Tahir was the third-choice spinner for Amla once again and bowled full tosses and long-hops in his short 2-over spell to show exactly why. Morkel replaced him to everyone's surprise and immediately trapped Vijay bang in front - with the one that nipped away slightly to trap the back leg. Although wicketless, Simon Harmer was impressive and bowled a long spell of threatening deliveries with little-or-no luck. Pujara hasn't looked all that fluent, Kohli's fifth-stump demons were very much on display and the partnership is too raw for India to feel at ease. Runs look difficult to come by on a low spinning track complemented by a slowish outfield but India will look to do an anti-Mohali and build a good first innings total this time around. Lunch, Day 1: Jamtha has perhaps overcompensated for a dreary 2012 by dishing out a track that's dark, dry, wrinkly and already dusty by lunch on day 1. Welcome back... I'm being selfish and looking at my plight when I type this. Great to see South Africa bowling. They won't start with two spinners. Morkel will begin. Gives my fingers breathing space and my heartbeats become normal. Everything seems fine with the world at the very moment. Never seen a Test match before where every ball had so much action happening. I haven't covered a game like that. Today's morning session was manic to say the least. Anyway enough of that. Let's move on. Morkel has the ball. Two slips in place. Vijay on strike

The only batsman who showed fight and application was Duminy and he too survived for a long while on luck. But his intent was good to see and he helped himself to 35 with unorthodox batting. One needs luck and lots of it on this wicket, but there has to be a sound plan and method behind all that. South Africa simply don't have it and I can't see this Test going beyond tea tomorrow - assuming India get bowled out or declare. One final word about Ashwin before I take a break - he has been unbelievable in this series and the tone was set in the opening over of the day to Elgar. From then on, it was just one-way street.

Ashwin has the honor of leading the team off the field. He has the ball in hand and raises it before taking his side in. Ravi Shastri - the team director is a happy man. He is seen clapping. Now coming to the most important part. What do we say of South Africa's innings! Horrendous batting to say the least. The pitch isn't easy to bat on but it is all in the mind brother. It is all in the mind. Even experienced campaigners like Amla and de Villiers tried to do something that they don't normally do. Pre-meditate their shots even before the ball has been bowled. And the less said about du Plessis the better. And nothing can be said about the batting after that. Batsmen came, slogged and tried their best but there was never any chance against Ashwin and Co. on this wicket.

Duminy and du Plessis resisted for a while before the latter had a brainfade and gave it away. Vilas came in and got out soon. That made it 7 wickets down and the only man who has shown some intent has been Duminy. He has used his feet to the spinners and tried his best to unsettle them. His tactics has paid off to an extent and he has helped himself to some runs as well. South Africa needed those runs for they were reeling. Ashwin and Jadeja have bowled unchanged today and every ball is an event. Never seen so much action happening in a Test match before in India. That's what this pitch was set out to provide and so far it has done. But spare a thought for folks like me. My fingers are taking a pounding! The drinks are done and we are ready for more...

It all started early on in the day. The pacers were taken off after the new ball offered absolutely zip. And Harmer, Elgar started making things happen. Despite all this, Vijay was in a zone of his own. But by now, Morkel also had found some reverse-swing going. Bowled a corker of a spell aided by some loose strokeplay from the Indian batsmen to strike 3 big blows. India's lower order rallied courtesy a counter-attacking Jadeja and a steady Saha. Tahir is being congratulated by every player of the South African team. So then, considering this pitch, one would have to say that India have made a very good second innings score. So the target for the Proteas will be 310. That will take some chasing on this rank turner. Amla did not turn to Tahir for 24 overs of the innings, but the leggie reminded his captain that he should have been introduced much earlier by picking up wickets at will. In fact, he picked up 3 wickets inside 4 overs of his spell to derail India's innings. The hosts were actually well placed at 97/2, but Tahir's introduction got South Africa back into the contest. Dhawan, Pujara and Rohit made substantial scores. Tahir's second Test fifer was the highlight for the visitors, while Morkel too bowled well for three wickets.

It wasn't all one-way traffic though. Murali Vijay fell very early to the impressive Morne Morkel and Pujara was dismissed, just when he looked set for a big score. On the other hand, Shikhar Dhawan rode his luck to conjure up a score, before throwing it all away with a rank poor shot. If India's aggressive batting was a positive, Hashim Amla's decision to keep Imran Tahir away from the attack was equally perplexing. The wily leg-spinner, who was finally introduced in the 25th over turned out to be South Africa's best bowler, scalping Dhawan, Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane, but the damage had already been done by then.

After all the talk about the pitch, for a change, it was a session that the Indian batsmen dominated. They did lose five wickets, but they also added 101 runs - massive, when taking into account, things that have gone by so far. The ball did play tricks, but South Africa's spinners were generally poor. Sample this, Duminy's first two overs had a cracking delivery which castled Cheteshwar Pujara, but it also included 5 long-hops, which were duly punished by the batsmen. On a wicket that was termed unplayable, the visitors allowed the Indian batsmen at gallop at 4 RPO.
