Prasanna, FOUR, edged and four. Not where he intended but Prasanna won't mind. Fullish and outside off, Prasanna throws everything at it, the outside edge goes fine and beats third man comfortably

37.1 - Woakes to S Prasanna, 2 runs, short and outside off, Prasanna rises up to get on top of it and cuts it square of the wicket, Bairstow has some work to do, moves to his left, dives and saves a couple

Over: 37 1 1 2 W 1 4 SL 250/4
Mathews 40(41) S Prasanna 1(1) Willey 7-0-49-1

36.6 - Willey to Mathews, FOUR, a gimme ball really from Willey. A nice height full toss on leg-stump, Mathews had already made up his mind to play the scoop and Willey made his job easier, done nonchalantly over short fine

36.5 - Willey to S Prasanna, 1 run, might have been the slower ball, Prasanna bunts it to backward point and sets off. Roy fires at the bowler's end and that would have been interesting had it hit

Buttler has gone back for Prasanna..

Seekkuge Prasanna, right handed bat, comes to the crease

36.4 - Willey to Chandimal, out Bowled!! Timbah! A crucial moment in the game. Chandimal had got his eye in and was looking dangerous, but Willey sends him back with a perfect yorker on leg-stump. Chandimal moved too far across to play the paddle over short fine, in the end he got nothing on the ball as it clattered into the base of leg-stump. Sri Lanka would have wanted him to be there till the end. Chandimal b Willey 63(51) [4s-1 6s-3]

Willey to Chandimal, THAT'S OUT!! Bowled!!

36.3 - Willey to Chandimal, 2 runs, full on middle and leg, whipped to deep mid-wicket. Bairstow loses control of the ball while he was going to throw and that allows the pair to come back for the second

36.2 - Willey to Mathews, 1 run, full and targeting the stumps, flicked away to deep mid-wicket

36.1 - Willey to Chandimal, 1 run, Chandimal shuffles across to scoop it over short fine, gets it high on the bat and the ball balloons towards backward square

David Willey [6.0-0-40-0] is back into the attack

Change of ends for Willey and Buttler is up to the stumps...

35.6 - Woakes to Chandimal, 1 run, fuller and outside off, Chandimal mistimes the loft to long-off, couple of bounces and reaches the fielder

35.6 - Woakes to Chandimal, wide, gets the radar wrong on this yorker length, Chandimal lets it pass and some excerise in the cold weather for umpire Rob Bailey

35.5 - Woakes to Mathews, 1 run, low full toss well outside off, Mathews was backing away, does well to reach it and ease it to sweeper cover

35.4 - Woakes to Chandimal, 1 run, wide yorker outside off, Chandimal reaches out and squeezes it to Morgan at extra cover

35.3 - Woakes to Chandimal, no run, Chandimal has a swing at a length delivery outside off, can only connect with thin air. He wanted to send it out of the park, went too hard and lost his shape

35.1 - Woakes to Chandimal, 1 run, nice looking shot for only a single. Length delivery outside off, Chandimal sinks to one knee and lofts the drive up and over extra cover, goes straight to deep extra cover

34.3 - Plunkett to Chandimal, 1 run, very full and on the stumps, Chandimal flicks it to deep backward square leg

34.2 - Plunkett to Chandimal, SIX, Chandimal brings up his fifty with a fine shot. His teammates are up on their feet. He acknowledges it with the raise of the bat. They need him to keep going. Short and outside off, Chandimal hops and ramps it over third man. The pace of Plunkett meant it went all the way

34.1 - Plunkett to Mathews, 1 run, short and hurried Mathews, he tries to fend and the top-edge flies to deep backward square, fortunately lands well short of the incoming fielder

Umpire Bruce Oxenford signals for the third powerplay. England can have five fielders outside the 30-yard circle..

33.5 - Willey to Chandimal, 2 runs, pitches it up outside off, driven in front of square on the off-side. Bairstow sprints across from sweeper, slides and keeps it down to a brace

33.4 - Willey to Mathews, 1 run, full and straight from Willey, whipped with a lot of bottom hand to the right of long-on. Root keeps it to a single. Mathews not happy as he thought Chandimal should have come back

33.2 - Willey to Chandimal, 1 run, full and attacking the stumps, flicked away to deep square leg

32.6 - Plunkett to Mathews, no run, shortish and just outside off, Mathews toe-ends the pull to mid-on

31.5 - Willey to Chandimal, 1 run, pitched up outside off, drilled down to long-off

31.4 - Willey to Mathews, 1 run, bit sloppy from Roy. Willey misses the yorker and dishes out a full toss, Mathews is surprised and can only bunt it to backward point. Roy sends a wild throw, which Buttler nor mid-wicket can get across to stop

31.3 - Willey to Chandimal, 1 run, too full and almost in that yorker length, Chandimal squeezes it to extra cover. Morgan parries it away after diving to his right

31.2 - Willey to Mathews, 1 run, Mathews keeps walking in the crease before getting in line and driving it to sweeper cover

31.2 - Willey to Mathews, wide, with fine leg inside the ring, Mathews goes for the scoop, Willey darts it outside leg and Buttler did well to move across and stop the ball. Saved four there

31.1 - Willey to Mathews, no run, back of a length on leg, Mathews stays leg-side of the ball and pats it in front of cover. Morgan is close and hence there is no chance of a single

30.2 - Plunkett to Chandimal, SIX, that's been smoked. Even Chandimal has a wry smile on his face. He liked the connection on that. Shimmies down to convert it into a length ball and hammered it into the stands at long-on

19.4 - Adil Rashid to Kusal Mendis, out Caught by Plunkett!! A fine knock comes to an end via a terrific catch. The duo had come out with a set plan; that is to attack from the word go. The loopy leggie from Rashid which is well outside off, Mendis went down on one knee to sweep it over mid-wicket, the turn took the ball away from the bat and he hit it towards long-off. Plunkett runs forward, dives full length and latches onto it. Made sure the ball didn't pop out as he hit the ground. Kusal Mendis c Plunkett b Adil Rashid 77(64) [4s-13]

Adil Rashid to Kusal Mendis, THAT'S OUT!! Caught!!

19.3 - Adil Rashid to Kusal Mendis, no run, quicker and on off, Mendis ekes out an inside edge on the forward defensive

19.2 - Adil Rashid to Gunathilaka, 1 run, this time Rashid follows him as he makes room, squeezed out to long-on

19.1 - Adil Rashid to Gunathilaka, FOUR, nice way to greet Rashid. Backs away to the leg-side, opens up his shoulders, goes up and over mid-off. Even though it was a mishit, he got enough to clear the fielder

Hales will not take the field and will only bat if required at No. 7. So, that is not good news for England. He is the man in form and they would have counted on him in a shortened game...

18.5 - Moeen Ali to Kusal Mendis, 1 run, flighted on off, swept away to long leg

18.4 - Moeen Ali to Kusal Mendis, no run, tossed up on off, Mendis drives to the right of Ali, who dives and half stops the ball. He did enough for the mid-wicket fielder to get across

18.3 - Moeen Ali to Gunathilaka, 1 run, slower and turning away, Gunathilaka taps it in front of square on the off-side

18.2 - Moeen Ali to Kusal Mendis, 1 run, flatter and on the stumps, tucked away to mid-wicket

The players are all set to resume. Gunathilaka and Mendis will look to carry on their partnership, while England would have regrouped during the break and will come out with new strategies. Revised playing conditions: two bowlers can bowl 9 overs and three can bowl 8. Hales is still not on the field, he hobbled off after running across to stop a ball near the boundary rope. Moeen Ali to continue...

16:25 Local Time, 15:25 GMT, 20:55 IST: Good news folks! Game to start at 16:30 local. It will be a 43-over contest and the innings break will be only for 10 minutes. So, after over two hours of rain, we have lost just 14 overs in total. There is news coming in that the game is further reduced to 42 overs.

16:08 Local Time, 15:08 GMT, 20:38 IST: Huh! Finally some respite. As mentioned earlier, there's no rain and the groundsmen have decided - It's time to remove the covers. More updates as and when we get it, don't go away...We might start at 16:30 local with a possibility of 40-42 overs per-side game - And all that will be confirmed once the scheduled inspection is done which is at 16:20 local

15:45 Local Time, 14:45 GMT, 20:15 IST: All that I can draw from a bundle load of tweets is that - Firstly, it ain't raining now but, but... The conditions are murky prompting the groundstaff to keep the covers and some of the crowd have started to leave the ground. F-R-U-S-T-R-A-T-I-N-G times. And guess what! M(ahela) J has just tweeted "Still raining"

BBC just tweeted: "Still a bit drizzly, and the outfield is greasy. Umpires will have another look as soon as the rain stops."

15:13 Local Time, 14:13 GMT, 19:43 IST: Sit back, have a cuppa and keep praying. We've reached that point of time where we start losing overs...

14:41 Local Time, 13:41 GMT, 19:11 IST: The drizzle-mizzle continues...As if that wasn't enough, there are some dark, thick clouds hovering around making it look more ominous.

14:19 Local Time, 13:19 GMT, 18:49 IST: The umpires finally had enough. The players are being taken off and the covers are coming on. The big hover cover is sliding over the playing surface. Hopefully, it will stop and we will resume soon. However, remember it has to stop completely for the umpires to bring the players back on the field.

18.1 - Moeen Ali to Kusal Mendis, FOUR, expertly done. Moeen Ali pushes it through as he is not able to grip the ball, Mendis waits and steers it late past short third man, raced away across the wet outfield

17.3 - Adil Rashid to Kusal Mendis, FOUR, an acrobatic dive from Plunkett almost saved four for England. Flighted outside off, Mendis drives it hard and to the left of long-off. Plunkett did all the hard work of getting there, but the dive and momentum of it takes the ball along to the rope

17.2 - Adil Rashid to Gunathilaka, 1 run, worked away with the turn to square leg

17.1 - Adil Rashid to Kusal Mendis, 1 run, top edge and safe. Slider on the stumps, Mendis crouches low to pull, doesn't expect it bounce much and hence gets a fat edge and luckily it lands safely near short fine leg

Time for a drink. After that early hara-kiri (Kusal Perera's run out) it has been classy and flashy from Sri Lanka. Classy courtesy Kusal Mendis' awe-inspiring strokes. Flashy because Gunathilaka has been edgy at times. Running between the wickets has been the only area of concern

So that ends a rain-curtailed game. Mathews is a disappointed captain. The fact that his squad has been plagued by injuries will hurt him even more. A settled side or a fit group of players is what a captain would want all the time when he fights for his country. A tie, an England win, a washout and an England win again. That's how the ODI leg of the series has transpired. These two sides will battle again in the final ODI in Cardiff. Can the visitors finally taste victory? Join us back on Saturday to find out. Let's hope that there's no rain. Until then, goodbye!

Roy: "What a day! Incredible win for the boys. I have put in a lot of hard work and it's nice to see it paid off. I am never going to forget (this knock), just a shame I wasn't there at the end. I was pretty disappointed. I think both the hundreds (in the series) are special. Credit to Sri Lanka for batting well. My legs were tired towards the end with those twos. I am really happy. Huge respect to the boys and to the crowd as well."

Jason Roy is the Man of the Match

Morgan: "Special win. Jason Roy was impressive. He's making the most of his form at the moment. I don't think there was much margin for error, the wicket was very good and credit to the groundstaff for preparing such a surface. This is a very difficult ground to stop scoring once the guy is set. It's quite impressive (with the way we are playing). Hopefully the weather will stay good and we can continue to do well. He's played a magnificent match-winning innings."

Mathews: "Once again we weren't penetrative enough to get wickets. It was a good wicket, but we needed to put a lot of effort to take wickets and unfortunately we didn't do it. We might looking at making a few changes in the next game. We got so many casualities at the moment. We have lost a player every game due to injury."

It all began well for the visitors when Moeen Ali edged Nuwan Pradeep to the keeper, but Joe Root and Roy were involved in a massive 149-run stand that almost put Sri Lanka out of the game. Not only did they score big, but they scored them quicky as well. Despite losing Root, Roy did not curb his game and put England on top. He got to his hundred off 74 balls and continued to play an aggressive brand of cricket. It turned out that he fell 6 runs short of recording the highest ever individual score in ODIs for England.

The players exchange customary handshakes. What a chase this is from England. 308 in 42 overs wasn't easy, but Jason Roy set the tone early with his excellent stroke-play. Despite managing to put up four fifty-plus scores, Sri Lanka end up on the losing side. The batsmen put runs on the board, but the bowlers simply lacked control and could literally do nothing to stop Roy's assault.

40.1 - S Prasanna to Buttler, FOUR, and that is the game. The second highest successful run chase in the history of ODIs for England. Gee, the transformation after the 2015 WC has been brilliant to watch. The entire team is delighted and skipper Morgan is all smiles in the dressing room. Coming back to the delivery, Buttler steps out and sends it over the infield wide of mid-on

39.6 - Pradeep to Buttler, 3 runs, the slower delivery that goes very full, Buttler drills the drive wide of long-off, tests Lakmal near the boundary, but he does well to dive to his left and stop the ball

39.6 - Pradeep to Buttler, wide, another short ball attempted, Buttler lets it go and it's too high according to the square leg umpire. Called a wide

39.5 - Pradeep to Bairstow, 1 run, short ball and Bairstow pulls well along the ground to deep backward square leg, the fielder makes a good tumbling save

39.4 - Pradeep to Bairstow, no run, slower delivery outside off stump, Bairstow swings and gets an under edge that rolls to the keeper

39.3 - Pradeep to Bairstow, FOUR, the idea was right from the bowler to go for the yorker as a follow-up to the bumper, but he didn't get it spot on, allowed Bairstow to get under it and smash it down the ground to the left of mid-on

39.2 - Pradeep to Bairstow, no run, a surprise bouncer from Pradeep and Bairstow wasn't ready for it, played the pull shot and missed

39.1 - Pradeep to Bairstow, leg byes, FOUR, no sir, can't bowl a leg stump line with 16 needed off 18 balls. Bairstow tries to glance it fine, misses and it rolls off the thigh pad to the fine leg boundary

38.6 - Maharoof to Buttler, no run, did that carry? Need a replay. Buttler slashes at this slower delivery and gets a thick outside edge, Pradeep dives forward at short third man, but the ball dropped just in front of him. So not a dropped chance

Maharoof stops in his delivery stride. Buttler was moving around in his crease and seems like Bairstow too wasn't back inside the line.

38.5 - Maharoof to Buttler, FOUR, that's sliced away nicely by Buttler. He backed away and went hard at this full delivery, deliberately played with an angled bat and he placed it to perfection

38.4 - Maharoof to Buttler, 2 runs, makes room and slaps this widish delivery through the covers, Tharanga puts in a sprwaling dive but fumbles and allows a second

38.3 - Maharoof to Buttler, 2 runs, inventive stuff from Buttler. Shuffles across, gets inside the line of the delivery and scoops an off-pace delivery fine. Not much pace on that and hence fine leg get easily cut it off

38.2 - Maharoof to Bairstow, 1 run, slower one again, on and around middle, clipped away behind square

Farveez Maharoof pulls off from his delivery stride and signals a warning to Buttler as he is backing away way too far

37.5 - Pradeep to Jason Roy, out Bowled!! There you go, not offering pace on the ball works for Pradeep, but it's come too late for the visitors. Jason Roy gets a standing ovation as he walks off with his bat raised. The cameras flash their lights as Roy holds his head high after a satisfying knock. The slower delivery (from the back of the hand) on the stumps, Roy backs away slightly and swings across the line, he played a tad early and missed the ball and it crashed into middle and leg. Pradeep to Jason Roy, THAT'S OUT!! Bowled!!

37.4 - Pradeep to Bairstow, 1 run, this is nicely cut away, but Prasanna dives to his right at backward point and gets a hand on it

37.3 - Pradeep to Jason Roy, 1 run, with the big boundary on the on-side, Pradeep wants Roy to manufacture some pace into his shots, another slower delivery on the leg stump, nudged to long-on

37.2 - Pradeep to Jason Roy, 2 runs, and another well run two, slower delivery on the stumps, Roy works it softly towards mid-wicket, calls for two straightaway and also manages to sway away from the line of the throw at the striker's end

36.5 - S Prasanna to Bairstow, 2 runs, that's good running from Jason Roy, mind you he's on 159 and his legs must be tired, but he was quick enough to safely reach home on that second run. Bairstow nudged this into the vacant mid-wicket region, Jason Roy wanted two and they got it

36.4 - S Prasanna to Bairstow, no run, should have been more runs as Prasanna bowls a freebie that is short and wide outside off stump, Bairstow cuts and finds backward point to perfection

36.3 - S Prasanna to Jason Roy, 1 run, flatter and on the leg stump, Roy works it to short fine leg

36.2 - S Prasanna to Bairstow, 1 run, pushed away to deep extra-cover

36.2 - S Prasanna to Bairstow, wide, now that's a dreadful ball, tells the mind of the bowler. After being smashed for four, he's afraid to toss one up and fires this through, but he got the radar wrong

36.1 - S Prasanna to Bairstow, FOUR, Bairstow takes the aggressive route as well. Flighted delivery outside off stump, Bairstow steps out, gets close to the pitch of the ball and inside-out drives it hard over extra-cover, bounced just inside the rope

Maharoof saw the batsman moving across the stumps and followed him aiming for the yorker, went as a low full toss and struck Roy on the right boot as he failed to connect with the flick, ball rolls behind square. I didn't spot any wood on that but the umpire gives that as runs. After completing the run, Jason Roy lets out a big grunt and limps in pain
