Pakistan got off to a bright start and ensured that they didn't lose any wickets in the first 15 overs. Both openers played with purpose and punished the loose balls from the Sri Lankan bowlers. Mathews: 'Pretty disappointed with the way it went for us. They probably outplayed us in all three facets of the game. It turned a lot more in the second innings as well. We need to improve a lot more in all three departments. We need to beat them in the next game to stay alive in the series. The wicket was a batting paradise in the first half. The bowlers couldn't have done much, we thought they will post around 350, but we kept them down to 316. We need to beat them in the next game, but you can't make too many changes either.'
Earlier in the day, the Pakistani batters took the sails out of the Sri Lankan bowlers, showing some brilliant strokeplay. They showed intent right from the start, with Shehzad and Ali putting on 93 for the first wicket. Even though Azhar Ali missed out on his fifty by a solitary run, Hafeez and Sarfraz batted aggressively and registered their fifties. Sarfraz was looking good for a hundred but ran himself out on 77, while attempting a second run. Towards the end, the duo of Malik and Rizwan hit some lusty blows and took Pakistan to 316.
Thirimanne batted well for his fifty, but kept running out of a partner at the other end, with Tharanga, Mathews and Chandimal, failing to produce anything substantital with the bat. Thirimanne too got out soon after reaching his fifty, guiding a slower ball straight to Sarfraz. The lower-order didn't hang around for much longer and Sri Lanka were eventually bowled out for 181, giving Pakistan the win by 135 runs. Yasir Shah was the pick of the bowler, taking 4/29 in his 10 overs.
It was an all-round performance from Pakistan. After an aggressive fifth wicket partnership between Malik and Rizwan lifted Pakistan to 316, their bowlers came out and dominated the proceedings with the ball as well. Sri Lanka started off in a steady manner, but Anwar Ali sent Dilshan and Kusal Perera in quick succession to put Pakistan in ascendancy.

This is quite scary for the players. Stones being thrown at a visiting team, it's never good for the game. The security forces are marshalling the crowd.
